Ralph A. Thain Son of Mrs. Kasper Thain, born at Savanna, Illinois April 3, 1891. Inducted into the service at Camp Grant, Illinois March 29, 1918. Served with the 108th Ammunition Train.

Private Jack Thompson Son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Thompson, born at Savanna, Illinois; volunteered for service at Columbus, Ohio and again at New Orleans in 1908 and 1915 respectively, served overseas with 81st Co. 5th Regiment Marines, participating in every 2nd Division engagement overseas.

Corporal Irvin Francis Tyler Son of Albert A. and Agnes M. Tyler, born at Madison, Wisconsin April 1888; inducted for service at Mt. Carroll, Illinois October 2nd, 1917; served overseas 13 months with Co. D. 132nd Infantry, 33rd Division, participating in battles on Troyon Sector, Amiens Sector, Meuse-Argonne, B. E. F. Served in the Army of Occupation in Luxembourg.

Private 1Cl George Ulmer Son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Ulmer, born at Savanna, Illinois August 11, 1898; volunteered for service at Des Moines, Iowa September 1, 1917; served enlistment in the Quartermaster Corps.

Private Arling C. Van Bibber Son of George and Elizabeth Van Bibber, born at Savanna, Illinois July 7, 1893. Volunteered for service at Miles City, Montana and was sent overseas with Co. E. 163rd Infantry, transferred to Co. C. 16th Infantry, 1st Division. Took part in the offensives at Cantigny, Soissons and Marne counter-offensives, later in the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne offensive. Killed in action in the Argonne Forest, October 8, 1918.

Private Herbert Van Bibber Son of George and Elizabeth Van Bibber, born at Savanna, Illinois September 1899. Volunteered for service at Cleveland, Ohio October 17, 1917. Served overseas 11 months with 476 Aeor Squadron.






Corporal Paul Samuel Wallace Son of William S. and Elizabeth H. Wallace, born at Henry, Illinois April 1895. Volunteered for service at Chicago, Illinois June 4, 1917. Served with 13th Railway Engineers. Active service with French 4th Army at Champagne, and French 2nd Army at Verdun, St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne Ofensives. Overseas two years.

William Samuel Wallace Y. M. C. A. Volunteered for Y. M. C. A. service August 31, 1917 and sailed for overseas service in October, 1917. Was assigned as business Secretary, then made Divisional Secretary, and later made Regional Secretary. Returned to the U. S. February 19191 and returned to France in April 1919, on his return was made Associate General Field Secretary with headquarters in Paris. Returned to American August 1919.

Cook Albert W. Warfield Son of Anna N. Warfield, born at Savanna, Illinois February 27, 1896. Inducted into the service at Camp Grant, Illinois October 3rd, 1917. Served with the Headquarters Troop, 7th Division.






Corporal James V. Warfield Son of Anna N. Warfield, born at York Township, Carroll County, Illinois April 20, 1891. Indu cted in the service at Mt. Carroll, Illinois October 3, 1917. Served in Co. E. 127th Infantry, 32nd Division. Active service in Marne Offensive, Juvigny, and Meuse-Argonne. Wounded in chest. Army of Occupation at Selters, Germany. Overseas service 14 months.

Ernest Judson Waterman Born at New Lisbon, Wisconsin August 30, 1895; volunteered for service at Chicago, Illinois May 30, 1917; served 22 months overseas with 58th Co. 13th Engineers. Served in the Army of Occupation in Germany.

Private 1CL Joseph Weatherall Son of Allen Weatherall, born at Ecra, Mississippi July 12, 1895. Inducted into the service at Camp Grant, Illinois October 28, 1917. Served with the 365th Infantry. Overseas 8 months.

Phar. M. 3CL Ray R. Westfall Son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Westfall, born at Savanna, Illinois April 1896; volunteered for service in the U. S. Navy at Chicago, Illinois July 31, 1917. Served one year aboard transport, U. S. S. DeKalb, making numerous trips overseas.

1st Lieut. Wayne E. Whistler Son of Charles R. and Anna May Whistler, born at Savanna, Illinois June 1893; volunteered for service in Chicago, Illinois May 22, 1917; served overseas 21 months with the 13th Railway engineers on the Verdun Sector, St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne Offensives.






Corporal Bernard Lyle White Son of Mrs. Emma White, born at Savanna, Illinois in June 1899; volunteered for service at Paris Island, South Carolina May 22, 1917; served overseas 20 months with 81st Co. Marines, 6th Machine Gun Battalion, 2nd Division, participating in battles on the Troyon, Toulon, Chateau Thierry, Soissons, Champagne, St. Mihiel, Ponta Musson, and Meuse-Argonne Sectors. Received French decoration of Croix de Guerre for bravery in action. Served in Army of Occupation in Germany.

Claude Wilcox Entered service at Albert Lea, Minnesota May 17, 1918 and went to Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana for training, sailed for France with the 44th Engineers July 30, 1918, returning July 23, 1919 after nearly 12 months service overseas.

Private 1CL Frank S. Wilder Son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugune Craig, born at Savanna, Illinois June 2, 1889; inducted into the service May 4, 1918 at Jefferson Barracks, Mo. Served in Co. G. 56th Infantry, 7th Division. Active service in Puvenelle Sector, and Army of Occupation, Luxembourg. Gassed Nov. 3, 1918. Overseas one year.

Sergeant Harold H. Wilson - no photo - Born at Rock Island, Illinois; inducted for service at Mt. Carroll, Illinois October 3rd, 1917; served overseas 15 months with 59th Infantry Machine Gun Co., participating in the Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne Offensives.

Corporal Charles G. Winkey Son of Mrs. Gus A. Winkey, born at Coleta, Illinois, September 16, 1918; volunteered for service at Freeport, Illinois May 21, 1918; served overseas 8 months with 465th Motor Truck Co. 417 Motor Supply Train. Participated in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. (Note: Obviously his date of birth is incorrect as entered in this book. I checked the Social Security Death Index and it shows a Charles Winkey whose residence at death was Savanna, Illinois and whose date of birth was September 16, 1897. I feel certain this is him. There was no listing for him in the WWI Draft Registration Cards 1917-1918, at least not as an Illinois resident.)

Corporal Will H. Winkey Son of Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Winkey, born at Savanna, Illinois, volunteered for service at Rockford, Illinois May 25th, 1917; served overseas in the 132nd Infantry and was wounded in action.

PHR. M. 3CL Fred Christian Withhart Son of Mr. and Mrs. F. P. Withhart, born at Savanna, Illinois November 23, 1895; volunteered in the U. S. Navy at Chicago, Illinois August 16, 1917; service aboard the U. S. S. Pueblo doing convoy duty. Was engaged in several submarine battles.
