LOIS ELAINE (WIEMAN) HAGEN
, age 75, of Savanna, Illinois, passed away Sunday, July 27, 2008 at Lutheran General Hospital, Park Ridge, Illinois, after surgery and a long illness related to pulmonary and kidney problems. A Funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 2, 2008 at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, Savanna, Illinois with Reverend Philip Bigelow officiating. Interment will take place at Savanna Township Cemetery. Friends may call from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. Friday, August 1, 2008 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Memorials may be given to St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, 130 Third Street, Savanna, Illinois 61074 in Lois’s memory.
Lois was born on January 20, 1933, in Verona, North Dakota, the daughter of Bernard and Lily (Aahl) Wieman. She confirmed her Christian faith at the Lutheran Church, Igloo, South Dakota. Lois married Ronald Duane Hagen on September 9, 1950 at the Lutheran Church in Igloo, South Dakota.
Lois was a long-time resident of Savanna and an active member of St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, Savanna. Lois and her husband owned and operated Palisades Golf Course from 1961 to 1995. Lois was engaged in many crafts; sewing, knitting, crocheting, quilting, rosemaling, stained glass, tailoring, and doll making are only a few examples.
Lois is survived by her husband, Ronald Hagen; four children; Susan (Jeffrey) Clark, John (Marsha) Hagen, Connie Hagen (Bill Lamm), and Kathleen (Hal) Sutter. She also leaves behind 13 grandchildren; James (Erin) Clark, Rachel and Christine Clark, Joshua (Oneida) Hagen, Morgan, Taylor, Sloane and Steffan Hagen, Andrew and Hannah Sutter, Andrea (Matt) Hess, Julie (Buddy) Burton, Steve (Kathy) Lamm, and seven great grandchildren; Mikayla, Rian, Connor, Rebekah, Isaac, Amy and Matthew, her sister-in-law, Marilyn Wieman and two nephews, James and Jonathan Wieman.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Lily and Bernard Wieman and her brother, James Wieman
JAMES LAURENCE HALFMAN
, age 55, of Rock Falls, Illinois, formerly of Thomson, Illinois, died Tuesday, July 8, 2008, unexpectedly at home. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 11, 2008 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Thomson with Reverend Paul Judd of the Thomson United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Lower York Cemetery, Thomson. Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Thursday, July 10 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Thomson. A memorial fund has been established in Jim’s name.
Jim was born December 19, 1952 in Morrison, Illinois, the son of Laurence and Alice (Morrison) Halfman. He is a graduate of the Thomson High School with the Class of 1971. Jim currently worked at St. Mary’s Cement, Dixon, Illinois since 1984. He loved spending time with his two daughters and granddaughter. Jim also enjoyed woodworking and going to auctions. He would often hear his number read, after the auctioneer would shout "going once, going twice, sold to #....".
Jim will be dearly missed by a daughter, Emily Halfman of Sterling, Illinois; a step-daughter, Jaime (Brent) Thomas of Sterling; his mother, Alice Halfman of Thomson, Illinois; a granddaughter, Jersey Thomas of Sterling; four sisters, JoAnne (Brad) Kloepping of Princeton, Illinois, Karen Shaffer of Thomson, Lisa (Brian) Ruhl of Moline, Illinois and Debbie Halfman of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a special friend, Hazel Siddens of Sterling; four nephews; two nieces; two great-nephews; a great-niece; and all of his special friends that he met through auctions. Jim is preceded in death by his father, Laurence L. Halfman.
TERRY HAMMER
, age 51, of Savanna, Illinois, died Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at his home. A visitation will be held Sunday, July 20, 2008, from 2 – 4 pm at the Savanna Law – Jones Funeral Home with a time of remembrance at 3:30pm. Inurnment will follow at a later date. A memorial fund has been established in Terry’s memory.
Terry was born July 9, 1957, in Morrison, Illinois, the son of Glenn and Goldie (Dalton) Hammer. He attended school in Colorado, and graduated from Pueblo High School. Terry served in the United States Army before being medically discharged. He married Tammy Weipert, they later divorced and remained friends.
Terry worked as a carpenter, traveling across the county, mostly in Texas, Colorado, and Florida, working on various construction sites. He also worked for McGinnis Melons in Thomson, Illinois. Terry was a kind hearted and humble person who loved spending time with his all of his family. He always made time to go family functions.
Terry is survived by two sons, Terry Hammer, Jr. of Florida, and Jameson (Amy) Horton of Clinton, Iowa; two daughters, Sharon (fiance Tom Helt, Sr.) Hammer of Florida, and Tasha Horton of Clinton; eleven grandchildren; three brothers, Duane (Karen) Hammer of Milledgeville, Illinois, Allan (Phyllis) Hammer of Savanna, and John Hammer of Pueblo, Colorado; four sisters, Karen (John) Stevenson of Galena, Illinois, Pam (Jim) Green of Coleta, Illinois, Glenda (Jimmy) Moore of Thomson, and Debbie Hammer of Pueblo; as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.
Terry was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Larry Hammer; one sister, Sharon Parker; and one nephew, David Hammer.
