JUNE PATRICIA (HUDDLESTON) ABAD
, age 85, of Savanna, Illinois, died Thursday, June 14, 2007 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, Iowa. A Grave Side Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 18, 2007. at Savanna Township Cemetery in Savanna with Deacon Cary Brock Chaplin of Genesis Hospice officiating. Memorials may be given to Genesis Hospice, 2535 Maple Crest Rd., Bettendorf, Iowa in Pat’s memory.
Pat was born on June 2, 1922, the daughter of Paul and Edna Huddleston in Somerset, Indiana. She attended the Jackson Park Hospital College of Nursing in Chicago, Illinois, graduating in 1940. Pat married Francis Louis Abad Sr. who passed away in 1948.
Pat was a Registered Nurse for forty-nine years. Pat worked for several years at the Savanna City Hospital. She also worked as the Savanna school nurse and for Doctor Turner and spent thirteen years working at Mercy Memorial Hospital in Aurora, Illinois. Pat was a member of the Women of the Moose and the Savanna VFW Auxiliary.
Pat enjoyed small animals and traveling.
Pat will be dearly missed by her son, Lou Abad of Denver, Colorado; a granddaughter, Heather Mist Abad of Yellowstone Nat. Park Wyoming; two nieces Pam Hindman and Cindy Anders of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and a nephew Paul B. Huddleston of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; and two cousins Wilma Pauley of Mt. Carroll and Marlene (Tommy) Smith of Savanna.
Pat was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one brother Paul F. Huddleston.
FREDERICK PAUL ABEL
, age 83, of Lake Carroll died Thursday, December 9, 2004 at FHN Hospital in Freeport. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 18, 2004 at the Lanark United Methodist Church in Lanark, with Pastor Katheryn Ling officiating. Visitations will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, December 17, at the Russell-Frank Funeral Home in Lanark. Memorials have been established in his memory for the American Cancer Society to the charity of your choice. Dr. Abel was born August 7, 1921 in Glendive, Montana, the son of Albert and Harriet (Thompson) Abel. He received his Bachelor's Degree from Winona State University and his Master's and doctorate from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He married Carrol DeWald on June 16, 1946 in Red Wing, Minnesota. Before retiring, he was the Dean of the College of Education at Western Illinois University in Macomb. He also was a professor of Educational Administration at Western. He was a member of the Lanark United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir and was a member of the Board of Trustees. He was a World War II Navy Veteran. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, NASSP, IASSP, NEA, and IEA. He also was a member of the Lake Carroll POA Board, and Lake Carroll Choral Singers. Dr. Abel will be missed by his wife, Carrol of Lake Carroll; one sister, Pauline Abel of LaCross, WI; his children, Richard (Joyce) Abel, Doug (Connie) Abel, Brian (Lynn) Abel, Kathy Abel, David (Tina) Abel, and Kris (Mike) Abel-Helwig; twenty grandchildren; and one great granddaughter. His parents precede Dr. Abel in death.
JOHN ACKER
, Friends from far and near gathered at the home of John Acker at Savanna Tuesday to pay their last earthly respects to the deceased. Funeral services were held from the home at 2 o'clock and from the St. Peter's Lutheran church at 2:30. The Rev. Gerhard Fisher had charge of the rites. Interment was made in the Savanna cemetery. Mr. Acker who was 63, passed away at his home in Savanna about 6 a.m. Sunday morning. The sound of his fall awakened his wife and daughter who rushed to the bath room and found him on the floor. They managed to revive him for a few seconds, but he passed away before a doctor arrived. Mr. Acker appeared to be in good health, Saturday night, as he visited with friends in Savanna. He arrived at his home soon after 10 and went to bed.
John Acker , 63, son of Conrad and Barbara Wacker Acker, was born Oct. 30, 1870 on a farm near Savanna. He spent his boyhood on the farm and when he was of age went to Savanna. In 1902 he was married to Emma H offman of Savanna. Mr. Acker was identified with the real estate business in Savanna for a number of years. First elected to the state house of representatives on Nov. 4, 1924, Rep. Acker on June 27 of this year ended his fifth consecutive term as representative of this district. He had long been an advocate of hard roads, and is credited with having secured appropriations for their construction throughout this part of the state. President of the Indian Jead trail between Peoria an dMinneapolis, Rep. Acker wielded considerable influence in having the highway pass through Savanna. He was a member of the Lutheran church here, B.P.O.E., L.O.O.M., K. of P., and other fraternal organizations. Surviving are his wife, daughter Clara, three sisters and one brother. They are Mrs. J.J. Heidt of LaFeria TX, Mrs. Lewis Getz and Mrs. William Boothby of near here, and William Acker of Carthage, S.D. Two half sisters and one half brother, Mrs. Robert Emery of Dixon, Miss Lena Notz and Albert Notz of near Savanna also survive. A daughter born in 1915, preceded him in death h aving died a few hours after her birht.
MABEL (ELLIOTT) ALBAN
- Final rites are being conducted this afternoon for Mrs. Frank Alban, 54, of Savanna, native of Mount Carroll, who died at 1:10 a.m. Tuesday, in Colonial hospital, Rochester, Minn. where she underwent a major operation four weeks ago. The services are being held at 1:30 p.m. in the Frank Funeral chapel here, with the Rev. R.H. Seitner, pastor of the Baptist church in charge. Burial will follow in Oak Hill cemetery. The former Mabel Elliott was born near Mt. Carroll, Oct. 21, 1887, the daughter of William and Jennie Elliott. She attended Mt. Carroll schools and awas graduated from Frances Shimer college. Since her marriage 30 years ago she had resided in Savanna. Surviving are her husband; three sisters, Mrs. Ernet Putnam and Mrs. Blaine L. Peck, both of Mount Carroll, and Mrs. Fred Holloway of Savanna; and a brother,Maj. Charles Elliott, Camp Livingston, La. Her parents and a brother preceededher in death.
