Caldwell, D.W. - living two or three miles west of town, died Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock, of winter fever. Jan. 4, 1877
Caldwell, David Washington - only son of Samuel A. and Martha J. Caldwell, aged twenty-five years and four months lacking one day, died at the residence of his father, two and a half miles west of Newton, on Tuesday, the 2d instant, after a brief illness of winter fever. The remains were buried in the Vanderhoof graveyard on Friday. Jan. 11, 1877

Calhoun, Mrs. Margaret age 85 of Newton, died Tuesday, June 5, 1962 at Richland Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were held at the Reese funeral home with Rev. J.E. Spencer of Hidalgo officiating. She was buried in Chapel Cemetery near Falmouth. Mrs. Calhoun was born Feb 5, 1877 to William & Malanda (nee Smith) Thomas. She first married Albert Chapman and following his death, she married Thomas Calhoun, who preceded her in death as did a daughter - Mrs. Nella (Chapman) Kibler in January 1962. Survivors include 2 brothers, Ky Thomas of Newton & Perry Thomas of Olney; 3 sisters: Mrs. Effie Scherer of Olney, Mrs. Ada Brooks and Miss Lillian Thomas, both of Newton; 9 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Calvert, Anna E. - wife of David. Aged 29 yrs, 6 mos, 3 days. Interred in Pleasant Ridge cemetery. A husband and
four small children survive, the oldest being 9 years and the youngest being 5 weeks old. Her sister, wife of Greenlee
Calvert, died last March. June 1, 1892
Calvert, Mrs. Greenlee (February 16, 1881), died at 4 p.m. in Smallwood Township Tuesday

Calvin, Mrs. Thomas - died at the family residence in Flora, Monday, March 8, after a long illness of dropsy and
other ailments. She suffered greatly and death came to her as a relief. Several years ago Mr. and Mrs. Calvin resided
in Newton, where both enjoyed the esteem and friendship a of all who knew them. Deceased was about 50 years of
age, a kind, motherly, Christian woman. She leaves an aged husband and two sons, Allen F., of this city, who is

Campbell, D. W. (Thursday, January 4, 1877), lived 2 or 3 miles west of town; died Tuesday at 9 a.m. of winter fever. [Contributed by Source #4]
Campbell, W.D., a brakeman on the Van road, was run over by a train of cars and killed at Effingham, Saturday evening. He was formerly a conductor on the I. & I.S. and had numerous narrow escapes - once when the locmotive and several cars went through the North Fork bridge, killing the engineer. Candy, Nellie May - little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.B. Candy died Wednesday. The remains were taken to Falmouth. Reported Nov. 18, 1891
Cannon, Moses - Grandpa Cannon was buried at the Aten cemetery a week ago Monday. He was 67 years of age and had been helpless for 20 years, caused from lifting which resulted in spinal trouble. He was a consistent christian and a member of the Christian (Campbellite) church. Rev McCash of Hazel Dell preached the funeral. He leaves an aged wife and a host of relatives and friends to mourn his demise. Canny, David M. - aged 69, died Tuesday, at his home northwest of West Liberty. High blood pressure was given as the cause of his death. Funeral services were held at the Dundas M.E. church, Wednesday, with Rev. W.E. Bennett of Olney in charge. Mr. Canny is survived by his wife, two sons, one daughter and three brothers. Carter, Joseph - a civil war veteran and former resident of Crooked Creek, died Tuesday at Mattoon from Bright's
disease and was buried Wednesday at the Ward cemetery, three miles northwest of town, after funeral services at
the Coad school house, conducted by Rev. Noah Bunton of Toledo. Reported Nov. 8, 1918

Carter, William - was born in Dublin, Ireland on Nov. 26, 1810 and died Jan. 30, 1876. He
came to the United States while quite young. Lived a short time in Virginia, and then in Ohio. He lived in Jasper
county 36 years - having come here when there were but only 17 voters and 40 inhabitants in the county. Newton

Catt, Charles born Jan. 5, 1826. Married Patsey Catt in 1856 and had 5 children with 1 living. Married Nancy McNeely
in 1868 and had 9 children with 6 living. In 1883 joined Christian Church. Died Thursday, Mar. 11, 1897. Buried

