NORMAN D. FRENCH

York Township

Carroll Co IL

Son of Jacob and Permelia French. Born at Cambridge, Vermont, 1 Jan 1810 and came to Fulton County, Illinois in Dec 1832;

Soon after went to Jo Daviess County, and was engaged on the Government Survey under Deputy U. S. Surveyor, C. R. Bennet, for a number of years, and then settled on his present farm in 1838, located on Sec. 17, Tp. 23, Range 4, York (Township, Carroll County, Illinois).

Mr. French came to this state with no means, but by industry and economy has amassed a handsome property, having in his home farm a full section, beside other lands lying in other parts. He is extensively engaged in farming and stock raising, superintending all his own business, and this season gathered his 40th crop from the farm where he first settled;

Has held the offices of Justice of the Peace, Postmaster, County Commissioner, Supervisor and Collector. He collected the first tax levied in Carroll County, often traveling many miles to get the small sum of 10-cents, the entire tax at that time being only about $200.

As noting the change since that time, Mr. French now pays an annual tax on his own property of from five to six times the amount then collected in the entire County.