ROBERT ALCORN
, 66, died 11:30 last Wednesday morning at his home in Savanna. He was the son of John and Mary Alcorn and was born near Casville, Wisc. April 6, 1870. He married Hattie Sigafus in Hanover in 1895 and soon after they came to Savanna where they have since made their home. Funeral services were held Friday morning from the home, with the Rev. R. J. Snywolt in charge. Burial was made in Savanna cemetery.
Mr. Alcorn is survived by his widow; a son Earl of Moline; one grand-daughter, and a brother, James Alcorn of Bowling Green , Mo.
H. MAE ALEXANDER
, 92, a resident of Freeport Manor Nursing Home, formerly of Kent and Chadwick, died Friday, June 4, 1993 at Freeport Memorial Hospital . She lived at Freeport Manor the past five years. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Kent and its women’s club. She was a past member of the Berean Circle of First Lutheran Church of Chadwick. Born April 4, 1901, in Fair Haven Township , she was a daughter of William and Emma (Adolph) Hartman. On August 14, 1921 she married Orion Alexander in Chadwick. He died June 17, 1981. Surviving are two daughters, Chrystal Tomman of Rockford and Margaret (Ernest) Brown of Winslow; one sister, Florence Turney of Rockford; three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Two brothers died previously. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home in Mount Carroll . The Rev. Milton L. Whitney of St. Paul Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Knoll Cemetery , Sterling . Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for St. Paul Lutheran Church .
LAVEDA (DURWOOD) ALEXANDER
, age 80, of rural Chadwick, died Friday, September 3, 2004 at the CGH Medical Center Dialysis Unit, Sterling.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 7 at the Fairhaven United Methodist Church, Fairhaven, with Pastor Dave Davies officiating. Burial was in the Chadwick Cemetery. Visitations were held from 58 p.m. Monday, September 6 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. A memorial fund has been established.
LeVeda was born October 1, 1923 in Hanley, Saskatchewan Canada, the daughter of Clifford and Ruby (Milnes) Durward. She was a graduate of the York Community High School with the class of 1941. She attended Shimer College in Mt. Carroll. LaVeda married Vernon L. Alexander January 26, 1946 in Thomson. He died September 10, 2000 in Sterling.
LaVeda was a homemaker most of her life. Her family was most important to her. She was called the "Family Historian." She was a member of the Fairhaven United Methodist Church, the Eastern Star, a Republican Women Past President, a 4-H Leader and served on the Carroll County Farm Bureau Women's Committee.
LaVeda is survived by three sons, Raymond (Barb), Keith (Camella) and Larry (Linda), all of Chadwick; a daughter, Karen (Dennis) Schriner of Lanark; thirteen grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; and a brother, Cliff (Norma) Durward of Thomson. Her husband, Vernon, two brothers and two sisters, precede LaVeda in death.
ORA L. ALEXANDER
, 67, of 510 S. Broad St., Lanark, died Saturday in his home. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Wheelock Allen Funeral Home with Rev. Sampson Harris, pastor of the Southern Baptsit Church of Rock Falls officiating. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Walkerville Cemetery in Walkerville with Rev. Lawrence Childers officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday.
Mr. Alexander was born on March 29, 1912 in Jerseyville, the son of Ora and Mary Sykes Alexander. He served in World War II in the Army. He had been employed at Parrish Alford with thirty years of service prior to his retirement. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ernest (Mary) R. Smith and Mrs. Steven (Daisy B.) Pence, both of Rock Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers.
JOHN H. ALLEMONG
, a son of Samuel H. and Margaret Allemong, was born in Charleston, Jefferson County, Va., July 28, 1830, and died at Indianapolis, Ind., April 28, 1905, aged 74 years and 9 mos.
John H. Allemong was one of Lanark's pioneer business men, engaging in the drug business when the town first started, and continuing in the same until stricken with paralysis about ten years ago. Since that time he has been cared for by his brother, Rev. Allemong and family, who came to Lanark in 1895, and after remaining here five years moved to Indiana.
FRANCES SECELIA (BENTLEY) ALSIP
, was born May 7, 1877 at Milledgeville, Ill., and died Wednesday, August 31, 1904 at the age of twenty-seven years, three months and twenty-four days.
She was married to Millard S. Alsip, August 3, 1895. To this union were born three children, Harold Leroy, John and Irene Lecra.
She leaves to mourn the loss, her husband, three children, her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. John Bentley of Milledgeville, Ill., and nine brothers and sisters, Clarence C. of Polo, Ill., William of Azusa, California., Alton of Reed City, Michigan and Sarah A. of Morrison, Ill., George W. of Freeport, Ill., James E. of Chicago, Ill., Henry H. of Morrison, Ill., Carrie W. Stowe of Morrison, Ill., and Horace H. of Rock Falls, Ill. There wer eight brothers and sisters who proceeded her in death.
The funeral services were held at the house Friday afternoon at two o'clock and were conducted by Rev. J. W. McKitrick of the M. E. church, who took for his text Isaiah 40.6.8. A large congregation of sorrowing friends met to pay their last respects to a beloved sister, neighbor and friend.
May beautiful floral offerings were given as a token of friendship and love for the departed. A very pretty floral design was tendered by the High School Alumni as a last expression of love for one of their number.