Catt, John: Uncle John Catt of Willow HIll township, died very suddenly last evening, after
an illness of but a few hours. He was one of the oldest citizens of Jasper county, his father settling here in

Caudill, Sarah Mrs. - On Wednesday evenging, Oct. 15, 1902, a few moments after nine o'clock
the death angel called the spirit of Mrs. Wm. Caudill to it's eternal home. Mrs. Caudill, whose maiden name was
Miss Sarah Reed, was born Nov. 12, 1842, in Columbiana county, Ohio, and in her infancy moved with her parents
to Jackson Co., of the same state, where she resided until coming to this county in 1885. She was united in holy
bonds of matrimony to Wm. Caudill, June 10, 1869. To this union were born nine children, two of whom are dead and
seven living, viz: Mrs. Ed (Jesse) Libotte, Mrs. Jacob (Henrietta) Evertt, Jennie, Maude, Zona, Homer and Heber.
Short services were conducted at the residence in North Muddy township, by Rev. Reed, after which the remains were
taken to the Wheeler cemetery followed by many sorrowing friends to see her placed in the silent city of the dead.
She lived a devoted christian life ever ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. We extend our heart felt
sympathy to the bereaved family in their sad hour of sorrow. By: A neighbor girl. 1902. [Contributed

Chamblin, George of Lawrenceville, formerly of Newton d. 12 Dec 1944. Death reported 16 Jan 1945.
Chamblin, Sarah E. - d. July 3, 1892 aged 63 years, 6 mos, 2 days. Born in West Alexander, PA on Jan 1, 1829. Married Mr. Chamblin on Oct. 25, 1848. They had six children...one son and two daughters preceeded her in death. Her husband and two sons survive. Interment was in Newton cemetery.

Chaney, Ben - who was quite well known in this county, having lived at Rose Hill and had
charge of James W. Chapman's horses for several years, died in Arkansas of swamp fever. Jan. 20, 1892
Chapman, Mrs. Eva - daughter of Leander and Nancy Swick, was born May 11, 1884,
near Rose Hill, ILL.; and passed away at the family home in Tuscola April 15 at the age of 65 years, 11 months
and four days. She had been in failing health for some time and death followed soon after a stroke. On March 12,
1902, she was united in marriage to Elmer Chapman. To this union were born six children; five sons, Earl of Villa
Grove, Merle of Sidell, Floyd of Rossvillle, Cloyd and Eugene of Tuscola; and one daughter, Mrs. Lorraine (Laura)
Michl of Tuscola; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband and children she is survived by two sisters, Mrs Flossa Powell of Cathin and Mrs. Daisy Ward
of Tuscola, and one brother, Rollie Swick of Indinola, IlL, also a host of other relatives and friends. She was
a faithful companion, devoted and loving mother and a kind, helpful neighbor, and was always ready to help those
in need. She will be greatly missed by all. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in Tuscola, ILL., at 2;30,
conducted by Rev. J.E. Spencer of Hidalgo, Ill, the services were largely attended by people from Newton, Rose
Hill, Hidalgo and Hunt. Burial was in the cemetery near by. [Contributed by Source

Chapman, Ira - died on the 22d inst. of milk sickness. He leaves a sick mother, a heart broken wife and many warm friends to mourn over his untimely taking off. Yale, Nov. 30, 1877
Chapman, James Sr. - aged 80, died at his home in Crooked Creek township Sunday. Deceased was an honored citizen and his death takes away one of the pioneers. He leaves several children, all grown and many friends to mourn his death. Jan. 6, 1892

