ELCO -- GARNITA ROSE GASKILL (Beasley-Miller), 88, was welcomed home with grace into the warm loving arms of her Savior Jesus Christ Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011.
Born on July 11, 1923, in Elco, this tiny, yet bold and independent
woman, was the only child of Avis and Lee Beasley. After the passing of
her mother, Garnita was adopted by her grandparents, Willie (Parrott)
and Milford Miller. While she was Avis and Lee's only child, she was
later reunited with half-siblings, Frank, Jim and Kathy.
Garnita was pleased and blessed to have many loving brothers and
sisters by her marriage to Morton Lee Gaskill on Dec. 25, 1940. Morton
and Garnita were blessed with four loving children, Marcia, Carole, Roy
and Gene.
Garnita was proud to be a hard worker. While tending to the family and
farm household, and helping Morton with farming, Garnita worked at Miss
Elaine's Garment Factory in O'Fallon. She then later worked her way up
in U.S. Civil Service from a punch card operator to retirement as a
computer programmer at Scott Air Force Base. Her family is very proud
of her for her accomplishments.
While she enjoyed her independence, she thoroughly enjoyed the love
from her family and extended family. She enjoyed playing Chicken Foot
Dominoes and Skip-Bo with them, tending to her roses, driving her
candy-red apple Alero, looking at her always-growing rooster
décor collection and sweets, especially chocolate.
She was an active member of First Baptist Church of O'Fallon since 1958
and a soprano in the choir, a board member of Metro East Baptist
Association, a Red Hat Society lady, a member of St. Clair County Farm
Bureau and a member of Senior Circle at GMRC.
Most of all she enjoyed her daily walk with Jesus. Garnita's entry into
Heaven fulfilled her desire to be with her Savior. Her family and
friends are greatly saddened by the loss of the family matriarch, but
are grateful for the journey of love and values Garnita has led them on
and of the many loving memories she has left imprinted in their hearts.
Garnita's faith brought her through the passing of her beloved husband
of more than 57 years; her youngest son, Gene; his son, Eric; her
son-in-law, Wally Templeton; numerous sisters and brothers-in law; and
aunts, uncles and cousins. She had recently mourned the loss of many of
her beloved friends and fellow Christians.
She was known as Mom, Mother, Grandmother, Great-grandmother, GGG, Miss
Gaskill and Miss Garnita. The proud generations remaining are
daughters, Marcia (and son-in-law, Bill) McGarvey and Carole Templeton;
and son, Roy "Butch" (and daughter-in-law Betsy); and daughter-in-law
Linda Tamayo. Grandchildren are Melodee DeVuyst, Greg (and Tami)
Schmidt, Vicki Evans, Geri McNamer, Glenn (and Angel) McNamer, Gail
Gorton, Kim (and Paul Jr.) Jackson and Scott Gaskill.
Great-grandchildren are Sarah (and Richard) Morris, Jeffrey DeVuyst,
Jesse, Ali and Olivia Schmidt, Samantha Barnes, Nathan and Ryan
McNamer, Alicia Bach, Zachary, Sam and Lydia Gorton and Skylar McNamer.
Great-great-grandchildren are Rachael and Richie Morris and Alison,
Cara and Baily Jackson; and many nieces and nephews. Her surviving
brothers and sisters are Frank (and Kathryn) Beasley, Jim (and Joyce)
Beasley, Kathy (and Neil) Beal, Patsy Britt, Ruby (and Walter) Brust,
Von (and Nora) Gaskill and Naomi Severs.
The family wishes to thank the thoughtful and caring staff at St.
Elizabeth's Hospital and Heartland Hospice for their care and
compassion shown to both Garnita and her family on her final day of her
88-year journey.
Garnita's compassion for the needs of the children at Baptist
Children's Home and Family Services was great and the family asks for
memorials in honor of Garnita to be made to them at 949 County Road,
1300 N., Carmi, IL 62821-9909, or Billy Graham Evangelistic
Association, 1 Billy Graham Parkway, Charlotte, NC 28201-0001.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 7, and from 9 to 10
a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, at First Baptist Church of O'Fallon, 1111 E. U.S.

Thebes, IL.--CHARLES E. “CHUCK” GOFORTH, age 50, died at his home in Thebes early this morning (1953) after an illness of several months. Mr. Goforth had taught school for the past 25 years, 12 years in Thebes school system as a teacher and coach. He is survived by his wife, Mary, one daughter, Mrs. Jo Ann Thompson of Marion, Il.; one son Charles W. of Thebes, his mother, Mrs. Elbert Goforth; five brothers, Gene of Campbell Hill, Il, Malcolm of Gainsville, Fla; Russell and Hubert of Carbondale, Il and Dale of Oakland, California; three grandchildren and other relatives. Funeral arrangements are incomplete, but will be announced later. Berbling Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements. (Charles E. "Chuck" Goforth's stone in Rose Hill Cemetery has b. 1902; d. 1953.)
Sports fans, school teachers and many were saddened to learn of the death of Thebes High Athletic Coach Monday. Mr. Charles Goforth had been ailing since the leave of the helm of his basketball team at Thebes. We had high hopes along with his family and friends that he would pull through. We drove to Thebes and visited him one afternoon several months ago and found Chuck cheerful and optimistic as he was always whether things were going well or poorly. Several weeks ago Thebes High appointed Mike Alcorn of Jonesboro as Chuck's successor, confirming reports we have during the summer that Chuck would be forced to retire from teaching and coaching due to ill health. His death Sunday night came as a real shock to us, since he had left St. Mary's Hospital again only days earlier and we were relieved at that time to see his name in the hospital report, feeling that he might be on the road to recovery. We join the hundred of friends who admired and respected Chuck (Charles) Goforth in offering our condolences to his widow, Mary, and his son Charles in Thebes, his daughter in Marion and his mother and brothers. Chuck Goforth was a fine teacher and a good coach and a credit, but above all he was a real gentleman and of his family, his school, and his community.--From the Cairo Evening Citizen as it was called at this time, during the 1950s ..Donated by Judy Simpson from the collection of Lena Hewitt Simpson.