The deceased was a consistent member of the M. E. church. She was also a member of the W. R. ___ and Royal Neighbors, who like wise mourn the loss of one of their number.
Music was furnished by Charley Johston, Wallace Fike, Mrs. Ray Freas and Miss Hazel Goldthorpe.
The pallbearers were Messrs. H. E. and Wallace Fike, H. D. Bills, M. R. Bernheisel, R. W. Durstine and Frank Muller.
The remains were laid to rest in the Bethel cemetery south of town there to wait the resurrection morn.
ANNA ARTMAN
, 75, wife of James B. Artman of 1135 South Oak avenue, died at a Freeport hospital yesterday after an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at the Walker Mortuary, west Main street, at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Rev. Anthony P. Landgraf, pastor of Second Presbyterian church, will conduct the services. Interment will be made in German Baptist cemetery, Shannon. The daughter of Peter and Christiana Rayhorn, she was born July 20, 1873, in Kylertown, Pa. Her marriage to James B. Artman took place May 15, 1913. Besides her husband she leaves one son, Ray A. Artman, and one grandson, both of Freeport. Two step-sons also survive, Frank and Clyde Artman, Freeport. Two brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.
RWLAND C. ARTMAN
, a retired Shannon farmer, died Friday night, Feb 21, 1969, in Freeport Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. Mr. Artman, a member of Bethel United Methodist Church here, was born Aug. 18,
1900, in Shannon, son of Arthur and Mae (White) Artman. On Dec. 14, 1922, he married VerDena Daniels, in Shannon. Surviving are his widow; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Dorothy) Wubbena and Mrs. Marvin (Florence) Thede, both of Shannon; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a brother, Francis of Shannon.
Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday in Scharman Funeral Home here. The Rev. James Allen, pastor of Bethel United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in
the Brethren Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. A memorial fund for the church has been established.
VAN DENA "VERNIE" ARTMAN
, 92, of Shannon, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1993, at Villas of Shannon Nursing Home.
Retiring from farming in the Shannon area in 1961, she and her husband moved to Shannon. A 1919 graduate of Shannon High School, she taught school in the Shannon area for several years.
She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and its Missionary Circle, Shannon Women’s Club and Senior Citizens group. Born March 22, 1900, in Forreston Township, she was a daughter of Jacob and Anna
(Tempel) Daniels. She married Roland Artman, Dec. 14, 1922, in Shannon. He died 1969. Surviving are two daughters, Dorothy (Robert) Wubbena of Shannon and Florence (Marvin) Thede of Freeport.; one sister, Sylvia Duitsman Henze of Pine Crest Manor, Mount Morris; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Four sisters also preceded her in death.
The funeral was held Tuesday March 2, at Bethel United Methodist Church in Shannon with the Rev. Larry Thomson officiating. Burial was in Brethren Cemetery in Shannon.
ARCH ATHERTON
- Funeral services were held for Arch Atherton, 79, Thomson, Wednesday afternoon in the Fay Funeral home in Fulton. Mr. Atherton died Monday, December 16, 1957 in Mercy Hospital, Clinton, Iowa after a long illness.
He was born August 26, 1878, in York Township, to Lucius and Helen (Balcolm) Atherton. He married Dolly Griswold August 11, 1903 in Thomson. Mr. Atherton farmed all his life until 14 years ago when they moved to Thomson to operate the pool hall. He was educated in Carroll County schools.
Surviving are his wife, five daughters, Mrs. Leman Swett of Forreston, Mrs. Cecil Mitchell of Thomson, Mrs. Helen Vance of DeWitt, Iowa, Mrs. Leo Linder of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mrs. Harold Tomman of Savanna; two sons, Merl and Dwight, both of Thomson; 27 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter.
CARRIE ATHERTON
, 86, died at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 3, 1956 in the home of her daughter, Mrs. William Hans, of the Ideal community south of Mount Carroll. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the Frank Funeral Home. Rev. Eldon Schryver of the Evangelical U. B. church in Chadwick officiated and burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Mount Carroll.
The former Carrie Rush was born October 16, 1869, the daughter of James and Anna (Bailey) Rush in Pennsylvania and was married February 5, 1891 to Olice Atherton, who died October 25, 1938. (This marriage date may be wrong; the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index, 1763-1900 shows it as February 5, 1889.)
Surviving are the daughter Mrs. Hans; two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Thomas Rush of Mount Carroll and Frank Rush of Morrison, and one sister, MRs. Fred Noble of Yakima, Washington.
DANIEL F. ATHERTON
, 96, died Wednesday evening, October 17, 1951 of last week in the Lahey nursing home in Thomson. Services were held Saturday in the Frank Funeral Home with burial in Lanark Cemetery. Surviving are the widow, four daughters, including Mrs. Lillian Garner of Lanark; two sons Robert and John of Lanark, 18 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.
DAVID M. ATHERTON
, 44, of Clinton, IA died Sunday, December 28, 2008 at his home.
David was born on October 31, 1964 in Morrison, IL to Larry and Joan (Titus) Atherton. He attended Thomson grade schools and graduated from Thomson High School in 1983. David had Advanced Individual Training in Maryland while serving for 8 years in the U.S. Army Reserves in Freeport, IL. He has worked in various trades in the Clinton, IA area. David had a big heart for children and animals. He dearly loved his cats Susie Q and Jenny. He took pride in his gardening and cooking skills and had great compassion for others. David was always quick to lend a hand.
Survivors include his parents, Larry and Joan Atherton of Thomson, IL; one sister, Lori (John) Crippen of Colona, IL; one brother, Dan (Tina) Atherton of Chillicothe, IL; three nieces, Stephanie, Rachel and Blair; one nephew, Andrew; and many aunts, uncles and friends.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, George and Helen Titus; and his paternal grandparents, Merle and Ihla Atherton. Buried at Lower York Cemetery.