Chapman, William W. - born in Edgar Co., IL Sept. 24, 1840 and d. Oct. 30, 1919. Married Hannah M. Roberts April 21, 1861, the ceremony being performed by her father, Franklin Roberts, J.P. at his residence. Twelve children were born, six surviving: Quincy, Stella, Victor, Mary, Essie, Silas. Ida, Alice, Anna, William, Emily and an infant passed away. Mr. Chapman was a son of Robert and Ruth (Hurst) Chapman and came to Grandville township with his parents from Bloomfield, Ill., in 1848....Buried at Hazel Dell, Ill, by the side of his wife who died in March, 1917. The ceremony was conducted by Rev. McCash of Hazel Dell, a comrade and old friend of his. He served over 3 years in Company E, 97th Ill. Infantry. Surviving besides the six children are seventeen grandchildren; William Ault, Pearl Hammer, Cora Glidewell, Stella Carter, Bertha Mills, Ruth Mills, Harry Mills, Roy Chapman, Doyt Barkley, Durward Barkley, Kenneth Barkley, Donald Barkley, Harner Barkley, Freda Barkley and Clell Chapman; three brothers, Robert Hiram Chapman, Ed Chapman of Washington and Dr. Joseph Chapman of Wheeler; two sisters, Emily Collins of Yale and Jane Chesnut of Bogota. Charlot, Mrs. Hannah - died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. H.D. Yelvington, Sunday afternoon. Deceased was getting well along in years...She leaves an aged husband, Mr. C. G. Charlot, a son and 2 daughters, and other relatives. The remains were buried at the cemetery three miles northwest of town. Rev. J.W. reed conducted the funeral services. Reported Sep 17, 1890

Chrissman, Mrs. Hulda - died at her residence in this place, at about 4 o'clock a.m. on
Monday last, after a lingering illness of several weeks duration. Mrs. C. was universally loved and respected by
all who knew her. She leaves one ?n and three brothers to mourn her death. Her remains were deposited in the Newton

Chronic, Mrs. Elizabeth J. (Wednesday, January 27, 1897), widow of Emanuel, died
at Mr. and Mrs. Alexander McCann's home northwest of Wheeler on Jan. 22, 1897. Aged 67 years and 11 months. Joined
the M. E. church when about 14 or 15 years old. Had 11 children with Mrs. Barthua Peryman of Pensville, Arkansas;
David B. of Dietrich; and Mrs. Alexander McCann and George Chronic of near Wheeler survived her. Buried in a cemetery

Clagg, Mrs. R.B. - departed this life Tuesday, November 22. She leaves a husband, three children and many friends

Clark, Mrs. Anna Mary a daughter of W. B. and Anna E. Jones, was born at Chester, December 7, 1870, and departed
this life, October 28, 1933 at the family home northeast of Lis. She was united in marriage to Allen F. Clark,
February 23, 1892. To this union were born three children, Mrs. N. E. Clella Stevens of Decatur, Loren M. Clark
of Oakland, and Mrs. Emery (Annie) Strole, who preceded her in death, March 12, 1918. She united with the M. P.
church when about 20 years of age and later transferred her membership to the U. B. church, remaining a member
until the church was disbanded. Last winter, with her husband, she united with the First Christian church at Fairview
and remained a faithful member until called home. She had been in poor health for a number of months but bore her
suffering without complaint. She leaves to mourn her departure a faithful husband; two children; one grand-daughter
and four grand-sons; two brothers and one sister, H. R. Jones, C. W. Jones and Mrs. F. S. Parker of Lis vicinity;
besides many other relatives and friends. She was a faithful wife, a kind mother and a good neighbor, and will
be greatly missed. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Fairview Christian church, conducted by Rev.
J. E. Spencer. Burial was in Slate Point cemetery. The Newton Press, November 3, 1933 [Contributed

Clark, Grandison - died at his home in North Muddy, Saturday morning, of dropsical affection with which he had
been ailing for a couple of years. Monday he was feeling better than usual and spent the day in town. Mr. Clark
was twice married and leaves 5 children by his first wife and 3 by his second. He served through the war with Mexico
with credit, settled in Jasper county at an early date, engaged in farming and stockdealing, and acquired considerable
wealth. In 1882, Mr. Clark was elected a member of the Illinois legislature, serving a single term in the lower
house.... His remains were interred at the Fairview cemetery, Sunday. Newton Press, April 30, 1890

