Weeks Brothers Meat Market
Update: The school and the Weeks
Brothers Meat Market are definitely Bureau locations. I walked to the store
on a daily basis.- Gloria Nabors
Bureau County Elementary School
From Gloria Nabors:
"The school in your photos were in the town of Bureau. That is what it was
called when I was there, but I believe our diplomas read, Bureau County,
Bureau Illinois. The store in your photos was on the main street in Bureau
just down the street from the post office, next to the railroad tracks. (The
post office was next to the depot).
My home town during the elementary school years was Bureau County School District. I began there during the 3rd day year and continued thru the 8th grade, graduating from there and onto Princeton High School. We got on the school bus in front of the US Post Office just next to the depot. As you crossed the railroad tracks away from town on the corner was a Thomas Tavern. Down the street in front of the tavern to the right and down the side walk, a block down next to the railroad tracks was a 2 story home. It was green in color with a large closed-in front porch with a sidewalk in front. This was the side of town close to the Hennepin River. The school and the Weeks Brothers Meat Market are definitely Bureau County locations. I walked to the store on a daily bases.
I can see my house in the photos across from the railroad along with all the other familiar buildings and landscaping. I was familiar with the Thomas's that owned the Thomas Tavern on the corner next to the railroad. The Mayor live next to the tavern. The uncle of the Thomas's was the police officer at that time."
