Katherina Geisz arrived in Fair Haven from Hesse Darmstadt in the 1850's with her daughter Anna Katharina [ John Sauer], her husband Conrad Geiss and her father-in-law Conrad Geiss Sr.
The deaths of Conrad Jr and Sr are recorded at Black Oak Lutheran, but their graves at Black Oak cemetery are unmarked or the headstones destroyed. - Photo from Glenda Richter.
John Sauer, his wife Anna Katherine Geisz and their son Heinrich Conrad Sauer
John Sauer arrived in Carroll County in 1853 from Eckartsborn in Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, and lived briefly with the Henry Weber family in Salem Township. In 1863 John declared his intention to become a US citizen. In 1865 he answered the last call for Civil War soldiers and joined the 43rd Illinois Infantry. Two years later in 1867 he received his full citizenship.
In 1863 John married Anna Katherina Geisz, daughter of Conrad and Katherina Geisz, at Black Oak Lutheran in Fair Haven. All four of their children were baptized at Black Oak. They include
Mina Catherine Sauer Richter (Jacob) (Dec 12, 1865-Nov 23, 1947) buried at Oak Hill
Heinrich Conrad Sauer (single) (June 18, 1868 to Oct 12, 1882) buried at Trinity Lutheran*
Johann Heinrich Sauer (Katy Tripp) (July 10, 1877 to March 20, 1955) buried at Bethel Cemetery, Milledgeville
Charles Sauer (1884--unknown). According to the 1893 plat map, John owned 100 acres in Section 17 of Fair Haven Township. By 1908, the original John Sauer farm plus an adjacent 40 acres was owned by John [Johann Heinrich] and Katy [Tripp] Sauer. John and Katy continued to work this 140 acre family farm and to raise their family there.

J. Gottlieb & Johanna S. Richter
J Gottlieb and Johanna Sophia Richter arrived in Mt. Carroll from Prussia in the late 1860's. Mr Richter was naturalized in 1874. In the 1870 census J Gottlieb and Johanna are living on the farm next to John G and Elizabeth Richter. [ If they are not John G's parents, they may be his godparents.] John Gottlieb is listed in the 1878 History of Carroll County as JG Richter.
John G. & Elizabeth (Weidman) Richter and son John L Richter
John G Richter was born in Prussia on July 8, 1832. He came to the village of Mt. Carroll in 1856 and was naturalized in 1860. He married Elizabeth Weidman in 1859. John G purchased his first land in sections 17 and 19 of Salem Township in 1863, and according to the History of Carroll County by 1878 owned 356 acres of land in Salem and held the office of Commissioner of Highways.
John G and Elizabeth had three children, all confirmed at Black Oak Lutheran Church in 1880.