ADA HARTMAN
- Funeral service for Miss Ada Hartman, 94, of Mount Carroll, who died Friday at Good Samaritan Nursing Center, was held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Frank Funeral Home in Mount Carroll. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Mount Carroll. (The Social Security Death Index gives the date of her death as July 1980.) Born May 5, 1886 in Mount Carroll, she was the daughter of William and Fannie (Hicks) Hartman. Surviving are one brother, Ward Hartman of Sun City, Calif.; and one sister, Pearl Ostergaard of Arcadia, Calif.
ANNA MAE (TRAUM) HARTMAN
- 92, of Mount Carroll, died Sunday night at Savanna City Hospital.
She was a member of Salem Trinity Lutheran Church and the NC Club.
Born May 24, 1892 in Chadwick, she was the daughter of Nicholaus and Elizabeth (Yost) Traum. She married Henry Hartman in Chadwick on August 14, 1910.
Surviving are 10 sons, Willard, Norris, and Warren all of Savanna, Floyd of Clinton, IA, Norman and Louvell, both of Thomson, Arnold, Raymond, and Virgil, all of Fulton and Henry of Ukiah, CA; five daughters, Lucille Ven Huizen of Clinton, Mrs. Helen (Ralph) Kramer and Mrs. Luella (John) Garrison, both of Sterling, Mrs. Betty (Albert) Notz of Savanna, and Mrs. Darlene (William) Vos of Morrison; one sister, Luella Baumgardt of Milledgeville; 63 grandchildren; 74 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceeded in death by her husband, two sons, two grandchildren, and three sisters.
ARNOLD L. HARTMAN
, 90, of Fulton, IL, died Monday, December 10, 2007, at Mercy Medical Center North, Clinton, IA.
Arnold was born September 11, 1917 in Thomson, IL, to Henry L. and Anna (Traum) Hartman. He was educated in the Thomson grade schools. He was employed by area farmers until he entered the U.S. Army, where he served in the U.S. and the South Pacific during WWII. Arnold married Grace E. Zuidema on June 28, 1946 in Dubuque, IA. Following his military service, he was employed as a carpenter. He later was employed by Herman Nelson in Morrison, IL, Drives, Inc. in Fulton, IL, and Clinton Engineering in Clinton, IA. His hobbies included carpentry and the construction of his own home. He also enjoyed making black walnut clocks, woodcrafts, gardening, and raising mini-corn to sell.
Survivors include his wife, Grace; one son, Rex Hartman of Fulton, IL; three granddaughters, Lindsay Hannan of Moline, IL; Melanie and Rachel Purcell both of Clinton, IA; six great grandchildren, Aaron Hasenmiller, Cade Hannan, Madison Burman, Vaughn, Lea, and Marlee Purcell; five sisters, Mrs. Lucille VenHuizen of Clinton, IA; Mrs. Helen Kramer of Sterling, IL; Betty (Albert) Notz of Mt. Carroll, IL; Luella (John) Garrison of Sterling, IL; and Mrs. Darlene Vos of Morrison, IL; two brothers, Norman (Gilda) Hartman of Fulton, IL and Norris (Shirley) Hartman of Mt. Carroll, IL.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Vickie Purcell-Weaver; nine brothers, Willard, Leonard, Floyd, Virgil, Ivan, Warren, Raymond, Levell, and Henry Hartman.

CORNELIA (VOSS) HARTMAN , age 94, of Savanna, Illinois, died Tuesday, February 10, 2009, at Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Mt. Carroll, Illinois. A funeral will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 14, 2009 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Savanna, with Pastor Lynne Matthews of the Hanover United Methodist Church, Hanover, Illinois officiating. Burial will be in the Lower York Cemetery, Thomson, Illinois. A Visitation will be held from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. prior to the service of the funeral home. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Cora’s memory to the Good Samaritan Nursing Home 1006 N. Lowden Road, Mt. Carroll, Illinois 61053. Cora was born on February 25, 1914, in Albany, Illinois, the daughter of John and Jennie (Newendyke) Voss. On August 22, 1933, Cora married Willard A. Hartman in Fulton, Illinois. Willard died June 21, 1996 in Clinton, Iowa. Cora was a homemaker and worked in Savanna in many homes as a house cleaner. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Clinton, Iowa. She enjoyed helping her husband with woodworking. Cora loved embroidering, word books, cooking, reading and walking everywhere. Most of all Cora enjoyed the time she spent with her family. Cora is survived by two daughters, Cora Mae Stricker of Savanna, Sharon Kay Orth of Hanover, Illinois; four sons, Paul (Marilyn) Hartman of Savanna, Kenneth (Carolyn) Hartman of West Columbia, South Carolina, Richard Hartman of Savanna, William (Marisa) Hartman of Savanna; thirteen grandchildren; thirty one great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren. Cora is preceded in death by her parents; husband Willard; two infant sons, Willard Jr., Rex Allen; five brothers, Harold 1921-1980, James, Jacob, Seymour, Harry 1917-1918; six sisters, Winnie, Esther, Henrietta 1919-2003, Pauline, Jeanette, Henrietta 1915-1918. - Funeral services for Ed K. Hartman, 59, well known Fair Haven township farmer who died about 6 p. m. Sunday in the Morrison hospital, were conducted here Tuesday.
