Contributed by Sue Mullins The services over the remains of C. D. Arter, deceased, at the residence, were conducted by the Rev B. Y. George, the house being inadequate to the accommodation of the large number present. The body was buried according to the beautiful and impressive forms of the A. F A. Masonic Fraternity. (Note: For more on this death, see news.) DEATH NOTICE OF WILLIAM H. BANKSTON FORMER CAIROITE DIES--William H. Bankston, age 44 years, formerly a business man of this city, died at Anna this morning. He is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Nell Williams of Thebes, Mrs. Elizabeth Thomson of Metropolis, one niece and seven nephews. Mr. Bankston operated a ready-to-wear store on Eighth street here a number of years ago, later moving to St. Louis where he operated a shop. DEATH NOTICE OF WILLIAM H. BANKSTON FORMER CAIROITE DIES--William H. Bankston, age 44 years, formerly a business man of this city, died at Anna this morning. DEATH NOTICE OF AVIS M. BEASLEY Avis M. Miller Beasley was born at home near Elco, Alexander County, Illinois on June 26, 1902, the daughter of Milford "Major" Green Miller and Willie Anne Parrott Miller. She married Harry Lee Beasley in Alexander County, Illinois on August 27, 1918. She died on October 19, 1926 in childbirth at her home near Elco. The infant also died and was interred at the breast of its mother. Both are buried in the Delta Cemetery. --Contributed by Frank Beasley. Harry Lee "Taller Hill" Beasley was born at home near Elco, Alexander County, Illinois on June 1, 1897, son of William "Will" Beasley and Dora "Dorrie" Jane Thompson Beasley. He first married Avis M. Miller in Alexander County on August 27, 1918. She died during childbirth on October 19, 1926. He then married Mattie Belle Cantrell of McClure on February 4, 1929 at the Clinton County Courthouse in Carlyle, Illinois. He died on April 5, 1942 at St. Mary's Hospital, Centralia, Marion County, Illinois, as a result of an automobile accident on Illinois Route 161 about six miles east of Centralia. His daughter, Mary Louise, also died as a result of this accident. His home at the time of death was 717 North Elm Street, Centralia. Interment was in the Delta Cemetery, Alexander County, IL. --Contributed by Frank Beasley. Mary Louise Beasley, daughter of Harry Lee and Mattie Belle Cantrell Beasley, died April 5, 1941 at the scene of an automobile accident on Illinois Route 161 about six miles east of Centralia, Marion County, Illinois. She was born at home on Rasback Street in Centralia on December 28, 1930. Her father, Harry Lee, also died as a result of the accident. She was buried in Delta Cemetery, Alexander County, Illinois. Contributed by Terri Colglazier Special Telegram to The Inter Ocean Cairo, Ill., June. 5. -- At about 3 o'clock this afternoon a section foreman named John Burr in the Illinois Central Railroad yards in this city was instantly killed by the tender of a locomotive which was backing along the track and it is supposed he stumbled and fell and was pushed along by the rods of the brake. No blame is attached to the engineer. The verdict of the Coroner's jury was in accordance with the facts. The man leaves a family. [1877-06-06 - Inter Ocean]Death of a Section Boss. Cairo, Ill., June 5. -- John Burr, section foreman in the yards of the Illinois Central R. R. at Cairo, was run over and killed by the cars this afternoon, his head being nearly severed from his body. He leaves a large family. [Indianapolis Sentinel - 1877-06-06] DEATH NOTICE OF MRS. SARAH S. CAMPBELL On Friday, the 11th instant, Mrs. Sarah S. Campbell, wife of Robert B. Campbell, of this city. DEATH NOTICE OF VENARD CHAMBERS South Bend, Ind.--VENARD CHAMBERS
of South Bend passed away last Wednesday after a two year illness.
He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Obry Chambers and was born 78
years ago in Cairo, Illinois. Venard attended the Young Grade
School in Sandusky and graduated from Sumner High School in Cairo.
