Henry Daniel Rowland, the son of Henry D. & Mary Thomas (Shively) Rowland,
was born about 1781 in Lancaster County PA. Henry might well
have been the first Rowland to set foot in Illinois or at least in this
part of the state.
Henry and his wife Elizabeth B. Heffelbower, daughter of Johann & Sarah (Zug) Heffelbower,
born in 1789 Maryland - died 1848), along with two sons - John and Benjamin Franklin Rowland came to
Illinois together. They first moved from Pennsylvania to Virginia,
near Harper's Ferry where he operated a
Grist Mill for some time. The Mill burned in 1847, he then moved his
family of 10 children to Ogle Co., IL. Henry Rowland died 18 March 1851 and is buried in Polo, Ogle County IL along with his wife Elizabeth.
The Goodly Heritage 1968 has the following:
He sold his farm and bought one in Cherry Grove which he later sold to his son-in-law, John R. Wolf. John and his wife, Emma Mellinger, made thir home there for 18 years. They had six children, May, Sibyl, Guy, Grace, Lloyd and Fred.
This farm was deeded by her parents to May Wolf Sword , 45 acres, and Sibyl Wolf Rowland 136 acres who still retains her land. At the death of May Wolf the farm fell to Joy W. Sword who sold his acres to Ray Lower, great, great grandson. Homestead papers were signed by President James K. Polk which are still in the family.
The Rowland family history parallels that of the Mellingers. John Rowland and wife Sarah Puterbaugh, came by horse and buggy from PA in 1847 and bought a section of land from the government in Cherry Grove township, according to family records.
The deed was signed by President Polk. The farm is now owned by Sibyl Rowland and her son, John Loren Rowland. The original house and barn are still on the farm more than 100 years after the Rowland took up the homestead claim from the U.S. land office which at the time was in Dixon.