A brief service was held at 1;30 p. m. in the Frank funeral home in Chadwick, followed by rites in St. Paul's Lutheran church west of Chadwick. The Rev. Frederick Freytag, pastor, officiated, and burial was in the cemetery adjoining the church.
Mrs. Howard Etnyre and Mrs. Curtis Naniga sang, and floral tributes were in charge of Mrs. Carl Maring and Mrs. Orion Alexander. Casket attendants were six nephews of the deceased.
Mr. Hartman had been seriously ill for some time and had visited several hospitals and clinics, but had secured no relief.
Ed K. Hartman was born Jan. 3, 1885, in Fair Haven township, the son of George and Rosa (Rentschler) Hartman. He grew to manhood in the community, attended schools near his home, and was engaged in farming practically all his life.
On Dec, 10, 1913, he was married to Miss Mary Knoess in Mt. Carroll. She preceded him in death April 10, 1937.
He is survived by a son, Harvey Hartman, who lives on the home farm; two daughters, Mrs. Preston Downing of Mt. Carroll and Miss Crystal, at home; and three brothers, Charles W., Fred D., and George H. Hartman, all residing in the vicinity of Ideal
ELIZABETH (REISTER) HARTMAN
- A host of sorrowing friends and relatives of Mrs. Elizabeth Hartman gathered at her house and at the Hope church Friday afternoon to pay their respects to the friend of mankind who had passed on the Eternal Life. The solemn and beautiful funeral services were held under the direction of Rev. S. G. Eberly, assisted by Rev. G. Wykle of Geneseo. Interment was made in the Chadwick Cemetery .
Members of the Rahn quartet, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Rahn, Miss Kathryn Rahn and Elmer Rahn, sang three hymns which had been favorites of the deceased, in a splendid manner. The songs were “In The Sweet Bye and Bye,” “Asleep in Jesus,” and “Farewell Mother.” Floral offerings of all sizes and of rare fragrance surrounded the casket at the home, showing that during her long and useful life Mrs. Hartman had made a great many friends who had now assembled to show their love for a kindly soul who had answered her Master’s call.
Mrs. Elizabeth Hartman, nee Reister, was born in Hessen Darmstadt Germany , August 18, 1844, and died at her home in Chadwick , Illinois July 12, 1932, at the age of 87 years, 10 months, and 25 days. At the age of 12 years, she with her parents bid farewell to their native country and came to America , where they sought greater liberties and better conveniences in making a livelihood for themselves. They located in the vicinity of Chadwick where she has spent her entire life.
In September 1866, she was united in marriage to Henry Hartman. (Transcriber’s Note: The Illinois Statewide Marriage Index gives the date as November 13, 1866.) God blessed this union with eleven children, four sons and seven daughters, At the age of twenty years Mother Hartman gave her heart and life to God, and united with the Evangelical church, of which she has been a loyal and faithful member until death.
Her long and useful life in the church, during which she was always willing and ready to do such things as she could in honor of her God, has impressed her influence for righteousness both upon the youth and the aged. Her life was not an easy one strewn with flowers and sunshine, as well one knows she reared a large family, but one of trials and heartaches. But in all this she never lost faith in God, who was a great comfort and help to her. Her fellowship with God molded her character and disposition in a marvelous way, and made her a most kind and affectionate mother, friend, and neighbor. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She leaves to mourn her deep loss three sons and six daughters: Mrs. John Zugschwerdt, John Hartman and Mrs. Lewis Bachman, all of Garden City, S. D.; J, W. Hartman and Mrs. A. C. Burke of Waterloo, Iowa; Mrs. George Traum of Mt. Carroll; Mrs. Wesley Kness of Thomson, Henry Hartman of Chadwick and Miss Mary Hartman at home. Thirty-eight grandchildren and thirty-seven great-grandchildren as well as many other relatives and friends also survive. Her husband, one daughter, Katie, and a son, George, preceded her in death.
Pall bearers were Etter Humbert, Hiram George, W. J. Schreiner, David Gipe, O, H, Imel, and John Frank.
FLORENCE (VINSON) HARTMAN , 76, of Apache Junction, AZ, formerly of Savanna and Sterling, died Saturday, November 29, 2003, after an extended illness. She was employed by Miami Hotel Sterling, for many years, Dixon State School for 10 years and Illinois Department of Children and Family Services for 10 years. Mrs. Hartman was born April 27, 1927, in Walnut Ridge, AR, the daughter of Eddie and Lola (Collins) Vinson. She married Harold Hartman in Arizona. Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Lola Kathleen (Lenny) Kahne of Lyndon, Connie Todd and Gail (Chuck) Crow, both of Rock Falls; three sons, Michael L. (Viola) O'Neal of rural Lanark, Thomas (Mindy) Todd and Anthony "Tony" (Valintina) Todd, both of Sterling; four brothers, Paul (Marilyn) Vinson of Sterling, James (Pat) Vinson of Walnut Ridge, AR, Eddie "Bud" Vinson and Wyman "Skip" Vinson, both of Rock Falls; four sisters, Patsy Nan (Harold) Marks and Alice Gaines, both of Rock Falls, and Mattie Lou (Dave) Jacobs and Barbara Sue (Don) Clark, both of Sterling; 17 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. Her sister, Anne Ceplina, son, Anthony "Tony" Todd, and a great-grandson precede her in death. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations are made at the time of local services. - Funeral services for Fred Carl Hartman were held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Hope EUB Church, with Rev. Kenneth Cohee officiating. Burial was in the Chadwick Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Charles Hartman, Thomson; Bernard Hartman, Lanark; Paul Hartman, Thomson; Marvin Hartman, Lanark; Harvey Hartman, Mount Carroll, and Kenneth Wood, Mount Carroll.