He was well-known in the area having grown up in Southern
Illinois. Mr. Chambers was instrumental in getting the memorial
erected near Horseshoe Lake in tribute to his great-great-grandfather,
Nathan London, who was a Civil War hero and lived to be 106 years old.
The memorial marks the spot where Mr. London established the
first black school in Alexander County. (Contributed by Hayward

DEATH NOTICE OF BEN W. CLAFLIN HOUSTON--Ben. W. Claflin, formerly of Cairo, died at 4 a.m. today in Houston. He was associated for 30 years with the Illinois Mineral Co., Cairo and after retirement in 1965 he and his wife moved to 400 Clarewood Drive, Apt. 1116, Houston, Tex. Survivors are his widow, Olive; one son, Donald; and three grandchildren. Goldstine, former Cairoite, and at one time the leading dry goods merchant in this section, passed away at his home in New York Thursday noon. DEATH NOTICE OF MAJOR JESSE HINKLE DEATH CLAIMS MAJOR HINKLE From the Cairo Weekly Citizen, Thursday, February 9, 1893 James Hopson, one of the colored mail carriers, died at his home on Walnut street early this morning. He went home sick on Wednesday evening of last week, and pneumonia took hold of him and carried him off. The deceased was 38 years old and leaves a wife and several children. He was commissioned as mail carrier in November, 1889, and since then has proved to be one of the most faithful and efficient mail carriers on the force. He mastered the work of distributing the mail, which is one of the most difficult tasks connected with the post office. He was prominent in lodge circles, and the colored secret organizations will probably conduct the funeral, which may be held Sunday. The deceased was held in high regard by everyone who knew him. B. ISLER G. B. Isler passed away at his home in Thebes this morning following a heart attack. Surviving him is his wife, the former Mrs. Fanny Schumacher. Three daughters, Mrs. Maude Youart and Mrs. Maisie Creech of Thebes and Mrs. Lawrence McNutt of Verna, Mo.; one brother, C. A. Isler of Thebes and one sister, Miss Blanche Isler of Thebes, and several grandchildren also survive him. Mr. Isler, a retired railroad man, was well known in this county. Funeral arrangements have not yet been completed. J. T. recently. He was the oldest member of the I.O.O.F., being initiated at
Philadelphia over 50 years ago. From the Cairo Weekly Citizen, February 9, 1893 Mortuary: Little Otto Lohr, the three year old son of Mr. Andrew Lohr, died early yesterday morning of diphtheria. Little Otto was his parents only boy, and was the pride of his father. He was a sweet lovable child. This bereavement will fall heavily upon the household where afflictions have been such frequent visitors and the sympathy of the community will be theirs. SARAH MCNULTY, whose death was announced in the Argus yesterday, came
to Cairo from Caledonia, now Olmstead, Pulaski county, where she was
raised. Her maiden name was Bagby. She located in this city when quite
a young woman, in 1857 or '58. She married about three years later. Her
daughter is Mrs. Lee Harrison. Her sons are Oliver, John, Charles and
William McNulty. She had had several grandchildren, six of whom are the
children of John McNulty, Jr. (Note: Sarah McNulty died 23

He was a native of Ray County, Mo., aged 55 years, a brother of Mrs. Joseph Gossage, now residing in East Richmond, Mo. He left Ray County about 35 years ago, and for the past 20 years had been employed as an engineer on the Cotton Belt Railroad. He is survived by wife and several children. County, died at his home at Thebes at 8:30 o'clock last night, at the
age of 70 years. His widow was formerly Miss Scena Felter of
Cairo. DEATH NOTICE OF JOHN A. SAMMONS, JR. DIED FROM DIPHTHERIA John A. Sammons, Jr., infant son of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Sammons, died at 10:20 o'clock this morning of diphtheria. The little fellow was only taken sick Monday, and it is not known how he contracted the disease. He was four years old last July. the funeral of Claude Shaunnessy, who died at Fort Staunton, N. Mex.
was held at St. Patrick's Catholic church conducted by Rev. J. J.
