Savanna Journal 25 May 1910

D.W. Zullinger of Lanark, who has been sick for several weeks, died SUnday afternoon about three o'clock at the home of his daughter Mrs. Lloyd WOlf. He has been a constant sufferer for most of the time during his illness.

Miss Emily Snively is spending her spring vacation here with her parents, Miss Snively is a teacher at the Y. W. C. A. in St. Louis, Mo.

Misses Elizabeth Harmon and Beatrice Burkhart are home from Monmouth college for a week's vacation.

John Tallman remains in a serious condition at his home here. Mr. Tallman suffered several light strokes and at the age of 90 his condition is considered quite serious. Harry Tallman of Augusta, Mont., has been called here on account of the serious illness of his father, John Tallman.

Miss Beatrice Ellen Rahn is doing office work at the W.. T. Rawleigh manufacturing co. in Freeport.

Daniel Baumgartner of Stutgart, Ark., is visitng relatives here.

An article in the Rockford Daily Republic a few days ago said that shuffle boards are to be installed in several of the parks in that city. Although Lanark does not have any parks, it has a wide-awake citizen. W. H. Puterbaugh, who spent the winter in the South, and who has made arrangements to put one in at his residence. Everything has been completed but the cement slab, which will be 52 feet long and six feet wide. A diagram is drawn at each end and the players use a cue to shoot the wooden disks the length of the courts. Mr. Puterbaugh says it is the most interesting game of the day, and may be enjoyed by both women and men. The slab will be installed as soon as weather permits.

The results of the city election held her yesterday were as follows, mayor, Guy Wolf; clerk R. D. Bray; treasurer, S. R. Brenneman; alderman, first ward, Edward Peters; second ward, Charles Lampbert; third ward, E. E. Johnson; police magistrate, Glen Wise. The names of Roe Snivley and Lloyd Sunbaum were written in for the office of mayor. There were no other contests on the ticket. The election was very quiet. (From Margaret Mangers)

Unknown Paper 29 January 1931

Clare Reynolds, aged 19 years, was arrested Wednesday on the charge of the theft of a Ford car from the Ford garage at Lanark, Ill., on June 21 or 22 of last year. The evidence was secured through the state highway officers headed by Hal Roberts of Dixon. Wednesday Sergeant Oliver “Buck” Kempster, and Officers Roberts, Kenneth Church, and Frank Tyne of Dixon motored to the home of Reynolds which is between Milledgeville and Chadwick and about a mile east of route 40 paving. Reynolds was picked up and was taken to Mount Carroll. He admitted the theft of the car and was bound over to the action of the grand jury. Reynolds was released under bonds which were furnished by his father, Howard Reynolds. The state officers are making a thorough checkup of the robbery and expect further developments. Mason Hacker of the bandit gang is said to have been an accomplice of Reynolds in the theft of the car.

Sterling Daily Gazette January 26, 1938

Born, a son to Mr. and Mrs. Carl Merchant of Lanark at the Deaconess hospital in Freeport, Monday night.

The office rooms of the old First National bank at Lanark have been redecorated and will be occupied by the Carroll Service Co., after the first of February.

Harve Mathis, who has been employed at the Farmers Co-operative elevator, has resigned his position and taken a traveling job. His place there will be taken by Frank Kimmell.

Mrs. Fannie Robinson, who has lived in Chicago since the death of her husband, will return to Lanark and make her home at the Lanark Guest house.

The Earl Burkholder family will move to the Will Miller farm. The farm now occupied by Burkholder will be tenanted by Kenneth Kaut.

Mrs. Maurice Horner and daughter are moving to their new home on West Pearl street the first of February. Treeman Clevedence will move to the Herner home.

Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Lower are moving to the Clyde Lower farm west of Lanark.

Mrs. Harry Engles returned home Monday after a visit to her husband at the Hines hospital. Mr. Engles is very much improved in health and will be able to be home soon.

The Lanark fire dept. was called to the home of Mrs. George Snyder Monday when the chimney burned out and caused over heated air pipes. There was no damage.

Mrs. Geo. Hammond submitted to a major operation at the Deaconess hospital Monday and is in a very critical condition.

