BAND

One of the most loyal and versatile of student groups is the School Band.  The Band contributed in no small measure to the kindling and strengtheing of school spirit.  Culminating in one major outdoor spring concert on May twelfth, the work of the Band also included appearances at the home Basketball games, and a special program at the Olive Branch High School for a rural school graduation exercise on April 28.

MUSIC CLUB

The Music Club, organized at the beginning of the year, is designed primarily to further cooperation among music students.  Its officers this year were:
Deryl Halbin, President
Mary Clutts Calvert, Vice-President
Frances Wilson, Sec'y-Treas.
The club's first activity was the sponsorship of a Halloween Carnival on October 29, in the school building.  An unusually large crowd attended the Carnival.  Highlights of the evening's fun included Bingo, Fortune telling, Make-up booths, Darts, Novelties, Popcorn, Soda, Tossing pennies, Cake walk, Grocery and Blanket raffles, and last, but certainly not least, the crowning of a High School Queen.
Candidates for Queen were:
Melle Louise Smiddy---Senior
Claire Elizabeth Hoover---Junior
Catherine McIntyre---Sophomore
Virginia Wilson---Freshman
Her Majesty, Miss Virginia Wilson, was crowned Queen of the Halloween Carnival.

GIRLS' CHORUS

The Girls' Chorus, composed of twenty-three voices, considers the annual Operetta, "The Saucy Hollandaise," its special achievement.  Other highlights of the year include numbers presented for a P. T. A. program, the outdoor band concert, and the Baccalaureate service.  The year's outstanding musical number was "I Am an American."

BASKETBALL

FIRST TEAM
The First Team came out with a record of eleven wins and twelve losses.  Most of the losses were of a margin of not more than two or three points which were tough to take.  In the District Tournament at Mound City, the boys were defeated by Grand Chain, after a bitterly contested battle, 29-27.

BACK ROW:  Franklin Bledsoe, Chester Lee Calvert, Jack Crain, Carlton Brown, Simon Hancock, Glenn Hopkins, Mr. Lundgren, Coach.
FRONT ROW:  Billy Ray Wilson, student manager, Carl Underwood, Archie Ray Guess, James McIntyre, Paul Gendron, Roy Bledsoe, Walter Pedigo, Mr. McDaniel, Coach.

The following boys composed the first team:
Carl (Chalky) Underwood--Sophomore--Chalky was the "little man with the big feet," but how he could move around.  Chalky played forward and did a whale of a job of it.  He has two more years to go which is a break for T. T. H. S.
Archie (Ock) Guess--Sophomore--
Ock played forward and along with Underwood they were one of the best scoring combinations ever developed at Thebes.  Ock also has two more years before graduating.
Paul (Parrot) Gendron--Junior--
Parrot had a dead eye for the basket and played both center and guard.  Parrot was standing captain of the team for all season.
Franklin (Sandy Ridge) Bledsoe--Senior--Sandy only participated in eleven games as he was graduated at mid-year.  Sandy was a very good defensive player and was much missed by the team.
Val Jean (Bobo) Hudgens--Senior--The team's towering six-foot-two center could stand up and drop 'em over the hoop and this he did, until he was graduated at mid-term.
Jack (Jackson) Crain--Junior--Although Jackson was slightly on the bulky side, he did a creditable job as guard.  Jackson was one of the mainstays of the team.
Walter (Boom) Pedigo--Freshman--Walter came up from Junior High with a good reputation as a basketball player, which he promptly confirmed as soon as the season got under way.  Boom was "sub" forward on the First Team, and regular on the Second Team.

SECOND TEAM
The Second Team enjoyed a very successful season, having fifteen wins against only four losses.  Many of the Second Team will make a strong bid for regular positions on the First Team the coming season.  The following boys compose the Second Team:

James (Meechum) McIntyre--Sophomore--
Meechum played forward on the Second Team along with Boom Pedigo.  Meechum always had the old fight and spirit to win.  He had a good eye for the basket and was one of the faster men on the squad.
Roy (Curly) Bledsoe--Junior--Roy was center and threatens to become as good a defensive player as his brother, Frank.
Chester (Luke) Calvert--Sophomore--Luke was forward and a very good one, too.  He has two more years to play for T. T. H. S.
Carlton (Cotton) Brown--Junior--Cotton, after getting a late start, developed into first string guard on the second team.
Simon (Cassanova) Hancock--Sophomore--Cassanova enrolled in T. T. H. S. at mid-year, and by so doing helped the second team toward its victorious season.
Bobby (Bob) Robertson--Freshman--Bob, because of ill health, did not come out until the latter part of the season was in full swing.  He played guard on the second team and clicked with the team fro the very beginning.
Glenn (Hoppy) Hopkins--Senior--Hoppy, like Robertson, did not get to report until the latter part of the season.  He added height and accuracy to the second team, playing center.

BASEBALL TEAM

BACK ROW:  Mr. McDaniel, coach, Glenn Hopkins, Carlton Brown, Franklin Bledsoe, Paul Gendron, Roy Bledsoe, Chester Lee Calvert.
FRONT ROW:  Bob Robertson, Eugene Brown, Walter Pedigo, Jack Crain, James McIntyre, Archie Ray Guess, Carl Underwood.

The baseball season got under way during the first week in September when around fifteen boys answered the call for "first practice."  Coaches were Mr. Lundgren and Mr. McDaniel.  The team was composed of the following boys:
Eugene Brown--Freshman--Gene, playing third, his first year in high school, did a very good job of it.  He has three years left and should be a "Grade A" player by his Senior year.
Paul Gendron--Junior--Paul played first and was one of the best in Southern Illinois High School competition.  He also was good with the stick.
Walter Pedigo--Freshman--Another Freshie that made good.  Pedigo did a real job at short and was deadly at the plate, hitting from either side.
Roy Bledsoe--Junior--Roy played left field and when the old apple came out his way, it was "in the well."
Carl Underwood--Sophomore--Carl was the sparkplug of the infield.  Playing second, his continual chatter was that of never giving up.  "Chalky" was also pretty good at the plate.
Jack Crain--Junior--Jack did the catching, and opposing runners knew better than to try to steal a base with him behind the plate.
James McIntyre--Sophomore--Meechum was the center fielder and he covered the outfield like a "book."  He also was swift on the bases.
Archie Guess--Sophomore--Archie was the right fielder and also was the distance hitter of the club.  He always came in for his share of extra base hits.
Glenn Hopkins--Senior--Glenn did the hurling, and a very commendable job too.  He had tough luck when he cut his thumb early in the fall of '43 and was lost until the Spring of '44.
Bob Robertson--Freshman--Bob switched from any position in the outfield to first base.  Bob was also a deadly man with the old stick.
Simon Hancock--Sophomore--Simon was the utility man of the squad, always willing to pitch in wherever he was needed.