Clark, Susanna Ellen - daughter of Samuel and Margaret Allison, was born in Gila county, Ohio, on Feb. 22, 1845
and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ira Ball in this city, Saturday, January 22, 1927, aged 81 years
and 11 months. She was united in marriage to Dr. Noah S. Clark, Sept. 21, 1865, and to them were born eleven children,
viz: Albert G. Clark of Alva, Okla; Mrs. Maggie J. Williams of Clay City; Ellsworth N. Clark of Salem; Oscar E.
Clark of Odell; Mrs. Flora Ball of Newton; Mrs. Lucy McKinney of Bogota; Mrs. Belle Clark of Newton. There are
also twenty-seven grandchildren. Her husband and four children preceded her in death. Deceased had lived in Kedron
vicinity and at Newton for over 54 years...Funeral services were held at Sandy Creek Christian church, Monday morning,
January 24 at 11 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J.E. Spencer of Newton, and interment was in the nearby cemetery....

Clark, Sophia (Wednesday, July 21, 1897), daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Hobson. Born on July 4, 1840 in Clay county, Illinois. Married first to John Gregory. John was a Civil War veteran and constable. Had children Mrs. Isaac Poe, Mrs. Tom McCall, Will, and Arthur. Married second to Van Clark and had a step-son named Frank. Died on Thursday, July 15, 1897 at her family home west of Newton. Buried in Newton cemetery. [Contributed by Source #4]

Clark, William - son of Hon. Grandison Clark, passed away on the 13th at the family residence
of typhoid malarial fever. He was interred in the Point cemetery. Slate Point, February 22, 1888
Clark, WILLIAM M. - Funeral services for William M. Clark of Carlyle, a former resident
of Jasper county, were held at the Rose Hill, Methodist church, Friday afternoon, and burial was in the Songer
cemetery. The Rev. J.E. Spencer of Hidalgo officiated. He died last Wednesday at his home near Carlyle. He was
born in Edgar county, December 20, 1860, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Clark. He was united in marriage to Miss
Sarah Swick fifty six years ago and they made their home near Newton until five years ago, when they moved to Clinton
county. He leaves a wife; four daughters and two sons, Mrs. Jack( May) Seely of Carlyle, Mrs. Owen (Flavia) Bridges
of Decatur, Mrs. Ralph (Lillie) Buskin of Galesburg, Mrs. Owen (Alma) Morley and Oscar Clark of Arcola, and Thomas
Clark of Newton vicinity. Two children preceded him in death, Belle in infancy, and James in an accident near Carlyle
two years ago. He is also survived by thirty two grand-children, four of whom are in the armed services, three

Clarke, H.C.J. - of Grayville, died last week. Deceased was the father of Mrs. John F. Ransom and a brother of J.O.E. Clarke, editor of the Mentor.
Clarke, Mary S. - No event ever happened in Grayville which has caused more universal sorrow
than the death of Mary S., wife of J.E.O. Clarke, which occured at the family residence at 8:20 o'clock yesterday
morning. .... She was a daughter of Mrs. Fanny Price of Evansville, and was married to J.E.O. Clarke in Evansville,
Feb. 18th, 1875, the result of their union being four bright children: Mabel, aged ten, Helen, aged eight, Ernest,
aged six and Fannie, aged four. Member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Grayville. Mrs. Fannie Price, mother,
Mrs. Emma Overlin, sister, J.C. Price, brother and Price Overline, nephew of the deceased, came over from Evansville
yesterday. Mrs. Jno. W. Christian sister, of Chilesburg, KY, reached here this morning, and Dr. W.G. and Edwin
B. Price, brothers, of Kansas City, Mo., will arrive tonight, in time for the funeral, which will take place from

Cline, Hannah J. - Mrs. Cline Suicides.....Hannah J. widow of the late Geo. W. Cline, sr.,
suicided at 10 a.m. today by swallowing carbolic acid. When discovered she was sitting in a chair, at the Cottage
Hotel, her home, at West Jourdan Street, this city, and had been dead from 5 to 10 minutes. She had threatened
to take poison or to shoot herself early in the morning. Deceased was born May 14, 1837, and leaves surviving six
children, George, Ed, Thomas, Mrs. Harvey (Rosa) Hayden, Mrs. Jacob (Lizzie) Hankins, and Miss Meta, besides numerous