DOAD ATHERTON
- Relatives and friends received word Sunday that Dr. Doad C. Atherton of Hollywood, Calif had passed away Saturday. Funeral services were held Monday with interment at that place. While no definite word has been received regarding the deceased, we can quote the following.
Mr. Atherton was raised in the Thomson community and lived here for many years. He was a brother of Mrs. Edwin Williams, a brother-in-law to Mrs. Charles Geisinger. His wife was formerly Miss Belle Alexander of Thomson. A brother, Arch Atherton, partner in the Atherton and Stagg general store at Thomson for many years, passed away in 1914.
Doad was a most likeable fellow and had many friends. He studied Osteopathy at the Kirksville, Missouri school, graduating from that place in 1907. He practiced for several years at Chanute, Kansas and moved on to Hollywood about fifteen years ago. He was about 62 years of age. We expect to have a complete obituary for next week’s paper.

DOLLY S. (GRISWOLD) ATHERTON
, 83, passed away at 4:30 a.m. today (Thursday) July 1, 1965 in her home at Thomson. The body was taken to the Fay Funeral Home in Fulton, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, with burial following in the Lower York Cemetery at Thomson. Friends may call after 7 p.m. on Friday.
Dolly Griswold was born July 18, 1881 in Thomson, the daughter of George and Roseanna (Shoemaker) Griswold. She was educated in the Thomson schools and was married on August 11, 1903 in Thomson to Arch Atherton. The couple farmed in the Thomson area for a number of years, later moving into town there operating a pool hall, and was a bulk oil distributor. He passed away on December 16, 1957. She was a member of the York Community Church.
Survivors include two sons, Merle and Dwight of Thomson; five daughters, Mrs. Leaman (Lena) Swett, Mrs. Leila Mitchell, and Mrs. Harold (Arlene) Tomman, all of Thomson; Mrs. Helen Vance of Charlotte, Iowa; Mrs. Leo (Pearl) Linder of Minneapolis, Minnesota; 24 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one daughter, one son, three sisters, and four brothers.
DWIGHT L. ATHERTON
- The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Fulton Chapel, Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home for Dwight L. Atherton, 77, of 340 W. Franklin Street. He died Sunday at the Morton Plant Hospital, Clearwater, Florida. The Rev. Rod Dye, pastor of Lanark United Methodist Church, will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lower York Cemetery, Thomson, Illinois where military rites will be accorded. Pallbearers will be Keith and Blake Atherton, Donald J. Green, Merrill, Shane, and Quincy Green. Honorary pallbearers will be Andrea, Tammy and Michelle Atherton, Diana Kradle, Lois Stoddard, and Christina Green.
He was born August 1, 1921 in Thomson, Illinois to Arch and Dolly (Griswold) Atherton. He married Lois J. Linder on April 14, 1946 in San Francisco. (Alice Horner’s note: An account of his 25th wedding anniversary in the April 22, 1971 Mirror Democrat gives this date as April 24, 1946.) She died September 16, 1985. He later married Lucile Dresbah-Karrow on August 1, 1986 in Nassua.
He served six years in the United States Navy in the South Pacific and three months under Adm. Richard Byrd at the South Pole. He was employed for 26 years as a guard and boiler maintenance with the Savanna Army Depot, retiring in 1975. After retirement he was employed with Determan’s. He was a member of the American Legion, Thomson, and the Loyal Order of the Moose, Savanna, Illinois Lodge.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Barbara (Andrew) Curl of Hanover, Illinois; two sons, Donald D. Atherton of Savanna, Illinois and Charles L. Atherton of Thomson; a step-daughter, Kandis Melton of Rockford, Illinois; 12 grandchilodren; seven great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren, and three step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by six sisters and a brother.
ED ATHERTON
, 61, died suddenly at his home in Thomson Wednesday afternoon, March 24, 1937. He had been in poor health since suffering a stroke a few years ago. His death was unexpected however, as he had been feeling somewhat better in the last few days. He had been sitting in a chair for a time Wednesday afternoon but decided to lie down. He arose and started to walk to a davenport close by, but fell dead before reaching it.
Edward Atherton, son of Lucius and Helen (Balcom) Atherton was born March 14, 1876 at Argo-Fa and passed away at the age of 61 years and 10 days, having spent his entire life in this community. He was married to Mrs. Eva Whitney Groharing on August 1, 1912, and to their union one daughter Lorraine was born.
Surviving him are his wife and daughter, Mrs. Robert Holland, a step-daughter Mrs. Fawn Strubb, a step-son, Wayne Groharing, two sisters, Mrs. George (Nora) Mort and Mrs. Will (Bertha) Bennett, a brother Arch Atherton, and two half-sisters, Mrs. Ella Mowry of Mount Carroll and Mrs. Winnie Hurlbert of Fulton. He was preceded in death by a brother, Vet Atherton, a step-son Kyle Groharing, and two half-sisters, Mrs. Vida Phillips, and Mrs. May McGinnis, and his parents.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon March 27 at the home and at 2:30 in the Christian Church; Rev. T. Stuart Claworth of Savanna will officiate. Pallbearers will be Don Hall, Frank Leavens, Ely Cochran, Vern Williams, Bayard Lewis and Karl Orcutt.
