BURTON FLETCHER was born in Pike Township, Bradford County, PA, April 1, 1827 and died at the home of his son, L.B. Fletcher in Milledgeville, Feb. 5, 1905, age 77 years, 10 mts and 4 days. On March 16, 1852 he was married to Aurelia Humphrey of Hartford Conn. To this union were born six children, two of whom died in infancy and Mrs. Ida J. Johnson who died four years ago and Myron T., Emma A., and Lincoln B., who are still living. His wife died Oct. 11, 1877. On May 21, 1879 he married Alice Vale, who survives. He also has a brother, Riley Fletcher, living at Syracuse NY. In the fall of 1850 Mr. Fletcher came to Wysox Twp. and settled on the farm where he resided until the fall of 1902 when he moved to Milledgeville with his son. During his life he did a great deal of public work. In his younger years he taught school in the winter and farmed in the summer. After coming to this country he served severalyears as assessor and later he served a number of years as supervisor until compelled to resign because of his great affliction. When Burton Fletcher was in the prime of his manhood his eyesight failed and soon he was in total darkness. For over a quarter of a century he could not see the faces of his friends and loved ones whose voices he so quickly recognized. To one whose mind was ever grasping after truth and knowledge the loss of sight was a sore afflictin. In his youth he was a great reader and by listening to the reading of current literature and to the conversation of his family and friends he has until a short time ago kept well informed concerning current events. He loved to hear that right had triumphed over wrong. That the spirit of liberty was abroad in the world and of the marvelous discoveries in science. The funeral services were held in the Brethren church at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, the pastor M.A. Witter officiating. The pallbearers were Y.M. Cantrall, J.F. Greenawalt, C.W. Allison, B.F. Neikirk, F.J. Goble, and WIlliam Calkins. Interment at the Union Grove Cemetery.

E. VIOLA (SMITH) FLETCHER was born March 28th 1856 in Carroll county, Ill., and died at 8:30 o’clock a.m. at the Augustana Hospital, in Chicago, September 7th, 1890, at the age of forty-three years, five months, and ten days. She was the eldest of two daughters of Henry and Phebe Smith She was married to Simeon J. Fletcher, on April 15th, 1875, with whom she lived a quiet happy life. No children were born of the union. Her father, mother, and only sister, Gertrude, have preceded her to the other world. Her mother died , March 5th, 1893. Gertrude died November 28th, 1893. The father died September 23rd, 1896. Sister Viola united with Brethen church, February 25, 1894 of which she continued a faithful member until death. She had been a great sufferer for several years but was very patient and even in the last trying ordeal from which she never fully rallied she was calm and resigned. There remains to mourn her loss a husband and George J. Smith, a cousin, who was raised in the family since he was five years old, and whose loss is that of a sister, so near must she have seemed to him. All who knew her and the departed father, mother and sister, bear testimony to the high esteem in which whey were held in the community. Her Christian grace and humility were quietly seen in considerate acts of helpfulness to those about her, and her quiet influence was ever felt in the work of her church, be it charity for the poor, or support for the missions, her assistance came unsolicited. Many blessings from her kindly heart took on tangible form into help rendered to the poor through our Chicago mission, which will fall under the promised blessing of the Lord. “in as much as ye did it unto the least of these my disciples ye did it unto me.” Thus passes out of this work and into a better one, the last member of a family who settled in Carroll county, Illinois, in 1853, who have lived nobly, prospered and have been honored and loved by a multitude among who she lived and moved as an example of practical Christian love and patience. The funeral services were held in the Brethern church in Milledgeville, Ill., at 2 o’clock p.m., Saturday, September 9th, 1899, conducted by Rev. J. J. Rapp, of the M. E. church, where after which the remains were laid to rest in Bethel cemetery.

