On Wednsesday September 12, at the fair grounds the Lanark aggregation of ball tosser’s won from the Chadwick team a game complete with startling features.Chadwick came with the best lineup and a host of strong lunged rooters while Lanark was handicapped by the absence of several prominent players; Doty of Mount Carroll the team filling in on second base for our boys. However the recruits slugged the ball in veteran fashion when the hits were most needed and fielded in awe inspiring style. The Diamond was in awful shape and many errors were largely the result of the roughness of the infield.
Chadwick had a new pitcher on the firing line in Carbaugh and for six innings that young man held our boys down to four hits after which Lanark held a slug fest over his delivery and pounded out the winning runs. Wild on the Lanark side pitched his usual steady game and barring the fifth inning when the ball was wet and the support rather loose had the Chadwickians at his mercy.
The game opened well both sides getting a run in the first inning. Lanark was whitewashed in the next two innings but drew a tally in the fourth. Chadwick was lucky and poked a run in the second , but drew a blank in the third and in the fourth whanged out four hits and five runs . This was their finish from a scoring stand point and they never had luck after that it.In the sixth , Lanark , with the score 7 to 2 in Chadwicks favor shot three runs , duplicated in the seventh and clinched the job with another in the eighth . Dr. Matthews of Morrison, umpired, a first class game and the rooting though very fierce did not smack of the barbarian. The appended score shows the details of the game.
