Andreas died in Weiden, Schwarzwald, Wuerttemberg, Germany, on 1 Nov 1854; he was 65. Occupation: weaver, watchman. Religion: Lutheran.
In January 1988 James and Jean Kaufman of Dubuque, Iowa, visited their daughters in Germany. WIth the help of a German researcher they were able to find and translate family records located in the pastor's study in the parsonage across the street from the Evangelical Church in Aistaig, Wuerttemberg, Germany. Eathel Wacker Weidman has captured their research in her book The Name is Kaufman 1590 - 1993.
According to Eathel's book, Andreas was a weaver and "shooter" in Weiden, Schwarzwald, Wuerttemberg, Germany. Eathel describes a "shooter" as a policeman or watchman. One day before 1838 Anna very suddenly went blind; her two youngest sons, Christian and Johannes, were born after she became blind.
Shortly after their son Daniel left in 1851 the family home was burned down and Anna died not long after on 25 Nov 1851.1

Daniel was born on 21 Aug 1820, before her marriage to Andreas Kauffmann. His birth was originally recorded as SCHMALZ, then lined out and KAUFMANN name added in church records of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Aistaig Parish. His parents were married Wednesday, 9 Mar 1821. Daniel was confirmed in the Lutheran Church in 1834 at the age of 14; his life from 1834 to 1851 is undocumented.
Daniel came to America in 1851, landing at New York, and then walking to Carroll County. He married Fanny Summy in 1857 and at about the same time began attendig the Church of the Brethren, the faith in which Fanny was raised. On 29 Sep 1864 he declared his intention to become a citizen, and on 26 Sep 1868 he became naturalized.
In 1872 he purchased a farm in Freedom Township. He sold the farm in 1889 to his daughter Ida Mae and her husband George Rausch; Daniel bought a home for his retirement in the West Carroll Addition of Mount Carroll.1
On 30 Apr 1857 when Daniel was 36, he married Fanny Summy, daughter of Christian Summy & Eve Harshbarger, in Carroll County, Illinois.8,9 Born on 3 Nov 1830 in Sommerset, Pennsylvania. Fanny died in Mt Carroll, Carroll, Illinois, on 7 Aug 1899; she was 68.
