MATILDA (SMITH) EMRICK , departed this life after a lingering illness at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lewis Fager in Polo Sunday, April 12, 1908, at the age of 81 years, 7 months and 7 days. Hers was a long and well spent life and she passed away at peace with her God. Mrs. Emrick was born September 5, 1826, in Northumberland county, Pennsylvania, January 19, 1843, she married John Emrick who passed to his eternal rest about twelve years ago. About three years after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Emrick decided to come west and in company with a number of families from their native state among whom were the Becks, Pauls and Michaels, they left Pennsylvania for the west. They came by steamer via the Ohio and Mississippi rivers to Savanna, Illinois, and from thence by team to Brookville where they established their home. Mother Emrick is one of the last, if not the last, of that little company who braved the hardships of pioneer life to found a home in the west. The descendants still remaining are reminded by her departure of the relentless depredations of the on rolling years, upon the rank and file of humanity. Mother Emrick was among those men and women who pave the way for the prosperity and comfort which the present generation enjoys and her memory should be held sacred for the work which she did. She lived to a ripe old age and into so many years came many events and experiences. She lived a quiet life; her heart was in her home and she sought for the best for her children. Those among whom she spent the greater part of her life honor her memory for the quiet unassuming life which she led, never seeking prominence in any way but doing the duties that came to her. After her husband's death, Mrs. Emrick continued to reside in their home at Brookville until the infirmities of age made it necessary for her to leave. Since then she has been living with her children, chiefly with Mrs. Fager. She leaves to mourn her death four daughter, Mrs. Peter Boddiger, Mrs. Wm. Shafer and Mrs. Lewis Fager of Polo and Mrs. Sarah Bowers of Somerville, Tennessee. One daughter, Mrs. Mary Bowers, and one son Dr. G. M. Emrick, are dead. Besides her daughter she leaves several grandchildren and many friends. Funeral services were held at Grace Evangelical church in Brookville Tuesday afternoon at about two o'clock. Services were conducted by Rev. J. W. Michael of Cedarville, Illinois, assisted by Rev. E. Y. Knapp. Interment was in the Evangelical cemetery at Brookville. Among those from out of town who were here to attend the funeral were Mrs. G. M. Emrick, Roscoe Emrick, Lloyd and Jerry Bowers and Mr. and Mrs. George Fager of Chicago, Mrs. Sarah Bowers of Somerville, Tennessee, and Ada Neff of Rochelle, Bert Fager of Lanark.
