1937 FLOOD

CAIRO SAND BOIL

Alexander County Illinois Genealogy Trails

Contributed by Andrea White

During the 1937 flood, Margaret White was a Red Cross nurse.  She took many pictures to record her experience with the towns and refuge camps that were used for displaced people throughout Southern Illinois.  This is a scene in Cairo where they are working on a Sand Boil.  Notice the building to the left says, "Cairo Ice and Coal Co."
