CAIRO -- MARTHA VAN CLEVE, 91, died Tuesday Dec. 20, 2011, in St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
She was born June 9, 1920, in Cairo, the daughter of the late John and Anna Creagan Luby.
She was a registered nurse before her retirement and was the former
director of nursing at St. Marys Hospital in Cairo and was the first
coordinator of the nursing program at Shawnee College in Ullin.
She received her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Loyola
University and was a veteran of World War II, serving as a nurse in the
Pacific at the rank of Lt. JG in the U.S. Navy. She was retired from
the U.S. Naval Reserves.
She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas VanCleve in 1995; two
brothers, Joseph and Edward Luby; and her sister, Cathleen Luby SSND.
Mrs. VanCleve is survived by two sons, John (Donette) VanCleve of
Wickliffe, Ky., and Thomas VanCleve, of Grand Marias, Minn.; her
daughter, Joan (Rick) Ball of Cobden; her sister, Anne Duncan of Cape
Girardeau; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and other
relatives.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday in St. Patricks
Church in Cairo. The Revs. John Agbasiere and Jerome Fortenberry will
concelebrate. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Villa Ridge.
Military Honors will be provided by local Veterans' organizations and
the U.S. Navy. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at St.
Patrick's Church in Cairo.

Tamms, IL.--DEATH CLAIMS A. R. VANSICKLE, TAMMS RESIDENT--Prominent Merchant There Succumbs to Paralytic Stroke--A. R. VANSICKLE,
aged 79 years, passed away at his home in Tamms, Ill., at 6 o'clock
this morning. He has been helpless for past six weeks the result
of a second stroke of paralysis, and for several days his death has
been expected. He was first stricken two years ago. Funeral
services will be held at the Reformed Church in Tamms Thursday at 1:30
o'clock, conducted by Rev. H. A. Hoar of Anna, and the body will be
brought to Cairo, and taken on the afternoon Big Four train to
Martinsville, Ind., to be buried there Friday afternoon in the family
burying ground. Mr. VanSickle was a native of Martinsville, and was
born on Feb. 27, 1842. He removed to Tamms twenty years ago on
July 1st next, and there four years ago celebrated his golden wedding
anniversary. His wife died last August. Surviving are three
daughters and two sons, Mrs. J. J. Pratt of Martinsville, Ind., W. T.
VanSickle of Tamms, Mrs. J. L. Birlingmier of Freesoil, Mich.,
County Commissioner J. A. Vansickle of Cairo, and Mrs. F. D. Bohannon
of Murphysboro. Mr. VanSickle was engaged in the lumber and hardware
business at Tamms and Thebes with his son, J. A. VanSickle, the firms
name being A. R. VanSickle and Son. He served in the
Twenty-Seventh Indiana regiment in the civil war. He was a member
of the Masonic and Knights of Pythias lodges, and was a charter member
of the Reformed Church at Tamms and served as elder of the church,
altho previous to his removal to Tamms he was a Methodist. The
organization of the Reformed Church at Tamms, in which he had a large
part, was the result of a union effort of the people there of various

