PAUL and DEMARISE (LEGEL) GAAR - Double funeral services for Paul and Demarise Gaar, Milledgeville couple who died here Wednesday night in an apartment fire, have tentatively been set for 2 p.m. Saturday in the Woodin Funeral Home. Rev. Glen Shively, pastor of the Milledgeville Church of the Brethren, will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Knoll Cemetery. There will be no visitation. At the inquest in the funeral home here Thursday afternoon, it was ruled that the couple died of suffocation. During the inquest conducted by Carroll County Coroner Dr. L. B. Hussey, it was brought out that the couple were just inches away from safety when they suffocated. The Gaars, whose apartment was located above an empty store being converted for use as a post office, were found at the main entrance to their dwelling, their charred bodies lying at the threshold of the locked front door. Their son, Richard, 14, was able to flee the burning building by the back stairs. He was awakened by the mother’s screams. He tried to re-enter the building to reach his parents but was driven back by the smoke and heat, Dr. Hussey said. The apartment’s front door always had been difficult to open, the coroner reported, and the Gaars apparently were struggling with the lock when both lost consciousness. The Gaars probably could have been saved, the coroner said, if they had stayed in their bedroom and tried to escape through a window. Deputy Fire Marshals Jerome Hobel, Rockford, and Robert Puckett, Sterling, indicated the fire may have been caused by defective wiring, although the building was rewired within the past two years. Paul Gaar was born December 31, 1913 in Thomson, son of Harry and Lottie Gaar. They were married in 1941 in Clinton, Iow. In addition to those listed previously, survivors are his father and one grandchild; four brothers, Vaughn of Savanna, Delbert of Glendale, Arizona, Merle of Hobbs, N. M., and Darrell of Aurora; and three sisters, Mrs. John Smolak of Savanna, Mrs. Merrill Miller of Plainview, Texas, and Mr. Edgar Murney of Polo. In addition to those listed previously, survivors are one brother, Myrnice Legal of Mount Carroll and a sister, Mrs. Grace Paullis of Tacoma, Washington.