The men's quartet, Oscar Rahn, Evan Rahn, George Weber and Arnold Prowant, sang What a Friend We Have in Jesus and Safe in the Arms of Jesus.
Mrs. Herbert Stein was the accompanist. Floral tributes were cared for by Mrs. Leona Wagner, Mrs. Alvin Reiff and Mrs. Alvin Prowant. In charge of the register was Mrs. E. M. Ritenour.
GEORGE B. HARTMAN
, 84, was born Dec. 16, in Rudingshain, Germany, and came to Illinois in 1882. March 13, 1884, he was united in marriage with Miss Rose Benschler. They established their home on the Cole farm and later moved to the farm at Ideal now occupied by his son, Charles. They resided there until 1924 when they moved to Chadwick where Mrs. Hartman passed away Jan. 11, 1933.
Since the death of his wife, Mr. Hartman has made his home with his children, Mrs. George Knoess, Fred, Ed and Charles, all of Chadwick and vicinity.
GRACE L. (WILLIAMS) HARTMAN
a longtime resident of Freeport, died this morning in Good Samaritan Center, Mount Carroll. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church. Born Oct. 6, 1885 in Lincoln, Neb., she was the daughter of Clem and Emma Williams. In January 1906, she married John Hartman in Chadwick. He died January 1921. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. James (Beulah) Miller of Toledo, Ohio, Mrs. Leonard (Gladys) Lance of Mount Carroll, Mrs. Walter (Neva) Ascher of Freeport, and Mrs. Orville (Lucille) Jackson of Bellevue, Iowa; a son, Harold of Freeport; nine grand-children; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by two brothers and a sister. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Frank Funeral Home, Chadwick. The Rev. Eldon Schriver, pastor of Faith United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Chadwick Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. GRACE B. (BECKENKELLER) HARTMAN
79, of Mount Carroll died Saturday March 11, 2000 at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Mount Carroll . She was born November 18, 1920 to Richard and Martha (Gast) Beckenkeller. She married Harvey E. Hartman March 14, 1939 in Clinton , Iowa . He died July 31, 1997. She was a member of Black Oak Lutheran Church in rural Chadwick. Her pastimes included cooking, baking, embroidering, flowers and birds. Surviving are one sister, Lucille (Robert) Paul of Mount Carroll; three nieces, Barbara (Larry) Kness of Thomson, Dian (Clell) Alden of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and Ruby (Sam) Dykstra of Mount Carroll; one nephew, Duane (Connie) Schubert of Morrison and several grand-nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, and one brother, in infancy. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home in Mount Carroll . Pastor Robert Schubert of First Brethren Church in Lanark will officiate. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Mount Carroll . H.C. HARTMAN
died at his residence in Coleta last Friday, Oct. 31st, at 5 o'clock a. m. Mr. Hartman came to Coleta last February, a stranger among us, purchased the stock of goods of Henry Wickey and went to work to build up for himself a reputation as a business man of ability and integrity. The many warm friends he gathered around him during his short business career in our midst indicate more plainly than words that his efforts were not in vain. On Saturday his remains were taken to Sheldahl, Iowa, where he formerly lived, for interment. He leaves behind to mourn his departure, a widow, one daughter, (Mrs. Miller of Sheldahl, Iowa.) and two brothers, who desire to return their sincere thanks to all their Coleta friends who so kindly aided them during his sickness and after his demise until his remains were removed from the State for interment.

, age 82, of Mt. Carroll died Thursday, July 31, 1997 at Samaritan Hospital North in Clinton, Iowa. Harvey was born Sunday, April 18, 1915 in Fairhaven Township, Illinois to Edward K. and Mary L. (Knoess) Hartman. He married Grace B. Beckenkeller on March 14, 1939 in Clinton, Iowa. Harvey farmed for thirty-five years in the Mt. Carroll, Chadwick, and Stockton area. He also worked as a machine operator for twenty years in Stockton. Harvey was a past member of Black Oak Lutheran Church in rural Chadwick. He enjoyed gardening, singing, and taking care of animals. Survivors include his wife, Grace Hartman of Mt. Carroll; one sister, Bessie (Preston) Downing of Mt. Carroll; three nieces, Barbara (Larry) Kness of Thomson, Illinois, Diane (Clell) Alden of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and Ruby (Sam) Dykstra of Mt. Carroll; and one nephew, Duane (Connie) Schubert of Morrison, Illinois. Harvey is preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Crystal Schubert.