Coburn, Lyle Kenneth - was born February 15, 1914. He departed this life January
17, 1917, age 1 year, 11 months and 2 days. He was the third and only son of Clarence W. and Ethel Coburn of Hidalgo.
He leaves to mourn a father, mother two sisters, Mildred Agatha, Chlora Bernedine, two grandfathers, two grandmothers,

Code, Mrs. Mary - died at her residence near Rose Hill, Sunday, aged 68 years and 13 days. She was sick but a short
time, suffering from a severe attack of the flux. Two sons and four daughters, all grown, survive her. August 17,
1892

Coleman, John T. - veteran of the Civil War...died at Willow Hill Sunday. He had been in serious ill-health for several months. He was born in Rush county, Indiana, Jan. 21, 1842; moved to Lawrence county, IL, about 1854; enlisted in and served as a Union soldier with the 91st IL regiment in the Civil war for three years; was married to Mary E. Cotton in 1871 and departed this life Dec. 21, 1919 of pneumonia, aged 77 years and 11 months. Mrs. Coleman preceded him in death many years. Deceased was the father of eight children, five of them, four sons and one daughter surviving him, viz: J.S. Coleman, Cortez, Colorado; Marion Coleman, Montborne, Washington; Emmet Coleman, Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada; George Coleman, Little Rock, Arkansas; and Mrs. H.L. (Bertha) Elston, Meeker, Colorado. Two weeks ago while at Olney, he suffered a stroke of paralysis and never recovered from the shock. His remains were taken to Casey & buried beside those of his wife who died two or three years ago. Cook, Mrs. Alice Rockwell was born in Clark County, June 1, 1861, and departed this life June 24, 1936, aged 75
years and 23 days. She was married to Robert Kirby June 8, 1879. To this union were born ten children, five of
whom receded her in death, Maude Mulvina, Edward, Homer Forest, Mary Elsie, and Robert Everett. Her husband died
March 28, 1899. On December 23, 1913, she was married to Gilbert Cook, who departed this life February 6, 1933.
She leaves two sons, Charles Maynard Kirby of Bisbee, Arizona, and Arthur Stephen Kirby of Yale; three daughters,
Mrs. Anna Drinkwater of Yale, Mrs. Josie Jeffers of Hunt City, and Mrs. Lewis Burkett of Kinmundy; five sisters,

Cooley, Harry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Cooley, was born November 25, 1892 and died in Victor, (Montana) Sunday,
Feb. 14, 1897, aged 4 years, 2 months, and 19 days. Cause pneumonia. Harry was a bright boy, admired by all who
knew him, and his death was a heavy blow to his parents. Rev. D. B. Price was engaged to conduct the funeral services,
but because the Drs. thought Helen Hickey, who lives with them and is now quite sick, may have diphtheria, advised
that no service be held. The little form was quietly laid to rest at 2 p.m. in the Victor cemetery. Stevensville,
Montana, Tribune. Mrs. Cooley was formerly Miss Mary Clark, a daughter of the late Grandison Clark, of North Muddy

be in Wheeler cemetery, Wheeler. Mrs. Cooley was born May 3, 1893 in Jasper county, a daughter of Charles and Emily
(Eagleton) Linthicum. She married Leonard Cooley and he preceded her in death in 1942. Surviving are several nieces

death, which has made so many sad and desolate homes within the past six months, has again torn from the embrace
of another home a near and dear love done. But what a blessed, comforting and consoling thought to know that he
today is at rest. At about 10:30 a. m. Friday, the death messenger called upon Wm. T. Cowger to leave this world
and go to that country from whence no traveler has ever yet returned.
Father Cowger was born in Rush Co., Ind., April 28, 1837; came to this state in 1853; and since that time has formed
the acquaintance of many people. No doubt but that Bro. Cowger accepted the words of our blessed Savior in that
noted memorial sermon on the Mount when he said,
"Seek ye first the kingdom of heaven and His righteousness and all things necessary to life will be added",
for while but a mere boy he embraced the religion of our Lord and Savior, and throughout his life he endeavored
to live a consistent christian life. His patient, long suffering Christ-like spirit in his last hours show beyond
doubt that his endeavor to be a christian had not been in vain. He has left the happy assurance of a blessed immortality.
Those who knew him found him to be a good and obliging neighbor, a compassionate husband, and a kind and affectionate
father. In his dying hours he leaned upon the strong arm of the Redeemer to sustain him; he leaves a wife, three

of John Carter, twelve miles southwest of Newton,
of lung fever, after an illness of eight days, Mr. George Craig,