ELIZABETH ATHERTON
, 56, of Loves Park, died Tuesday morning, April 7, 1953 in Elgin. She was born in Thomson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Atherton and lived in Loves Park the last five years. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Surviving are her mother, Mrs. Emma Atherton, Warren; three sisters, Ena Wentz of Harvey; Mrs. Cora Anderson of Loves Park; and Mrs. Lillian Garner, of Lanark; and two brothers, Robert of Galena and John R. of Lanark.

EMMA (JACOBS) ATHERTON
, 98, of Lanark, died last Friday morning, October 25, 1957 in a Warren nursing home. Born February 3, 1859 in Carroll County, daughter of William and Elizabeth (Jackson) Jacobs, she married Dan Atherton, who died in 1951.
She is survived by two sons, John of Lanark and Robert of Galena; and three daughters, Mrs. Ena Wentz of Chicago, Mrs. Cora Anderson of Loves Park, and Mrs. James (Lillian) Garner of Lanark.
EVA D. (WHITNEY) ATHERTON
, 85, of Thomson died at 5:40 Monday, July 19, 1965 at Savanna City Hospital where she had been a patient four weeks. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Fay Funeral Home with Rev. T. S. Cleworth of the York Community Church officiating. The organist was Mrs. Emil Brach and the soloist was Philip Brach.
Flowers were in charge of Mrs. Edward Andring and Mrs. Harold Witt. Casket bearers were Edward Andring, William Cronister, Robert Lewis, Mervin Marshall, Donald Hall, and Harold Witt. Burial was in Lower York Cemetery, Thomson.
Eva Whitney was born August 4, 1879 in Thomson, the daughter of Jasper and Sarah (Alden) Whitney. She married William Groharing on July 8, 1903 in Thomson. He died March 13, 1909, and she married Edwin Atherton on August 1, 1912. He died on March 24, 1937. She attended the York Community church and since December 1963 had lived in the Caroline Mark rest home, Mount Carroll.
She is survived by one son, Wayne Groharing of Thomson, 2 daughters, Mrs. Faun Strubb of Mount Carroll, and Mrs. Robert (Lorraine) Holland of Thomson; four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, a son Kyle Groharing, who died March 15, 1930, four sisters and a brother.
HAROLD D. ATHERTON
, 78, of Savanna died Thursday June 20, 1996 at Freeport Memorial Hospital. He worked as a machinist most of his adult life and was employed by the Eaton Corp. in Savanna and Hanover, retiring in 1984. He was a member of the Community United Church of Christ in Savanna, the Masonic Lodge, Mississippi Lodge 385 of Savanna, as well as the Freeport Consistory, Tebala Temple of the Shrine in Rockford, and Savanna Moose Lodge 1095. He enjoyed his children and all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and also liked to use his machinist skills to build things better.
Mr. Atherton was born October 14, 1917 in Mount Carroll Township, rural Mount Carroll, to Robert and Wavey (Sisler) Atherton. He married Lena Strubb October 3, 1940 in Clinton, Iowa. She died August 6, 1994 in Clinton.
Survivors include one daughter, Suzanne Atherton of Savanna; one son, Harold (Sharon) Atherton Jr. of Savanna; one brother, James Atherton of Mount Carroll; seven sisters, Mary Gaul and Clara Besemeier, both of Freeport, Irma Crofton of Sterling, Wilma Weber of Shannon, Bernadine Stanbury of Champaign, and Charlotte Blake and Emma Hannabarger, both of California; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother.
A memorial service was held Monday at the Community United Church of Christ in Savanna with Rev. Lucille Fritz officiating. Inurnment was in Lower York Cemetery, Thomson. Memorials may be made in his name.
JOHN C. ATHERTON
, 70, of Thomson, died Friday, February 3, at Samaritan Hospital North in Clinton, Iowa. He worked for Agri King Inc. in Fulton as a process technician until retiring in 1990. He was a member of the Thomson American Legion, Ducks Unlimited, a past member of the Savanna Moose and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. army in North Africa, Anzion and the Italian Campaign,. He enjoyed gardening, canning, cooking, hunting, fishing, and golf.
Mr. Atherton was born August 23, 1924 in Lanark to Robert and Wavie (Sisler) Atherton. Survivors include two sons, Ron (Charlotte) Atherton of Thomson and Col. Mike Atherton, both of Thomson; one daughter, Mrs. Mick (Bonnie) Dyson of Savanna; three grandsons; two brothers, Harold Atherton of Savanna and James (Julia) Atherton of Mount Carroll; seven sisters, Mary Gaul of Freeport and Mrs. Allen (Claire) Biesemeier of Freeport, Irma Crofton of Sterling, Mrs. Brett (Charlotte) Black of Fresno, California, Mrs. Don (Emma) Hannabarger of LaJolla, California, Mrs. Dick (Bernadine) Stanberry of Champaign, and Mrs. Dick (Wilma) Weber of Shannon; and one sister-in-law, Iva Atherton of Lanark. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.
Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Law – Jones Funeral Home in Savanna with Rev. Lucille Fritz of the Community United Church of Christ in Savanna officiating. Burial will be in Rock Island National Cemetery where military rites will be accorded by the Thomson American Legion. A memorial fund has been established in his name for the Thomson Youth Baseball Association.
LENA E. ATHERTON
, 72, of Savanna died Saturday, August 6, 1994 at Samaritan North. (Alice Horner’s note: Samaritan North was in Clinton, Clinton County, Iowa.) A memorial service will be 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Community United Church of Christ in Savanna, with the Rev. Lucille Fritz officiating. There will be no visitation. Inurnment will be at the Lower York Cemetery in Thomson.