IVA M. (SHILEY) HARTMAN , 96, of Savanna, Illinois passed away Tuesday, March 28, 2006, at Big Meadows Nursing Home in Savanna, Illinois. A Funeral Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 1, 2006 at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Savanna. Pastor Mike Meyer of the Savanna Bible Church will be officiating. Friends may call from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday, March 31, 2006 at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Savanna. Memorials may be given to the Savanna Bible Church and or the donor’s choice in Iva’s memory. Iva was born on August 12, 1909, in Lanark, the daughter of Harry and Lucy (Ray) Shiley. In 1928, Iva graduated from Lanark High School in Lanark, Illinois and later attended St. Anthony’s School of Nursing in Rockford, Illinois where she graduated in 1931. In 1932, Iva served Carroll County as Deputy Sheriff under her father who was sheriff at the time. Iva began her nursing career in Savanna, Illinois where she worked in the O.B. ward at the hospital for twenty- five years until 1964. She later worked for ten years at the Mercy Hospital in Clinton, Iowa as a surgical nurse, retiring from there in 1974. Iva continued her nursing career working as the head night nurse at Harbor Crest Nursing Home in Fulton, Illinois. She finally gave up her nursing license when she was 85 years old. Through all her lifetime she cared for everyone who fell ill and needed care. She even cared for the elderly in her home while she had a full time job. Iva was also a member of the Savanna Bible church where she was the church organist and pianist until she was 90 years old. Iva also loved to travel. Iva will be deeply missed by her son, Allan (Sandra) Hartman of Clinton, Iowa; daughter, Alice (Paul) Hartman-Nau of Hendersonville, North Carolina; nine grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; and two great, great grandchildren. , 85, of Mount Carroll died Wednesday April 19, 2000 at Freeport Manor Nursing Home in Freeport . He was born November 23, 1914 in Mount Carroll to Edward F. and Nora (Stemm) Hartman, and graduated from Mount Carroll High School in 1932. On December 28, 1941 he and Mabel F. Broege were married in Savanna. She died in 1977. He later married Betty Johnson, who also preceded him in death. A sheet metal worker, he was employed at Herman Nelson Corp. in Morrison, and also worked at Eaton Corp. in Lanark. During World War II he served in the Army. He was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mount Carroll . An avid Chicago Cubs fan, he enjoyed following the Chicago sports teams. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, gardening and hunting for morel mushrooms. Surviving are one daughter, Nancy Zink, of Shannon; three sons, Joseph E. Hartman of Rockford , Frank W. Hartman of Mount Carroll , and Roger D. (Janice) Hartman of Fulton; four grandchildren, April R. Zink and Phillip, Benjamin, and Kate Hartman; one brother, James (Patricia) Hartman of Mount Carroll; one sister-in-law, Lee Hartman of Byron; and one brother-in-law, Robert Parenteau of Freeport . Preceding him in death were his parents; both wives, one sister, Thelma Parenteau, and one brother, Alfred Hartman. The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home in Mount Carroll . Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Mount Carroll . He was born November 6, 1919 in Fairhaven Township, rural Chadwick, IL to Henry and Anna Mae Traum Hartman.
He attended school in Thompson, IL.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army. He received a Bronze Battle Star and a Silver Battle Star while serving in the Normandy and Rhineland theaters.
He had been a press operator with International Harvester Company in Moline, IL for 29 years, retiring in 1979.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Carroll County Farm Bureau, and the Fulton American Legion.
Survivors include five sisters, Lucille VenHuizen of Clinton, IA, Helen Kramer and Mrs. Luella (John) Garrison, both of Sterling, IL, Mrs. Betty (Albert) Notz of Savanna, IL, and Mrs. Darlene (William) Bos of Morrison, IL; six brothers, Floyd Hartman of Clinton, IA, Arnold, Virgil, and Norman Hartman all of Fulton, IL, Henry Hartman of Ukiah, CA, and Norris Hartman of rural Mount Carroll, IL.
He was preceded in death by five brothers.

- Final rites were held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from Frank funeral home in Chadwick and at 2 o'clock from St. Paul's Lutheran church for Mrs. Edward Hartman of that place. The pastor, the Rev. H. Braun officiated. Mrs. Curtis Naniga and Mrs. Harold Etnyre, accompanied by Miss Laura Daehler sang, ‘The Old Ruggged Cross,’ ‘Sometime We'll Understand’ and ‘Abide With Me.’ Attending the casket were Clarence Hartman, Orion Alexander, Isaac Decker, Henry Reehl, Phillip Queckboerner, and Albert Aldolph. Mrs. Orion Alexander and Mrs. Carl Maring were in charge of the floral tributes.

Mrs. Edward Hartman, nee Maria Louisa Knoess, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Knoess, sr., was born in Fair Haven township April 10, 1893. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was always a faithful member of St. Paul's Lutheran church.
December 10, 1913, she was united in marriage to Edward Hartman. This union was blessed with three children, Harvey, Bessie, and Crystal. The young couple settled on a farm near Ideal where they lived for several years and later moved to the farm where Mrs. Hartman passed away.