Craig, Louisa Died on December 22, 1878; only ill for three days. Aged 58 years, 7 months and 6 days. Born on May
5, 1820 in Hardin county, Kentucky. Married December 17, 1835 to t. S. Needham. In 1836, "professed religion"
at Pleasant Grove camp meeting, and joined M. E. church. In 1847 came to Jasper county. Four sons and three daughters

Craig, Mrs M.E. - departed this life at Durango, Col., Aug. 15 [1890], aged 49 years, 5 mos and 2 days. Her remains
were taken to Farmington, N.M. for interment. She leaves a husband and one son. Mrs. Craig, known to all of the
older citizens of Jasper county as Miss Nellie Bursell, had a host of warm friends here. Many of those who are
now actively engaged in business attended school when she was instructor in the old frame southwest of the square
where she taught several terms. She was a lady of strong intellect, genial, sunny disposition and will be kindly
remembered by all of her surviving pupils. Mrs. Craig was a sister of Mrs. John C. Brooks of Newton. Aug. 27, 1890
Crail, H.W. (Wilse) - died recently at Terre Haute. Deceased was best known as Wilse, was twice married, his first
wife being a Mrs. Sallie Hammack. By her three children were born, all living, Samuel, of Chicago; Mrs. Gussie
Loockwood, of Terre Haute; and Mrs. John McClendon, of Hot Springs, Ar.; His second marriage was to Mrs. Elizabeth
Slats, who survives him. Wilse was a brother of William Crail, Mrs. Mary Maxwell and Mrs. S.A. King, of Newton,
Mrs. Will Wright, of Hutchinson, Kas., and Mrs. J.W.McCartney, Springfield, MO; He was a genial gentleman, well

Crail, Mrs. James died rather suddenly Tuesday evening about 11 o'clock, at the family home, after a two day's
illness. Death was due to auto-intoxication, a kind of poisoning. Deceased was 47 years old. She leaves to mourn
her demise besides her husband, 7 children viz: Mary, Ida, Alice, Lucinda, Dorothy, Florence, all at home, and
Harry of near Robinson. Funeral services were held at the residence yesterday afternoon at 1 o'clock and the remains

Cramer, Gilbert Hayes - son of Reuben and Jane (Jared) Cramer, was born Dec. 23, 1870, and departed this life at
St Anthony’s Hospital, Terre Haute, IN, May 20, 1949, at the age of 78 years, five months and 27 days. He was united
in marriage to Wynona Poulter on April 13, 1890. To this union four children were born, Floyd Cramer, Yale; Mrs
Mabel Potter, Mrs Iris Tumelson, Terre Haute and little Madge who preceded him on death at the age of four years.
Early in life he yielded to the call of the Master and united with the Presbyterian faith at Bethel. Later, he
and Mrs Cramer united with the Yale Methodist church, where with an ever faithful trust in God he served willingly
and continuously for his creator. For more than 20 years he served as superintendent and teacher in the Sunday
School. To him , these were not enough. For a number of years including the past few he served conscientiously
as church custodian. Most of his life was spent in and around Yale where he worked in the woods, felling trees
and logging, thereby adding his contribution towards making mankind more conscious of God’s handiwork. Besides

