MC CRAVEN SCHOOL
Alexander County/Illinois Genealogy Trails
This school was located between McClure and Thebes in what is known as the Horse Creek area. It was on the Benefield's property, but the site has been washed away by the creek. It was District No. 24, Twp. 14 S, Range 3 W. A picture exists from 1894 with the only name mentioned as that of William Lee Caldwell. The instructor was Sam Campbell.
The school was still active in 1926 when Ruth Schales' mother took her final exams for the 8th grade and received her Eighth Grade Diploma. It reads:
DIPLOMA
THIS IS TO CERTIFY THAT
VIOLET GOLDSBORO
has completed with credit the Common Branches required by law to
be taught in the Public Schools of
Alexander County
and because of high intellectual attainments and correct
deportment
merits this Diploma

This card is also signed at the bottom by Lucy B. Twente, Co. Supt. of Schools, Cairo, Illinois, April 20, 1926.