About four months ago Mrs. Hartman became ill, but her family and relatives cherished the earnest longing and hope that after a few weeks she would be fully restored. Yet in the wise council of God it was ordered otherwise. During the last few weeks a change for the worse took place and although she received the best of care from relatives and especially her husband and daughter Bessie. Her condition grew worse and April 10 she passed away at the age of 44 years.
She leaves to mourn her departure her husband and three children, two sisters, Mrs. William Kniss of Lanark, and Mrs. Henry Schleuning of Chadwick and one brother, George of Chadwick, her father-in-law, George B. Hartman, five brothers-in-law, William Kniss, Henry Schleuning, Fred, Charles and George Hartman and four sisters-in-law, Mrs. George Knoess, Mrs. Fred Hartman, Mrs. Charles Hartman, and Mrs. George Hartman; also a host of relatives and friends.
Mrs. Hartman was a good wife and a loving mother, a Christian woman, faithful to her Saviour and her church. She possessed a pleasant disposition and was a kind and helpful neighbor.
MARTHA (JOHNSON) HARTMAN , 96, of Chadwick died Saturday Jan 15, 2005 at Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Mt. Carroll. She and her husband operated a meat processing plant in Chadwick for a number of years and she also was employed by Sterling Fashion Shop. Mrs. Hartmas was born May 14, 1908 in Morrison, the daughter of Henry and Mattie (Drewes) Johnson. She married Albert Hartman on Feb. 2, 1927 in Chadwick. He died Jan. 5, 1980. She was a member of 1st Evangelical Lutheran Church, Chadwick, a past matron and 50 year member of the Eastern Star and a past president and 50 year member of the Republican Womens' Club. She was very active in work at the church and in the community and enjoyed gardening and entertaining. Survivors include a nephew, Neil (Nancy) Hamilton of Rockford; and two nieces, Frances (Eugene) Weber of Chadwick and Veletta (Charles) Englund of Rockford. She was preced by two sisters. ROBERTA HARTMAN
, 72, of Denver , Colorado , formerly of Mount Carroll , died Thursday February 25, 1999 at her home. She was born December 17, 1926 in Merced , California and was a graduate of Merced High School . She married Robert A. Hartman November 6, 1945 in Mount Carroll . She and her husband developed Oakville Country Club near Mount Carroll and were its first owners and operators. A homemaker, she was an active volunteer at the Wellshire Presbyterian Church in Denver . She also was a member of PEO. She lived in Breckenridge , Colorado for 17 years before moving to Denver . Survivors include her husband; two sons, Scott Hartman of Buena Vista, Colorado and drew Hartman of Denver; one daughter, Darby Hartman of Grand Junction, Colorado; three sisters, Janice Freitas, Lorna Nunes, and Marilyn Williams, all of the Merced area; and one brother, Chester Halvorson of the Merced area. A memorial service was held Tuesday, March 2, at the Wellshire Presbyterian Church. The body was cremated and burial of the ashes will be in Oakville Cemetery , rural Mount Carroll .
VERNETTE I. (BECK) HARTMAN
, age 77, of Savanna, Illinois, died Sunday, June 15, 2008, at Good Samaritan Nursing Facility in Mount Carroll, Illinois. Funeral Services will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 19, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church, Savanna with Reverend Larry Thomson officiating. Interment will be in Lower York Cemetery, Thomson, Illinois. A visitation will be held from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. A memorial fund has been established in Vernette’s memory.
Vernette was born on August 21, 1930, the daughter of George C. and Lulu B. (Williams) Beck in Savanna. She graduated from Savanna Township High School on May 27, 1948. Vernette married Ivan C. Hartman on August 27, 1948 in the St. Peter Lutheran Church Parsonage, Savanna. Ivan died on March 17, 1979 in Iowa City, Iowa.
Most recently, Vernette enjoyed working at the Savanna Train Car and Museum, Savanna. She also worked for other local businesses; she was employed at Eaton Corporation, Savanna and as a sales associate at Duncan’s Department Store, Savanna. She also worked for The Swiss Colony, Savanna for seventeen years. Vernette cherished spending time with her family. She loved traveling and having mother and daughter days out, going to lunch and shopping. Vernette also enjoyed collecting antiques, playing Scrabble, and watching “Wheel of Fortune”. Vernette was a twenty five year survivor of cancer; her motto was to always “Think Positive”. She will be greatly missed by many family and friends.
Vernette is survived by one son, Eric C. (Lisa) Hartman of Sabula, Iowa; four daughters, Mollie (William) Lego of Rockford, Illinois, Marlene (Dennis) Kessler of Mount Carroll, LuAnne (Daniel) Heim of Galena, Illinois, and Kathy Hartman of Aurora, Colorado; nine grandchildren, Sarah (Brian) Rekenthaler, Ryan (Korey) Kessler, Nathan (Adrien) Kessler, John (Keri) Gillen Jr., Jessie Gillen, Brian Heim, Bryn, Aivan, and Deryn Hartman; and three great grandchildren, Ethan and Allison Kessler, and Kadence Gillen.
Vernette was preceded in death by her husband, Ivan; three brothers, Lawrence, Charles, and Paul; and one sister, Eloise Reynolds.

