THE GLEN VIEW HOTEL - Mt. CARROLL

The Glen View Hotel was built in 1866. It was the most up to date, modern building of its kind, in the area.

At 6:20 on a Tuesday Evening, March 16, 1894 the Hotel Glen View managed to catch on fire.

The fire company and hook and ladder boys were out there in three minutes flat.
It seemed the work of a minute and they had a stream playing in the laundry room where the fire had originated from the careless filling of a gasoline stove. The flames were soon subdued with a loss to the structure of about $200.00 and approximately $100.00 in linens, all covered by insurance. Guests of the hotel were only delayed a half hour for their supper. Twenty-three dollars were donated by citizens to the firemen for their good work.
Thanks to the Carroll County "A Goodly Heritage" for this little story.

The Glen View Hotel was sold Thursday to Earl Bickelhaupt of Clinton Iowa for $9,000.00. Sale of the property by the receiver of the First Carroll County State Bank was approved Thursday morning in circuit court by Judge Harry E. Wheat. The property in turn was sold by Bickelhaupt to Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Thayer who have been managing the hotel for several months. Mrs. Thayer said extensive improvements have been planned for the building. (From the Freeport Journal Standard 28 July 1939)

The Hotel closed in 1976 and is now a Craft and Antiques Shop.
