Whig Oct 3, 1893 Page 2 DEATH OF AN OLD RESIDENT Mrs. Susan E. Shannahan, one of the
oldest residents of this city, died at her room at the Gem City
hotel at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the advanced old age of 81
years. On Wednesday last she suffered a stroke of paralysis and
gradually failed until she closed her eyes in eternal sleep. Mrs.
Shannahan was born on the island of Jamaica and came to Quincy
nearly sixty years ago. She was the widow of the late William
Shannahan. During her long residence in Quincy she had gained a wide
circle of acquaintances and by the older residents particularly her
friendship was most highly prized. A noble Christian woman, of broad
and far-reaching charity, her life has been filled with good deeds
and kindly services and her death will be deeply deplored. The
funeral services will be held at St. John's cathedral this afternoon
at 4:30 o'clock. The Quincy Morning
Whig Oct 4, 1893 Page 8 FUNERAL OF MRS. SHANNAHAN The funeral of the late Mrs. Susan
Shannahan was largely attended at the Cathedral of St. John's
yesterday afternoon. Her long residence here had given her a very
wide acquaintance and the old families of the city were well
represented. In the absence of Dean Moore the services were
conducted by the Rev. Mr. Mayo, the large choir of men and boys
rendering appropriate music. During the services the choir sang
Roney's requiem, “Beyond the Smiling and the Weeping.” There were handsome floral tributes on
the casket and there seemed to be an earnest effort to do honor to
the memory of the lovely old lady whose life had abounded with the
beautiful deeds and had won constant admiration and such as will
insure an abiding remembrance in the hearts of the appreciative
people who have been familiar with her kindly manners and bright
example.
