The settlers were Charles Hawes, T.
Hughes, John Hill, Jesse Hill, Clark Green,
George Green, and George Maider entered
the land from them, which caused the settlers to hold a large meeting in 1846. Many
were in favor of sending them across the
Mississippi River unless they would give up
the land. This they refused to do, and the
consequences were that Clark Green was
given thirty-three lashes with a raw-hide;
Bob Green had received eleven, when they
gave up the land. Maider gave up the land,
and was not whipped. But instead of giving up the land, they prosecuted the citizens
for riot, and many were fined. Old Centre