Miller City, IL.--EULA SCHLAMER VAUGHN, 81, of Miller City, formerly of Olive Branch died at 4:38 am Sunday, October 11, 1992, at the home of her daughter, Barbara Willoughby, in Miller City. Mrs. Vaughn was born November 12, 1910, at Cache, the daughter of the late Emile Schlamer and Jennie Hewitt Schlamer. Mrs. Vaughn was preceded in death by her husband William Franklin Vaughn on October 26, 1985. Survivors include three sons, Frank Vaughn and William E. Vaughn, both of Olive Branch, and David Vaughn of Bellflower; six daughters, Genevieve Thomas and Barbara Willoughby, both of Miller City, Nora Thompson and Sue Biggar both of Plano, Tx, Mary Lingle of Thebes and Mrs. Fay Kowitz of Orange, Ca; one sister, Emma Hinton of Olive Branch; four brothers, Gerald, Louis and Dick of Thebes and Carl Schlamer of Wood River; 27 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson. Graveside funeral services for Mrs. Vaughn were held at 1pm on Monday, October 12, 1992, at Spencer Heights Cemetery in Mounds with the Rev. Darryl Neathery officiating. Tamms, IL.--Mrs. Julia Vaughn Passes Away at Her Home in Tamms, Ill.--MRS. JULIA ANN LEMMONS VAUGHN, who died at Tamms last Thursday, Sept. 17, at the age of 61, was born Jan. 11, 1870, and was married to Thomas J. Vaughn in 1892. They had four children, Harris Vaughn of St. Louis, George Vaughn of Chicago, Thomas Vaughn of Tamms, and Mrs. Idesia Wemberly who cared for her mother during her last months of illness. Mr. Vaughn died in September, 1927, since which time the mother has kept the children together and educated them. Mrs. Vaughn was a member of the Presbyterian denomination until she removed to Tamms about 18 years ago, when she united with the Tamms Baptist church. She was a charter member of the Royal Neighbors, Tamms Egyptian Camp. Surviving besides her immediate family is a sister, Mrs. T. C. Smith of Dexter, Mo. Funeral services were held from the Tamms Baptist church with burial at Olive Branch cemetery, Elder D. H. Smith officiating. MCCURE, IL–DYLAN JACOB VICK, infant son of Todd and Crystal (Pfeffer) Vick, died at birth Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, in Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. Services were Thursday, Jan. 8, 2009, in St. John's Cemetery in Dongola, with the Rev. Mark Kirk officiating. Crain Funeral Home in Tamms was in charge of arrangements. Tamms, IL--GRACE KATHLEEN VICK, 96, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and formerly of Tamms, died Thursday, March 6, 2008 at NHC in Murfreesboro. She was born in Jackson, Tenn., daughter of Adolph and Eva Neal Schefold. She married Claud Vick, and he preceded her in death. Vick and her husband owned Vick Store Co. in Tamms. She was a member of Southeast Baptist Church in Murfreesboro. Survivors include a son, Claud L. Vick, Jr. of Murfreesboro; a granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers. Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel in Murfreesboro. The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. Cairo, IL.--MRS. V. VINCENT, OLD RESIDENT OF CAIRO, DIES--MRS. VIRGINIE VINCENT,
one of Cairo's oldest resident; died Friday morning at her home, 223
Ninth street, following a serious illness of about four weeks.
She would have been ninety years old next January, her birthday being
January 5. She was born in St. Victorie de Malcap, France, in the
year 1834, coming to this country shortly after her marriage at sixteen
years of age. She made her home in New Orleans, later going with
her family to Yazoo City, Miss. She came to Cairo many years ago
with her family and has made her home here continually since then.
Mrs. Vincent is survived by four children, Henry Eugene Vincent, of
Cairo, Mrs. Ed Rodecker of East St. Louis, Ill., Mirabeau Victor Hugo
Vincent and Mrs. J. B. Wall of Cairo; also a granddaughter, Miss Nellie
Mercedes Vincent of Cairo and a grandson, Victor Hugo Vincent of St.
Louis.
Funeral arrangements have not been completed but will probably be held
Sunday at the residence. Father Bernard Monoghan, pastor of St.
Patrick's church, assisted by Rev. L. A. Crittenton, rector of the
Church of the Redeemer, will conduct the services, and interment will
be made in Beech Grove cemetery.
Mrs. Vincent was a woman of beautiful character, gentle and kind to all
and of a sunny disposition that won her many close friends. All
members of her immediate family were at her bedside when she passed
away, leaving this world after living a happy, patient and contented
life among her loved ones.

VINCENT--Died at her residence, 227 Ninth street, Mrs. Virginie
Vincent, aged 89 years, 10 months and 7 days, Friday November 7th,
1924. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 1:30
o'clock at the residence conducted by Father Monoghan of St. Patrick's
church. Immediately after services the funeral party will leave
by automobile for Beech Grove cemetery where interment will take place.
(Note: The address in the obit says 223 Ninth St., but the date in the
Funeral notice says 227 Ninth St. so that's how I have left them).

Cairo, IL.--GEORGE VINES,
age 74, died this morning at St. Mary's Hospital after a short
illness. He made his home at 3112 Sycamore Street and has been a
resident of Cairo for the past 35 years. He was a carpenter by
trade. Mr. Vines is survived by his wife, Nora; three sons, Guy of
Kewanee, Mo., Clyde of E. Chicago, Ind., and W. E. of Mound City; one
daughter, Mrs. Nellie Clifford of Villa Ridge, 15 grandchildren and
seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Tempe Kennedy of Mound
City; three brothers, Charlie Vines of Waukegan and Tom and J. W. Vines
of Mound City and other relatives. Funeral arrangements are incomplete
but will be announced later. Karcher Brothers are in charge of

Funeral services for George Vines, age 74, who died at St. Mary's
Hospital Monday morning after a short illness, will be held at Karcher
Brothers Funeral Home Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. McGinniss
officiating. Interment will be made in Thistlewood Cemetery. The body
is at Karcher Brothers Funeral Home where friends may call. --From the

Tamms, Ill.--RICHARD S. VOLLINTINE, 60, of Tamms, formerly of Wood River, Ill., died Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at his home. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to service time Wednesday at Crain Funeral Home in Tamms. The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. KANSAS CITY, MO–WILLIAM E. VOWELS,
83, Kansas City in Platte County, died March 5, 1994, at the Smithville
Campus of St. Luke's Northland Hospital. Friends may call from 6:30 to
8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Newcomer's White Chapel.
Mr. Vowels was born in Wyatt, Mo., and lived in Cairo, Ill., St. Louis,
and Gale, Ill., before moving to Kansas City in 1988. He was a machine
operator for the Sterling Aluminum Piston Co., St. Louis, for 20 years
before he retired. He attended Zion Lutheran Church, St. Louis. He was
a former assistant scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts.
Survivors include his wife, Helen M. Vowels of the home; two sons,
Ronald Vowels, Rockford, Ill., and Phillip D. Vowels, Kansas City; a
daughter, Judith Murphy, Alamogordo, N.M.; a sister, Corine Vowels,
Carroll, Ill.; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