, 86, died Friday morning at a Freeport hospital following a lingering illness. He was born Feb. 28, 1862 in Carroll county the son of John and Elizabeth Hartman. He was married to Arlie Straw, Dec. 9, 1891. His wife preceded him in death. Survivors include five sons and a daughter, Irvin, Lailand, Mrs. George Van Busker, all of Shannon, William, jr., of Rock Falls, Benzil of Tama, Ia., and Everett. Four brothers and one sister also survive: Lewis of Lauren, Ia., Elizabeth Woessner of Sterling, August of Shannon, Fred of Rockford, and John of Freeport. Four grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 1:30 at the Scharman funeral home, Rev. Paul Church will officiate, and burial will take place in the Brethren cemetery.

She very much enjoyed family get-togethers, especially traveling to Japan to visit her brother, George. She was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church in Savanna. Marie will be dearly missed by her brother, George and his wife Nozomi of Tokyo, Japan; the Hartley family, Colleen, Mike, Dan, Kay and Rick, close friend, Dan Hartley of Savanna and her dear friend, Kathy Fulrath. Antone was born on Monday, May 9, 1927, to Antone and Eliza (Griffith) Holmquist. Antone served in the United States Navy during World War II. He married Mary A. Johnson on February 12, 1949 in Rockford, Illinois. Mary preceded Antone in death on November 4, 1989 in Clinton, Iowa. Antone worked thirty-three years at the Savanna Army Depot as a Forklift Operator and Truck driver. His hobbies include bowling, working on cars, he enjoyed the challenge of mending and fixing things around the house. Survivors include three daughters, Vicky (Keith) Houzenga of Fulton, IL, Penny (Rollin) Rickard of Boston, Ma.; Belinda (Gary) Keehner of Clinton, Iowa; two sons, Antone Holmquist, Jr. of Moscow, Idaho and David Holmquist of Stockton, IL; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Melva (Alex) King of Fairfield Bay, Arkansas and Fern (Clifford) Geibler of Maitland, Florida; and his companion, Jeanne Harris. , 74, of Scottsdale, Arizona, and formerly of Thomson, Illinois, died Thursday, August 9, 2001 at his home. Andrew was born Monday, February 7, 1927 in Thomson, the son of Andrew and Elizabeth (Bos) Hook. He married JoAnn W. Wiedman on November 15, 1951 in the Presbyterian Church in Clinton, Iowa. Andrew earned his undergraduate degree at Western Illinois University in Macomb and a Master's Degree from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. He served as Superintendent of Schools in Aurora, Illinois. Andrew and his wife moved to Arizona following his retirement in 1978. Survivors include his wife, JoAnn of Scottsdale; a daughter, Nancy Rutherford of Tampa, FL; two sons, Randy (Lisa) Hook of Olympia, WA, and Steve (Colleen) Hook of Scottsdale; four grandsons, Andrew and Bryan Hook and Jacob and Jon Rutherford; and a brother, Elmer Hook of Savanna. Graveside Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 14, 2001 at Lower York Cemetery in Thomson, Illinois. There will be no visitation. , 91 of Big Meadows Nursing home Savanna, died Tuesday Feb. 1, 2005 at the nursing home. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Hook was born July 13, 1913 in Dubuque Iowa, the daughter of Christian and Anne (Launspauch) Leslein. She attended Dubuque schools. She married Roy M. Hook on Feb. 11, 1950 in Mt. Carroll. She was a member of Savanna Bible Church, serving in many capacities. She enjoyed cooking and spending time with family. Survivors include her husband, a son Thomas J. (Ellen) Hook of Rockford, two grandaughters; five great grandchildren and several neices and and nephews. , our beloved mother at age 76, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 6, 2004 at Mayo Hospital, Scottsdale, Arizona.

Joanne was born on July 28, 1928 in Perry, Iowa to Joseph and Louise Weidman and was raised in Clinton, Iowa. Joanne was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 49 years, Andrew, who died August 9, 2001. They were married November 15, 1951 in Clinton, Iowa.
Joanne loved word games, easily finishing the New York Times crossword daily. She also enjoyed and was an excellent Bridge player. She had spent many hours through out the years proudly supporting her sons and their various athletic activities. Joanne loved all manner of sports, always following her favorite teams on TV. She also shared her great passion of reading with her daughter. Joanne loved and made many friends working 15 years at the gift shop in the Scottsdale Embassy Suites.
Joanne is survived by her sons, Steve and his wife Colleen, of Scottsdale Arizona; Randy and his wife Lisa of Olympia, WA; her daughter, Nancy of Tampa, Florida, and four Grandsons, Andrew, Bryan, Jake and Jon.

