BASEBALL
TOP ROW--Clark, principal; Dunning, T.; Bufford;
Davidson; Abercrombie; Scott; Jones; Dunning, A.; Riggs; Chisum; Grace;
McCable, manager.
BOTTOM ROW--Hogan, B. B.; Poole; McNeilly; Croft; McDaniel; Bean; Childers; Coach Peterson.
With only four lettermen as a nucleus, Coach
Peterson developed a winning nine, which lost only one conference game.
The Tamms Yellow Jackets tied for first place in the newly
organized U. and A. Conference, but lost in a play-off with Olive
Branch by a score of 8-5. Highlights of the season were the
victories over Wolf Lake and Olive Branch.
To Capt. McDaniel, pitcher, goes a large part of
the splendid showing of the team. His hurling was superb,
allowing only an average of three hits per game, with two no-hit games
to his credit. McDaniel also led his team's hitting with an
average of .417. Scott, Childers, Croft, Chisum and A. Dunning
all hit around the three hundred mark.
Spring baseball is now getting under way, and prospects look bright for another championship team. |
BASKET BALL
TOP ROW--Clark, principal; Greer, manager; Piercy; Jones; Dunning; Poole; West; Peterson, Coach; McCabe, manager.
BOTTOM ROW--Chappell; Croft; McNeilly; Mitchell; Captain McDaniel; Scott; Chisum.
After a slow start Tamms closed a successful season
by winning 9 out of 19 scheduled games, winning consolation
championship in the Thebes Invitational Tournament, and tying for first
place in the U. and A. County Conference. In the Anna district
tournament Tamms defeated Thebes in a thrilling battle by the score of
31-30; then dropped a close contest to Mound City, 31-26, in the
quarter finals. The team scored a total of 659 points during the
season with McDaniel leading the individual scoring with 149 points,
with Chisum a close second with 145. During the close of the
season, when the Peterson-coached squad won seven consecutive games,
the stellar defensive work of Capt. Mitchell and McNeilly, Seniors, was
outstanding. Scott and Chappell aided materially by scoring at
opportune times and displaying a good brand of ball. |