Downey, the pastor. Interment was made in Calvary cemetery at
Villa Ridge. The K. M. K. C. Order of Eagles and Bartenders' Union
members attended in a body and the pall bearers were selected from
these lodges. They were: Joseph Raeth, August Bode, Henry Levy,

Captain Thomas W Shields, age 65, a prominent citizen of Cairo, died
this forenoon of heart disease. Captain Shields was a Virginian
by birth and served in the Confederate army during the war and since
then has followed the river. He was known all up and down the
Mississippi Valley, as he has owned several steamboats and was for
years connected with the A_______ Line. DEATH NOTICE OF LESLIE L. SKILES St.
Peters, MO--Leslie L. Skiles, 72; Founded Ad Firm-- A graveside service
for Leslie L. Skiles, a retired businessman, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday
at Lindsay Cemetery in McClure, Ill.
Mr. Skiles, 72, died Friday at Barnes Hospital in St. Peters after a heart attack. He had lived in Hazelwood for 32 years before moving to St. Peters in March. In 1966, Mr. Skiles founded Skiles Advertising Signs Inc., an outdoor advertising company in Berkeley. He was chairman of the board of the company until he retired in 1981. He played bagpipes for the John Ford Highland Pipe Band and for the Pipes and Drums Band of the Moolah Shriners. Surviving are a son, Richard Skiles of St. Peters; two daughters, Judy McCarty of St. Peters and Cindy Skiles of Florissant; two sisters, Velma Riston of Granite City and Freda Vredenburgh of Arnold; and six grandchildren. --St. Louis Post-Dispatch (MO) - May 21, 1989 DEATH NOTICE OF JOHN W. STUART LAST SAD RITES FOR JOHN W. STUART--Funeral Services at St. Joseph's Church Very Impressive--Bright sunshine and a cloudless sky looked down upon the funeral cortege of John Stuart this afternoon as if to breathe a benediction upon the good man who has passed to the Great Beyond, and at St. Joseph's church, where masses were said for the peace of the departed soul, there was a large congregation of friends who were there to testify by their silent presence the warmth of their admiration for a good Christian gone to rest. All hearts were filled with the sadness of final parting and the services were most impressive. The Catholic Knights of America attended in a body. The pall bearers were M. C. Wright, E. A. Smith, Claude Winter, Charles Wenger, Hal Aisthorpe, James Galligan, M. J. Sheehan, John A. Haynes, H. Bloms and Phil C. Barclay. After the services at the church the procession marched to the Illinois Central station and the remains were taken this afternoon to Rockford, Ill., accompanied by Miss Annie Stuart and Mrs. Elizabeth M. Styles, sisters of the decedent and James LaHue, his brother-in-law. TABER At Cairo , Illinois , April 12,
at the residence of J. C. Taber, Samuel H. Taber of the firm of Taber
Bros. & Son of C. P. Taber, late of Hennepin , Illinois , after a
lingering illness of 10 months which he bore with extraordinary
fortitude and resignation - aged 23 years. DEATH NOTICE OF ALICE WASHINGTON Mrs. Alice
Washington died at the age of 80 on Dec 6, 1932 Road District Number 7,
Alexander County and was buried Dec 11 in the A. C. B. A. Cemetery in
Hodges Park. She was the wife of Mose Washington and had been
born in Mississippi. DEATH NOTICE OF CAPT. THOMAS WILSON Our new
Postmaster, Capt. Thos. Wilson died at Eureka Springs last Friday
morning. The remains were brought on to Cairo where funeral
services were held last Sunday at the residence of the deceased and
were then interred at Beech Grove Cemetery. Capt. Wilson had been
failing for several months. He was a native of England, but had
lived in the country since 1835, and in city of Cairo since 1854.
He took charge of the Cairo Post Office on the first day of September,
but has been failing constantly and Mr. Geo. F. Ort has been the
responsible man in charge of the office. --Source: From The

Henry Winter died in Cairo last week, aged 67 years. He lived in Cairo, Alexander County since 1856. --Jonesboro Gazette, 27 May 1893. Funeral services were held this afternoon over the remains of Mrs. Clara Woods, wife of William H. Woods at the family residence, No. 214 Fifteenth street.