Mrs. Atherton was born June 9, 1922 in Thomson, to William and Fawn Mae (Whitney) Strubb. She married Harold Atherton October 3, 1940 in Clinton. She was a graduate of the Thomson Public Schools. In addition to being a homemaker, she worked as a librarian at the Savanna Library and as city clerk in Savanna. She had also worked at Johnson’s Drug Store in Savanna.
She was a member of Community United Church, Savanna, the Women’s Fellowship, and the card club at the church. She had been a member of the You and I Club of Savanna, and the Republican Women’s Club. She was active with her church and enjoyed cooking and reading books.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Suzanne Atherton of Savanna; a son, Harold Jr. of Savanna; two sister, Mrs. Kyle (Ruth) Brown of Thomson, and Mrs. Norma Kradle of Mount Carroll; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter and two nephews.
MERLE L. ATHERTON
, 71, of Route 2, Thomson died Saturday September 20, 1986 in Mercy Hospital, Clinton, Iowa. A funeral was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Fulton Chapel, Bosma Funeral Home, with the Rev. Romir Esguerra, United Methodist Church, Thomson officiating. Burial was in Lower York Cemetery, Thomson.
He was born July 20, 1915 in Thomson to Arch and Dolly (Griswold) Atherton. He married Ihla Elaine Jones November 18, 1933 in Lanark. She died October 14, 1984. He owned and operated Atherton Service Station, Thomson, from 1943 until his retirement in 1976. He was a member of Loyal Order of Moose No. 363, Clinton, Iowa, and a life-long resident of Thomson.
Survivors include four sons, Merle Jr., Richard, and Larry, all of Thomson, and Robert of Morrison; 13 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Leo (Pearl) Linder of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, and a brother Dwight, of Lanark. He was preceded in death by five sisters. A memorial has been established.
MICHAEL J. ATHERTON
, 51, Savanna, died Sunday at his home. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Savanna with the Rev. Jim Deckert officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Savanna, and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in the Lower York Cemetery in Thomson, Illinois. The Savanna Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, the Savanna American Legion and the Thomson American Legion will accord full military rites.
He was born December 2, 1949 in Savanna to John C. and Lila J. (Curley) Atherton. On December 20, 1998 he married
Bev Reynolds Floyd in Savanna at the Community United Church of Christ. He graduated from Thomson High School in 1968 and from the University of Illinois in 1972 with a degree in agricultural communications. He received a master’s degree in military science from the Air Command General Staff College in June 1987.
He served in the U. S. Air Force from June 1972 until retiring as a colonel in February 1995. He served his country in the Vietnam War and the Persian Gulf War. His tours of duty included: pilot training at Williams Air Force Base (AFB) in Phoenix, Arizona; A-7 training at Davis Monthan AFB, Tucson, Arizona; A-7 service and rescue, England AFB, Alexandria, Louisiana; Third Tactical A-7 Fighter Wing, Korat AFB, Thailand; 23rd Tactical Air Support Squadron, Bergstrom AFB, Austin, Texas; 27th Tactical Air Support, Davis Monthan AFB; A-10 instructor pilot for 358th Tactical Fighter Training, Davis Monthan AFB; 12th Air Force Standards and Evaluation Team, Bergstrom AFB; executive officer to Air Division Command and A-10 instructor pilot for 357th Tactical Fighter Training Squadron at Davis Monthan AFB; 846th Air Division executive officer at Davis Monthan AFB; 333rd Tactical Fighter Training Squadron assistant operations officer at Davis Monthan AFB; Air Command General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; Pentagon, Washington, D. C.; 76th Tactical Fighter Squadron commander, England, AFB; 51st Fighter Wing deputy commander at Osan AFB, Korea; and Third Operations Group commander, Headquarters, Fort Hood Texas.
He was a member of the Community United Church of Christ, the Savanna VFW Post, the Savanna American Legion, past commander of the Thomson American Legion and the Savanna Rotary Club.
Survivors include his wife; his mother, Mrs. Lila (Wayne) Ritchie of Savanna; two sons, Chad and Todd Atherton of Yorktown, Virginia; the mother of his sons, Mrs. Rita (Snyder) Atherton of Yorktown; two step-daughters, Julia Floyd of Savanna and Jennifer Floyd of Lancaster, Ohio; a step-son, Burton Floyd of Mackinaw, Illinois; a sister, Mrs. Bonnie (Mick) Dyson of Savanna; a brother, Ron Atherton of Thomson, and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.
OLICE M. ATHERTON
- Funeral services for Olice M. Atherton, 71-year-old York Township farmer, died in Mount Carroll Tuesday afternoon October 25, 1938, will be held Thursday at 2 o’clock from Frank Funeral chapel in Mount Carroll. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery, Mount Carroll.
Mr. Atherton died suddenly about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday as he was about to return to his home near Ideal after spending the day working on a house which he owned in Mount Carroll. His brother-in-law Thomas Rush, who had been assisting him said that they had just stopped work and started toward their car when Mr. Rush, who in the lead, heard his companion fall. Hastening to his side, he found Mr. Atherton apparently dead. A physician was summoned and after examination said that Mr. Atherton seemed ato have died instantly, presumably from heart attack. Members of the family said that Mr. Atherton had apparently been feeling as well as usual in the last few days and had not complained of any trouble.
Mr. Atherton was born July 19, 1867 on the farm just north of Ideal and continued to reside there till the time of his death. He was the son of Sylvanus and Eugenia (Marshall) Atherton. On February 5, 1889 he was united in marriage to Miss Carrabel Rush and they engaged in farming on the home place. To this union were born two children, a son who died in infancy and a daughter, Mrs. William Hans of Ideal.
Surviving are his widow and his daughter, two grandchildren, and a sister Mrs. George Beck, Mount Carroll, and Mrs. Roy I. Houghton of Thomson, also several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and a son.