Al Furhmann of the Furhmann Canning company is in Chicago attending the canners' convention. Myron Krause, Howard Furhmann, Clint Rowland and Clarence Twiton left Wednesday to attend the convention.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Moore are visiting in Lanark this week. Mr. Moore was the former proprietor of the Food Shop here.

Mr. and Mrs. Al Warfel entertained the Claud Wild family at a goose dinner Tuesday evening. Mr. Wild is the owner of a large fruit orchard in Washington and is here on an extended visit.

Petit Jurors will report Monday at 10 a.m. in cicuit court here when the case of Lucille A.Burnette vs. E.F. Lawhorn, both of Lanark, complaint at law, is scheduled to be tried. The plantiff alleges in the complaint that the defendant on March 10, 1935, promised to marry her within a reasonable time. The complaint further sets out that since that date the defendant married another woman, which marriage occurred in the fall of 1938. Damages of $10,000 are asked by the plaintiff.

Clyde Butterbaugh marketed a drove of Steers from his farm near Lanark in the Tuesday trade at the Chicago Stock Yards last week. There were 46 head of 1055 pound averages and sold at $10.44 cwt.

(North Manchester Ind) - Byron Hawbecker a sophomore at Manchester College and the son of Rev. & Mrs. Merle Hawbecker of Lanark, has been given a certificate of full membership in Kappa Mu Epsilon national honorary mathematics society following the completion of a research paper, announced Prof. John Dotterer, head of the Department of Mathematics. The Manchester Chapter of this society was the first of its kind in Indiana established for under graduate students. A 1953 graduate of Lanark high school, Hawbecker is majoring in chemistry. He is currently active in the varsity band, Al Kimia, (chemistry club) and Chi Psi (math club).

Ed Queckboerner, a former Lanark area resident is a patient at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Madison, Wis.

George Jones returned Sunday from Sterling Community General Hospital, where he had recent surgery.

Mr. and Mrs. Harold Zentner spent a few days in Hickman Neb. with the Wes Shepard family the first of the week.

Mrs. William Wenzler and family of Milwaukee, Wis., are here for a visit with the former's mother, Mrs. Alma Rahn over the weekend.

Paul Diffenderfer was in Mt. Carroll on Friday.

Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Baum of Lena are the parents of a son born on Friday at Freeport Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Myrtle Baum of Lanark is the paternal great grandmother.

The Stanley Warfel family of the state of Indiana are visiting the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Warfel here during the weekend.

Mr. and Mrs. Byron Hawbecker and daughter Denise, of Ada, spent Thanksgiving with the former's parents Rev. and Mrs. Merle Hawbecker. They will visit Mrs. Hawbecker's parents at Carthage during part of the vacation period.

Miss Nancy Olson of Lanark wasa the guest of honor at a bridal shower held recently at the William J. Costello Jr., home north of Elizabeth. Hostesses were Mrs. Kenneth Hostman of Elgin and mary Ann Costello fo Elizabeth. Twenty guests were served refreshments. Miss Olson is the bride-elect of Kirk Hostman of Elizabeth they are planning an Aug. 5 wedding.

A post nuptial shower was given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Helms of Mt. Carroll in honor of Fern Rasmussen Vinson, who became the bride of Bruce Vinson of Morton Grove on June 19 (1976) at Lanark Trinity Lutheran Church. Mrs. Virginia Helms, Becky and Tina Rasmussen, were hostesses for the shower given Sunday afternoon June 27. The Helms home was beautifully decorateed with two mobiles of cranes made of Origami Streamers adorned the doorways and waterlilies and cranes decorated the lace-covered table. A minature bride and groom centerpiece and candles also added to the decor. Bridal games were played and Fern then opened her gifts. Refresments of cake, nuts, mints, punch and coffee were served. Guest attended from Morton Grove, Neponset, Mt. Carroll and Lanark.

The Rev. and James Medendorp and sons, Tim and Joel of Lanark returned from a two week vacation after visiting Niagara Falls, NY and touring Washington DC. In Madison NJ the Rev. Medendorp attended the General Synod of Reformed Churches in America, at the Fairleigh-Dickinson University. They also had the opportunity to attend a play on the history of the Reformed Church in America. The Reformed Church dates back to the 1600's and is the oldest continuing denomination in the United States.
