John G. Smith

John G. Smith is prosperously engaged in farming and stock-raising on section 26, Salem Township, where he owns a good farm of 118 1/2 acres, under excellent tillage, and provided with suitable buildings. He is a native of Prussia, born July 3, 1842. He was reared on a farm in the Fatherland, and in 1866,in full vigor of early manhood, left his old home to see what life held for him in the United States. After landing on these shores, he came directly from New York to Mt. carroll, in this county. Being strong, active and competent he had no difficulty in finding work, and was employed in Salem and Fair Haven townships until March, 1876. He and his wife and daughter Sadie B., are esteemed members of the German Baptist, or Dunkard Church, and in their daily lives exemplify its Christian teachings. Mr. Smith has filled the office of School Director two terms, and in that capacity has endeavored to advance the educational interests of this township. In politices, the Democratic party finds in him a faithful follower.