ESTELLA (RANSOM) FLETCHER was born on what is now known as the old Ransom farm in Elkhorn Grove Township, Carroll County, Illinois, September 10, 1857, and died in Milledgeville, March 18, 1899, at the age of 41 years, 6 months and 8 days. Her early life was spent in school and on the farm and later for several years she was employed as teacher in the public schools of the county. This active life developed in her an independence of thought and action, which was one of the characteristics of her nature and which, coupled with her sunny and buoyant disposition, was the inspiration to the many acts of kindness and helpfulness, for which many remember her, when sickness needed help, of sorrow consolation. She was united in marriage to Myron T. Fletcher, September 7, 1882, and with his resided in Milledgeville, with the exception of one years spent in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, until March 1898, when they moved to their farm near Storm Lake, Iowa. Failing health soon thereafter caused alarm, and upon the advice of physicians, she with her husband returned to Milledgeville. When it was determined that her malady was a fatal one, she began the weary wait for the end with a fortitude and resignation, brightened by a cheerfulness, which were a marvel and consolation to her friends. Her religion was represented by deeds and not by a belief in creeds. She read and thought much and talked often of the new theological and sociological problems which are engaging the attention of so many scholars and thinkers at the present time, the solution of which she believed would result in the universal church, the general recognition of the fatherhood of God, he brotherhood of man, and the bettering of the condition of the common people. She had confidence in that Infinite and Eternal Energy through which we come and go, and which is with us alway. When she knew that her suffering tended to no distant end she felt great regret at being called thus early when life seemed to anger such bright prospects for happiness. The struggle which followed resulted in victory and from that time to the end she was uncomplaining and cheerful and felt that all would be well. "Sustained and soothed by an unfaltering trust," she approached her grave "like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him, and lies down to pleasant dreams." To mourn her untimely death she leaves a husband, mother and three brothers, besides a large circle of friends. The funeral services were held in the Methodist church, Monday forenoon at 10 o'clock, Rev. J. . Rapp officiating, assisted by Rev. R. R. Teeter. Interment took place in the Union cemetery.

HELEN (SMITH) FULRATH , daughter of William R. and Elizibeth Smith, was born August 30, 1846 near Chambersburg, Pa., and died November 27, 1913 aged 67 years, 2 months and 27 days. Sbe came with her parents to Carroll county, Illinois, in the year 1854 when a child of eight years, and has resided in Carroll county ever since, with the exception of about four year’s residence in Iowa. She was married to Adam Fulrath March 13, 1864 and to this union were born eleven children, six sons and five daughters, all living. There are also twenty-four grandchildren and a great number of relatives and friends to mourn her loss. She was converted at the age of thirteen in a cottage prayer meeting at Center Hill and united with the United Brethren church of which she remained a faithful member to the time of her death. Familiarly known as Aunt Hannah, she was greatly loved and respected by her family and all her acquaintances. She was a regular attendant at the services of God’s house whenever possible, and nothing pleased her better than to be in a good spiritual meeting, whether in the prayer meeting, love feast .or regular preaching eervices. Her soul feasted upon the word of God, and her face beamed with light and joy under the preaching of God’s blessed word. She prayed and wept much over the condition of the unsaved. Often her soul travailed in agony over the unsaved and she offered the prevailing prayer of the righteous. Her home was always open to the tired and worn itinerant preacher and if ever the preacher found a welcome home it was at Sister Fulraths. She will be greatly missed in every way. In the home her husband will greatly miss a loving companion to cheer him in his declining years, children will greatly miss mother, and the home will be lonely, but her sweet spirit has gone to be at rest with God. In the church how greatly she will be missed. Not many fathers and mothers with us of her great piety and faith. Her kindness and suffering was of protracted duration and she suffered much for many weeks. All that kind hands could possibly do was done to minister to her comfort and to make her as comfortable as possible. She fell asleep in Jesus about 2 o’clock November 27. Thus another saint of God has gone to receive the reward given, to the faithful. May husband, children and all her loved ones cherish her memory, and may all be so fortunate as to meet her on the side of the church triumphant. She was borne to her last resting place by her six Sons. The funeral was conducted from the Center hill U. B. church in the presence of a large concourse of relatives, friends and neighbors by Rev. A. X Harrison, Rev. E. E. Plumley assisting. The text was one of her own choice: Luke 23: 28; “Weep not for me but weep for yourselves and for your children.” A.X.H. (Contributed by Donald L. Boyd from the Christian Conservator December 24, 1913)
