and Laura (Strong) Chambers, died September 1884. They
were one time owners of the Chamber House Hotel in
Savanna, Illinois.

Coleman Miles (Tony). Birthday and Place: November 30,
1890 Mt. Carroll. Died January 27, 1969. Coleman Miles
was the son of Joseph Shirk Miles born April 4, 1860. Died
April 1, 1943, and Mary Grace (Coleman) Miles born
March 10, 1865. Died 1935.

November 20, 1960 to Captain John Brown Rhodes born
November 20, 1817; died September 9, 1906. He came to
Savanna in July 1841. In 1846 he was elected sheriff and
again in 1848. He was also the first tax collector. He
engaged in steam boating in 1852 and remained in this
business for number of years until he engaged in a grocery
store, until retiring. In March 1846 Mr. Rhodes was
married to Miss Mary Jane Pierce, (born May 8, 1829,
died November 14, 1877) the first white child born in the
territory now embraced in Carroll County. She was born in
the old Indian Council house, Savanna. There were eight
children born to this union of which Thomas Brown was
the fifth. Thomas moved to Mt. Carroll where he lived as a
very successful business man until retirement. He passed
away October 26, 1950.
