Mr. George W. TUCKER returned from a two months' tour in the South, Monday night. He went direct to Memphis and from there up White river, and thence across by rail to Little Rock, where he spent several weeks very agreeably. Returning, he came down the Arkansas river direct to St. Louis. Mr. T. is very much prepossessed towards the Rock, and had every inducement offered to locate, which he may yet do. Mrs. P. J. Hostetler, of Bushton, returned on the 15th from Wellington, Kansas, where she had been called by the death of her brother, E.L. Kirkpatrick, who died on the 7th. J.R. Corder,of Mattoon, Ills., who is visiting J. Taylor Day, at this place, has been visiting in Powell county for a week or more, and has, since arriving in this country, secured several rich specimens of silver. He exhibited a piece of "silver bloom" to us a few days since, which he says is as fine as any ever seen in Colorado. He found it between here and Powell county, but just were deponent sayeth not. He leads us to believe from his conversation, however, that if "Swift's mine" is a myth, the fact that silver is abundant here is a certainty. In company with Floyd Day, of this place, Mr. Corder will tomorrow visit Swift's Camp creek and investigate for himself, whether or not the silver indicated at other points can be found there. Mr. George E. Mason, of the Charleston (Ill.) Courier, favored us with a call Wednesday morning. Mr. Mason is an old Californian, having come to this state in 1840, and did his first mining in Cedar Ravine, near this city. After an absence of over forty years, he came back to look at the scenes of his early mining life. He finds a complete change in the appearance of things since then, the Methodist church standing about where he first mined, and neat residences line the banks of the once famous Cedar Ravine. The Mountain Democrat was the only familiar landmark that had survived the ravages of time. Mr. Mason left for Sacramento on Thursday on his return to his eastern home. Frank Bruner Succumbs to Typhoid Pneumonia Last Week
February the twenty-eight, Mr. Frank Bruner died at his home at Custer (KY) after a short illness of typhoid pneumonia. The burial took place in the Bruner family grave yard. Mr. Bruner was a man well-known in the county and a most respected citizen. He leaves a wife and seven children. MYSTERY IN LIFE OF AGED COBBLER
Mattoon, Ill. Aug b.--- C.F. Mann, who had cobbled shoes on Broadway for several years shook the dust of Mattoon of his feet Saturday, going to Milwaukee, Wis., to live with a son.
There is a mystery connected with this man's life. At one time he is said to have been a senator in Wisconsin, and he was grand master of the Wisconsin Odd Fellows. He met reverses of some nature and came away without his family knowing his whereabouts for twenty years. Lately he feared death and wrote to a St. Paul relative to a lot in a cemetery and his son in Milwaukee thus discovered his location. Mr. and Mrs. C L Royer, of Toledo, Ohio were visitors in the city, Friday afternoon enroute to Chicago. "Jack" was driving a new Nash car and had prosperity written all over him. He was the same jolly good fellow and said he still had a warm spot in his heart for Oakland. Ye editor always thought a heap of "Jack" Royer as he was a true blue gentleman, a booster for the old home town and a prince of good fellows.