ROBERT F. ATHERTON
, of Lanark died about 1 a.m. Tuesday, April 29, 1958 in a Galena nursing home. He was born March 17, 1889 in Thomson, the son of Daniel and Emma (Jacobs) Atherton. On November 28, 1912 he married Wavie Sisler in Mount Carroll.
Surviving are his wife; four sons, Robert of Shannon, Harold of Savanna, John of Chadwick, and James of Baldwin Park, California; eight daughters, Mrs. Mary Gaul of Cedarville, Mrs. Arthur (Irma) Crofton of Sterling, Mrs. Edmund (Jeanette) McFadden of Lanark, Mrs. Allen (Claire) Biesemeier of Lena, Mrs. Charlotte Waddelow of Covina, California; Mrs. Donna (Emma) Hannabarger of Northville, Michigan, Mrs. Richard (Bernardine) Stanbery of Tuscola, Illinois, and Mrs. Richard (Wilma) Weber of Shannon; one brother, John of Lanark; three sisters, Mrs. J. M. Garner of Lanark, Mrs. Cora Anderson of Loves Park, and Mrs. Ena Wentz of Harvey, Illinois. One sister preceded him in death.
Atherton was a member of the Lanark Brethren Church. Funeral service will be Friday at 2 p.m. in the Frank Funeral Home with the Rev. Herbert Edwards, pastor of the Coleta Evangelical United Brethren Church, officiating. Burial will be in Lanark Cemetery.
ROBERT E. ATHERTON
- A Lanark man, Robert E. Atherton, 65, of 114 W. Pearl Street, was killed Tuesday afternoon, May 8, 1979 while at work at the Wood Brothers factory in Oregon. It was reported Atherton was at work in a storage area when a stack of mower attachments fell on top of him. It is not known what caused the accident but it was thought perhaps the wind from an open doorway had contributed to the accident. Atherton was taken by ambulance to KSB Hospital in Dixon, where he was pronounced dead on arrival from severe back and head injuries. The death is under investigation by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration.
Born on August 21, 1913 in Carroll County, he was the son of Robert and Wavie (Sisler) Atherton. He married Iva Eickert in Nashua, Iowa on December 27, 1940. He was a retired farmer, having farmed in the Shannon area for the past 20 years before moving to Lanark about 5 ½ years ago.
Surviving are his wife; one son Ellis Atherton of Shannon; one daughter, Mrs. Donald (Karen) Munz of Freeport; five grandchildren, eight sisters: Mrs. May Gaul and Mrs. Allen (Claire) Biesemeier of Freeport; Mrs. Arthur (Irma) Crofton of Sterling, Mrs. Edmund (Jeanette) McFadden of Lanark, Mrs. Brett (Charlotte) Black of Citrus Heights, California, Mrs. Donald (Emma) Hanabarger of Venezuela, Mrs. Richard (Bernadine) Stanberry of Champaign and Mrs. Richard (Wilma) Weber of Thomson; three brothers, Harold Atherton of Savanna, John Atherton of Thomson, and James Atherton of Forrest Hill, California.
Funeral service was conducted at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Frank Funeral Home, Lanark, with the Rev. Robert Hartman, former pastor of Bethel United Methodist Church, Shannon officiating. Burial was in Oak Knoll Cemetery, Sterling.
SUSAN (SITES) ATHERTON
, 89, of Lanark died Tuesday evening July 16, 1974 at Memorial Hospital in Freeport following an extended illness. The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Frank Funeral Home in Lanark, with the Rev. Albert Rogers of Lanark Church of the Brethren officiating. Burial will be in the Lanark Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
Susan Cornelia Sites was born February 25, 1885 in Hagerstown, Maryland, the daughter of James and Laura (Kuhnes) Sites. She married John Atherton in Lanark on July 27, 1924. She had been a grade school teacher in Lanark. Survivors include her husband, and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one sister and six brothers.
WAVIE FLOETTE (SISLER) ATHERTON
- Funeral service was held Sunday afternoon in the Frank Funeral Home, Lanark, for Mrs. Robert (Wavie Floette) Atherton, 85, Shannon, who died early Friday morning, August 25, 1978 in Freeport Memorial Hospital. The Rev. Nathan Williams, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Sterling, officiated. Burial was in the Lanark Cemetery.
She was born May 6, 1893 in Carroll County, the daughter of Dorsey and Mary (Orr) Sisler. She married Robert Atherton November 28, 1912 in Mount Carroll. She was a member of the Lanark Church of the Brethren.
Survivors are four sons, Robert of Lanark, Harold of Savanna, John C. of Thomson and James of Forest Hills, Calif.; eight daughters, Mary Gaul and Mrs. Allen (Claire) Biesemeier of Freeport, Mrs. Arthur (Irma) Crofton of Sterling, Mrs. Edmund (Jeanette) McFadden of Lanark, Mrs. Brett (Charlotte) Black of Citrus Heights, Calif., Mrs. Donald (Emma) Hannabarger of San Paulo, Brazil, Mrs. Richard (Bernadine) Stansberry of Champaign, and Mrs. Richard (Wilma) Weber of Shannon; 25 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren, eight step-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ellis Sisler of Fort Morgan, Colorado, Charles Sisler of Mount Carroll, and John Wayne Sisler of North Pekin; and two sisters, Mrs. Howard (Ethel) Pauley and Mrs. Theodore (Ora) Randecker, both of Mount Carroll. She was preceded in death by her husband, six sisters, a brother and a great-grandchild.
A memorial fund has been established for the Lanark Church of the Brethren.
