JOSEPH HOOD
- Policeman Is Killed By Car At Savanna, Ill.
- Joseph Hood Struck By Auto Sunday: Dies Of Broken Neck
Savanna, Ill. – Joseph Hood, 54, night police officer of Savanna, was killed last night when he backed into an automobile driven by Glen Stidenberg, 24, a resident of Savanna. Officer Hood had stepped into the street to warn a passing motorist that one of the headlamps on his car was night lighted and then in stepping backward from the machine was struck by the side of the Stidenberg car. He sustained a broken neck, a deep cut on the forehead and injuries to both knees, which resulted from his being thrown to the pavement. The victim died about a half hour after the accident, which took place on Chicago Avenue, about 11:30 o’clock. The officer apparently did not observe the approaching car, while Mr. Stidenberg was not aware of the fact that Mr. Hood was to step away from the other machine, which had been stopped at the command of the officer.
He was well and favorably known in this vicinity and deep regret was expressed over his untimely death. A jury was impaneled by Coroner J. B. Schreiter. The inquest will not be held for a few days however, as Dr. Schreiter was summoned to Darlington, Wis., owing to the death of his mother.
Mr. Hood was born at Pleasant Valley April 22, 1875. He was united in marriage 30 years ago last September to Miss Gertrude Smith, who survives. There are also three children, Leon Hood of Davenport, Iowa; Mrs. Frank Conley of Savanna; and Miss Dorothy Hood at home. Two grandchildren, three brothers and one sister survive.
For the past five years Mr. Hood had been night police officer in Savanna. Previous to that period he was engaged in blacksmithing here. He had resided in Savanna fourteen years, coming here from Mount Carroll.