, 80, of Savanna, died Monday, November 18, 1985 at Savanna City Hospital. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Mount Carroll. The son of Epa and Jennie (Prins) Hook, he was born in Thomson on April 23, 1905. He married Jennie Kamphuis on April 1, 1925. Surviving are his widow; one daughter, Mrs. Roberta (Merton) Loomis of Savanna; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, six brothers and three sisters. Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Frank Funeral Home, Mount Carroll. The Rev. Ken Samuelson, pastor of First Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Lower York Cemetery, Thomson. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

, age 84 of Mt. Carroll, Illinois died Saturday, January 31, 2009 at FHN Memorial Hospital. Burial will be in York Cemetery, Thomson, Illinois. Visitation will be held 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Monday, February 2, 2009 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. A memorial fund has been established in Joyce's memory for the Mt. Carroll Ambulance Association and FHN Hospice. Joyce was born January 20, 1925 in Savanna, Illinois, the daughter of Thurman and Kathleen (Buckwalter) Mowry. Joyce married James Hook in 1944. James died on August 2, 1968. Joyce later married John J. Hovorka on September 30, 1977 in Mt. Carroll. Joyce farmed with her first husband and was a homemaker all of her life. Joyce also worked for Coast-to-Coast in Mt. Carroll for 14 years. She was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mt. Carroll since 1952. Joyce enjoyed knitting, crocheting, raising flowers, and working outdoors. She mostly loved the time that she spent with her family. Joyce is survived by her husband, John of Mt. Carroll; a daughter, Joan and Wayne Brooks of Mt. Carroll; two stepdaughters, Christine and Charles Mason, and Gwendolynn and Daryld Gahm, all of Mt. Carroll; six grandchildren, Wesley Brooks, Tel and Tyrel Fehlhafer, Shanna Bess, Ashlynn, and Theron Mason; two great grandchildren, Jackson and Raegan; a sister, Virginia Weber of Mt. Carroll; and a brother, Forrest E. Mowry of Mt. Carroll.
Joyce is preceded in death by her first husband, James, her parents and two stepfathers.
NORMA L. (SIMS) HUGHES
, age 80, of Savanna, Illinois, died Monday October 27, 2008, at Big Meadows Nursing Facility, Savanna, after a long illness. A Graveside Service will be held at Clinton Lawn Cemetery on Friday October 31, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend Larry Thomson from the First United Methodist Church, Savanna officiating. Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church in Savanna.
Norma was born May 5, 1928 in Clinton, Iowa to Glen E. “Jack” and Leona Getty Sims. She married Donald L. Hughes on May 5, 1951 in Clinton. She graduated from Clinton High School in 1946. Norma worked at Eaton Controls in Savanna as an inspector for twenty five years until her retirement.
Norma was a member of the Savanna First United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was an avid sports fan, cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs.
Norma will be dearly missed by her husband, Donald; one daughter, Nancy (Tom) Sweitzer of Milledgeville; a son, Donald Hughes Jr. of Aransas Pass, Texas; and a granddaughter, Allison (Aaron) Eilers of Billings, Montana.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
W.D. HUGHES
, for a great many years publisher of the Mt. Carroll Mirror, died in that city on Friday last, of consumption. Mr. Hughes had been in very poor health for a year or so past and for a few months previous to his death was unable to attend to his editorial duties. He was the oldest of the publishers in this county and was a man of good principles and upright character. He was a soldier in the late war and made an honorable record. We shall give a biographical sketch hereafter. The funeral was held on Sunday and was conducted by the Freeport Commandary of free masons. A number of the order from this place attended, among them Messrs. Compton, Walters, Wolfe, Lawton, Russell, and Barber.
GAIL S. HUTTON
, age 49, of Savanna, Illinois, died after a long illness, surrounded by her family on January 7, 2009 at FHN Memorial Hospital, Freeport, Illinois. A Memorial Visitation will be held from 5-8:00 p.m. Saturday, January 10, at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Savanna.
Gail was born October 7, 1959 in Manitowic, Wisconsin, the daughter of Gregory and Sharon (Schelthelm) Gappa. She graduated from Elk Grove Village High School, Elk Grove, Illinois. Gail married Tom Hutton on August 8, 1986 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Tom and Gail moved to Savanna, Illinois in 1989 where they were active conservationists and outdoorsmen. Gail enjoyed horseback riding, fishing, and hunting. She was an avid gardener and was very proud of her flower and vegetable garden, and her ornamental ponds. An expert quilter, Gail was pleased to donate her work to Carroll County Pheasants Forever. Gail was also an excellent cook. She loved animals, especially her dogs and horses.
While living in Savanna, Gail work for various businesses; including the Savanna office of Mt. Carroll Insurance Agency, Casey’s Convenience Store, Savanna, where she was the manager, Shopko in Freeport and US Bank, Clinton, Iowa.
Gail is survived by her husband, Tom Hutton of Savanna; her mother, Sharon Gappa of Manitowoc, Wisconsin; a brother, Greg Gappa, Jr. of Kentucky; her mother in-law, Theresa Hutton of Madison, Wisconsin; her step-daughter, Jodi (Michael) Champion of Neguanee, Michigan and their children, Gracie and Korie; her step-son, Christopher Hutton of Hancock, Michigan and his daughter, Isabell; three sisters in-law, Nadine Hutton of Santa Cruz, California, Valerie (Steven) Schwall of Indian Creek, Illinois and Pamela (Harold) Harsch of New Berlin, Wisconsin; her brother-in-law, Noel (Susan) Hutton of Middleton, Wisconsin; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Gail is preceded in death by her father and her father in-law, Arthur Hutton.
