FREE FAMILY CEMETERY
Leroy Getz found this cemetery for us in August 2005. He says -
" The Free Family cemetery is located along Hwy. 64 at Roberts Road in Sec. #7, Mt. Carroll Twp. It is not maintained by the Twp Cemetery Dist. but is located on private property owned by a warehouse firm at 11834 Roberts Road, Savanna, Illinois.
The stones that were still there have been laid in a safe area under an oak tree at the west end of the warehouse office.
(These stones are very hard to read and I was not equipped with tools to clean them and since no one was present and I was on private property I only took the pictures as they were.)
Morris Free - 10 years old
Infant son of - N or M. & A. Graves
Catherine Free - 1 year old also
Thomas Free - 2 weeks old
Infant - 1 year, 7 months old
Elizabeth - wife of A. Santow - 13 (prob. 43) Years, 10 days
Terry Rowland's website on World Connect has this information.
"A cemetery plot started by Samuel and Catherine on property
once owned by them is located on Hwy 64 between Savanna and Mt. Carroll,
Carroll County, Illinois. Only 5 marked graves, legend says 16 graves are
actually located in the plot. His source were the records of Esther Vance and Geneva Combes.
November 2007 - Terry Rowland was able to provide some further details.
The tombstone marked "Elizabeth - wife of A. Santow?? - 13 (prob. 43) Years, 10 days"
I believe this to be Elizabeth Miller, Ashford Saxton's first wife.
Harriet Free married Morris Saxton
I can't quite make out the Morris tombstone, but it appears to be another child of theirs named after Catherines brother Morris. I would love to have a guess on the dates not visible in the picture
One of the remaining Free and Saxton siblings family continue to intertwine. These siblings are the ones in which I descend from.
Susan Free (sister to Harriet, Mary, and Samuel) married Timothy Wallace
Charlotte Saxton (sister to Morris, John, and Catherine) married Elijah Sanders
Their respective children Tilman Wallace and Matilda Jane Sanders married. Connecting yet one more (the 4th!) group of Free Saxton siblings !! It was great fun to unravel this group!!!
Ephraim has me puzzled.
The marker that says son of & A. Grave . I believe is the son of William Graves and Amelia Lister
