WILLIAM THOMAS LAW

William Thomas Law, a leading grocer of Savanna, and one of its most prominent citizens, is a native of this county, and was born in Washington Township, Sept. 12, 1848 the son of Andrew and Ann (Crothers) Law . They were among the pioneers of this county, and are held in high esteem wherever known.

The subject of this sketch was reared a farmer's boy, and educated in the district school. When 22 years of age he decided upon a change of occupation and accordingly established himself at Savanna in the grocery business, in company with his brother-in-law W.B. Law, they continuing together two years. The interest of the latter in the business was then purchased by Mr. Fred Schall, and under the firm name of Law & Schall was conducted one and on-half years. Our subject then disposed of his interest to his partner, and putting up a frame building, starte din the grocery trade singly and alone,a nd was thus occupied until 1887. Then, selling out, he went to Winfield, Kan., where he was engaged in the grocery business a period of seven months. Next, selling out there also, he returned to Savanna, and commenced business at his present location. He is building up a good trade, and has many friend both in social and business circles.

Mr. Law was married in September 1871 to Elizabeth Irwin, daughter of Alexander and Margaret Irwin. This union has resulted in the birth of six children - Irwin H., Annie, Ralph, Hattie, Bessie and a baby unnamed. Mr. Law in religious matters is a member of the United Presbyterian Church and politically, a sound Republican. He has represented his ward in the City Council, and was a member of the School Board.
