My name is Sandra Davis and as your Kootenai
County host I try to post as much data online as possible in order to
make it freely available to all. We gratefully accept contributions of
raw data such as census information, obituaries,
marriage/birth/death records, county histories, biographies, old
newspaper items - anything that would help someone build their family
tree!! Feel free to email me with your
contributions - every little bit helps someone.
Kootenai County was established December 22,
1864 by the Second
Territorial Legislature with Seneaquoteen, a trading post below Lake
Pend Oreille, as the county seat. Rathdrum replaced Seneaquoteen as
county seat in 1881 and Coeur d'Alene replaced Rathdrum in 1908. Named
for the Kutenai Indians who inhabited the area when the white man
arrived. The word "Kootenai" is derived from the Kutenai word meaning
"water people.". Kootenai
County has a rich history, both in Native American and white settlers.
Some of the Native American tribes of the area were the Kutenai and
Coeur d'Alene. The Cataldo Mission and Fort Sherman
are a part of Kootenai County's history. Cataldo Mission is the oldest
standing building in Idaho. The main
industries of the area were once logging and mining.

Obituaries
Obituaries
are one of the most important tools used by researchers in tracing
their family roots. Please consider
contributing any obituary
information that you may have by submitting them here and filling out the transmittal form.
Please include your email address should we have any questions.
Cemetery Headstones
Another wonderful source
of genealogical information for researchers are cemetery headstones.
They
provide key data such as dates of birth, marriage information and dates
of death. To
submit headstone information click here.
We're looking for folks who share our dedication to putting data online
and are interested in helping this project
be successful. If you are
interested in joining our group, view our Volunteer Page for further information and then contact Nancy.