Creed, Reynolds:Newton Painter Reynolds Creed died suddenly Sunday 9:15 a.m. while visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Woodall Hays. Creed was a World War veteran and had returned from the Danville Veterans Hospital after several months of treatment there. An inquest was conducted on Sunday by Deputy Coroner Alonzo E. Martin. Hays and Patrick Roy Garrett, a roomer at Mr. Hays' house, testified that Creed came to the house carrying a bottle of rubbing alcohol in a sack which he went into the kitchen to drink. He then later went out for about 10 minutes, returning with a second pint of rubbing alcohol - of which he proceeded to drink a full glass. Hays invited him to sit and have a cup of coffee which he did. Creed then got up and walked to the door, opened it and closed it, then sat down in a chair beside the door. Though he was leaning forward in the chair, Hays and Garrett thought he was sleeping. After 15 minutes, they realized he was no longer breathing. A jury consisting of John F. Kaufmann, William Cantwell, Floyd Portlock, William Spencer, R.L. Worceater and D.L. Young decided he had died from acute alcoholism. Creed was born at Newton on June 29, 1889, son of Jerome and Mary Creed. He enlisted in Company B, 4th Infantry, Illinois National Guard for service on the Mexican border, and re-enlisted in May 1917 in Company B, 130th infantry during W.W.I, seeing service with the 33rd Division in France during the St. Mihiel & Meuse-Argonne offensives. He leaves his wife, Sylvia; 2 children: Paul and Patsy Creed; one brother: Colby Creed of Sadorus; one sister: Mrs. Adeline McClure of Chicago; and three half sisters: Mrs. Josephine Jourdan and Mrs. Mary Jourdan of Newton and Mrs. Geneva Bail of Olney. The five surviving children are: Mrs. Maggie Cathcart of Mattoon, Mrs. Ethel Woods of Bogota, Mrs. Emma Thompson of Tolono, William Crouse of Bogota, Adam Crouse at home; also 25 grandchildren, 2 great-granchildren and a host of other relatives....A granddaughter, Miss mattie Mitchell, a daughter of Lewis Mithcell, died a few days before and the remains were sent to Iowa for interment. Crowley, Cornelius - a resident of St. Marie, Jasper County, IL, aged 44 years and four
months, departed this life February 26, 1874, after an illness of four days. His disease was that of cerebro spinal
meningitis, commonly called spotted fever. He leaves a wife and seven children to mourn his death, but we hope
their loss is his eternal gain, for we must all die sooner or later to give an account of our stewardship here
below. "Therefore, be ye also ready, for in such an hour as know ye not the son of man cometh." Mr. Crowley
was an affectionate husband, a loving father and a good and obliging citizen. He was a man in the township in which
he resided that was unequaled by none for truth, morality and good moral character. He will be missed by the community

In 1863, she was united in marriage to John Cummins, who preceded her in death July 30, 1923. To them were born four children, one son, Charles, dying at the age of 18. Surviving are Homer Cummins of Olney, Mrs. George (Rosetta) McKimmy of Shobonier, and Mrs. John (Martha) Harrison of Rose Hill, ten grandchildren, brother John Mitchell of Rose Hill and other relatives....Impressive funeral services were held, Friday morning at 10 a.m. at the Cummins U.B. church, conducted by Rev. Cunningham, Mary - wife of John, died at her home in this place at 10 o'clock p.m. Sunday last, after an illness
of one week's duration, of typhoid pneumonia, aged about 35 (? or 85) years. The remains were buried in the Catholic
graveyard at this place on Tuesday afternoon following. The remains of her infant child were removed from the St.
Peter graveyard and also deposited in the same grave. Oct. 19, 1876
Curdot, Mrs. Lucy - the beloved wife of our respected friend, Jos. Curdot, departed this
life at her home in this place, on Wednesday, February 25, 1874 at 10 o'clock, p.m. aged 30 years. Mrs. Curdot
was a loving and faithful wife, a patient and gentle mother and a generous and obliging neighbor, and she will
be sadly missed by a large circle of friends. She leaves a kind obedient husband and seven children - one an infant
3 weeks old - to mourn her early death. The bereaved family has the sympathies of a sorrowing community. [The Newton Press, Mar 6, 1874]

Curtiss, Mrs. Elizabeth - relict of the late Eli W. Curtiss d. at her home on west Jourdan St yesterday at 11;30 a.m. Survived by her stepson, Oscar Curtiss, who lives somewhere up north and her nieces Miss Mary Glenn and Mrs. T.F. Faller. Mr. Curtiss died in 1888. She was interred in the Catholic cemetery. Jan. 21, 1891
Curtiss, P.H. - an old and respected citizen of Crooked Creek, died at his residence, Friday and was interred Sunday. He was the father of Mrs. Mattie Hoggins. July 31, 1889