JOHN E. ATKINS
, age 61, of Thomson, Illinois, died Saturday, January 10, 2009 at home. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Savanna, Illinois, Pastor Ron Abbott will officiate. Cremation Rites will be accorded. Visitation will be held 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at the funeral home.
John was born on June 28, 1947, the son of Kenneth Leroy and Alma Jean (Cowden) Atkins, in Savanna, Illinois. He attended Thomson School. John married Pat Foster on May 29, 1980 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He enjoyed bowling, gambling at the riverboat casinos, fishing, restoring cars, and his motorcycles. Most of all John loved his family.
John is survived by his wife, Pat Atkins of Thomson; three sons, Richard (Kimberley Wurster) Atkins of Thomson, Wayne Atkins of Thomson, John Atkins of Thomson; three daughters, Denise (John) Abildgaard, Joni (Jacob) Qualls of Clinton, Iowa, Marie (Jeremy Story) Atkins of Thomson; thirteen grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; mother, Alma Jean of Strong City, Kansas; brother David Shelton of Strong City, Kansas; two sisters, April Pike of Oklahoma, Gloria (James) Skaggs of Arizona.
John is preceded in death by his father, Kenneth and a grandson Jason.
FRANCIS AUGUSTUS
, son of Jacob and Henrietta Greenawalt, was born in Franklin county, Pa. Dec. 8, 1854, and died at Lanark, Ill., Sept. 23, 1936, at the age of 81 years, 9 months and 15 days. He was married to Anna Mary Teeter on November 25, 1880, his wife surviving him. To this union were born five children, one, George Porter, dying in infancy. Those surviving are Roy and Otho of Lanark; Harry, of Dubuque, Ia.; and Percy, of Des Moines, Ia. The deceased was a member of a large family. Mrs. Kate Bricker, Mrs. Rebecca Glaser, Miss Sadie Greenawalt and Jacob, of Lemasters, Pa., are deceased. The living are George, of Lemasters, Pa.; Mrs. Laura Kreps, of Mercersburg, Pa.; and Robert and William of Lemasters, a. Mr. Greenawalt became a member of the Brethren church in 1890, being baptized by Elder Z. T. Livengood in the Bethlehem congregation near Milledgeville, which has since been moved. For many years he has been a faithful and loyal officer of the First Brethren church in Lanark. After holding other offices for years, he was ordained deacon on January 11, 1913, remaining a senior deacon till the time of his death. He engaged in various civic activities in his modest way, having served as school director and assessor at various times. At his death he was a director of the exchange State Bank. His life as a citizen and as a Christian was exemplary. He trod the ways of life with a calm and steadfast purpose and with a spirit of endurance which endeared him to a host of friends and acquaintances. On such pillars both church and state rest perpetually.
LUCILLE (LOTZ) AVERY
, age 91, of Savanna, Illinois, died Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center, Clinton, Iowa. It was Lucille's wish to donate her body to the University of Northern Illinois for medical research. A Memorial Service will be held on a later date when inurnment takes place at Lanark Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established in her memory, to the Trinity Lutheran Church, Lanark, Ilinois.
Lucille was born December 11, 1916 on a farm near Lanark, Illinois to William and Emma (Schleuning) Lotz. She graduated from Lanark High School with the class of 1934. In 1963 she married Hubert (Hugh) Avery. He died January 19, 2003.
Lucille was employed for many years at Champion Dry Goods in Lanark. She was a life long member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lanark and a member of Savanna Women of the Moose, Savanna. Lucille enjoyed her family, church, friends, crafts, cards, bingo, bowling and camping.
Lucille will be dearly missed by one daughter, Dolores Lamoreux of Lawrenceville, Georgia; a son-in-law Richard (Margaret) McLaughlin of Minooka, Illinois; two granddaughters, two grandsons, one great grandson, two great granddaughters, a sister in-law, June Henning of Eustis, Florida, and many nieces and nephews.
ETHEL (MOORE) AVES
, of Savanna died Wednesday, January 28, 1976 in Villas of Shannon Nursing Home. Born December 3, 1886 in Mount Carroll, she was the daughter of William and Nora (Weidman) Moore. The only immediate survivors are two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1957 and also a son and a grandchild.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Law-Jones Funeral Home here. The Rev. David Williams, pastor of Savanna Community United Church of Christ, will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Mount Carroll. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
ELIZA A. (GRAHAM) WILLIAMS AYERS
, was born in Little Falls, Herkermer County, New York, Jan. 15th 1819 and died at Milledgeville, Ill., Tuesday evening Jan., 17, 1893, at the age of seventy four years and two days. Her early years were spent in her native State, in her young womanhood she was married to Mr. Samuel Williams, of Little Falls, New York. After living a number of years in New York, they moved West to Illinois and settled in Milledgeville in 1858, three years after coming to Milledgeville her husband died leaving her a lone widow without any children. Several years later Mrs. Williams married Mr. Michael Ayers with whom she moved to Eagle Point, where they lived until 1868 when they emigrated to Independence, Buchannan County, Iowa. After twenty years of wedded life, Mr. Ayers died in 1884, leaving Mrs. Ayers again a widow, since that time she has made her home with Mrs. J. L. Cross her step daughter and her nephew Anson Souls, near INdependence, Iowa. In October last Mrs. Ayers came to Whiteside county, Ill., to visit Mrs. Harman Barthel who had sent for her to come and comfort her in deep affliction over the death of her son who had been killed in a railroad accident at Amboy, Ill. After spending several weeks with her friend, Mrs. Ayers came to Milledgeville, to visit her sister, Mrs. Naaman Spencer.
