JOHN IKE - of the oldest men in Elkhorn Grove township passed away at his home near Milledgeville, Monday, Oct. 30, 1905. He usually enjoyed very good health for a man of his years and he was seriously ill only about one week. He leaves to mourn the death of a good father, four daughters and one son, Mrs. E. J. Wade who has kept house for him for many years, Mrs. A. M. Baker of Eldora, Ia., Mrs. Almira Matthews and Mrs. L. A. Holly of Polo and George Ike of Ayr, Neb. He is also survived by two brothers and one sister, Isaac Ike of Kenvil, N. J., Herbert Ike of Pennsylvania and Sarah Best of Stanhope, N. J. John Ike was born in Somerset county, N. J., Nov. 5, 1819, and had he lived six days longer he would have reached his eighty-sixth birthday. April 26, 1845 the deceased was married to Margaret Barnes in Wilkesbarre, Pa. and ten years after their marriage they came to Winnebago county Ill., living there for three years. They then moved to Coles county, remaining there nine years and moving February 1867 to Elkhorn Grove, Carroll county where they continued to reside and where Mrs. Ike died April 1, 1891. Mr. Ike was a conscientious well meaning man. He was anxious to treat his neighbors and all with whom he had business dealing, fairly. He was a man who would rather be right and just in his dealings than enjoy financial gain by being dishonest. He was a member of the South Elkhorn M. E. church, at which place funeral services were held, Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock., Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. C. A. Gruber, a former pastor, officiating assisted by Rev. J. W. McKitrick, pastor of the M. E. church in Milledgeville. Burial in the SOuth Elkhorn cemetery.

MARGARET (BARNES) IKE - On the evening of April 1st, occurred the death of Mrs. Margaret Ike, wife of John Ike of Elkhorn Grove. Her maiden name was Barnes. She was born in Wilkesbury, Luzeane(?) Co., Pa., October 3rd 1824. In 1845 she was united in marriage to Mr. John Ike who survives her. In 1856 they came from the East and settled first in Winnebago Co., Illinois. BEULAH V. (KNESS) IMEL , 92, of Mount Carroll died Friday, December 3, 1999 at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Mount Carroll . She was born July 8, 1907 in Chadwick to Edward and Ella (Schreiner) Kness. She married Howard O. Imel in 1923 in Carroll County . In addition to her responsibilities at home, she worked at two restaurants in Mount Carroll over the years. She also worked at Noble’s Grocery Store in Mount Carroll making potato salad. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, embroidering, gardening and planting flowers. Her family was the most important thing to her. Survivors include two daughters, Angelene (Earl) Wernet of Maple, Minnesota, and Kathleen (William) Burch of Lake Lure, North Carolina; four sons, Larry (Janet) Imel of Springdale, Arkansas, Gary (Vicki) Imel of Chadwick, Lyle “Butch” (Linda) Imel of Union Mills, North Carolina, and Ted Imel of Lake Lure, North Carolina; 22 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Wilma Baumgardner of Freeport and three brothers, Robert Kness of California, Charles Kness of Polo, and Merlin Kness of Delmar, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1974; two sons; five sisters, and two brothers. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home in Mount Carroll with the Rev. Brent Todd of the Mount Carroll Church of God officiating. Burial will be at the Fairhaven Cemetery . Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the funeral home. A memorial has been established for the Good Samaritan Nursing Home.

EDGAR LEVI IMEL , 87, of 330 W. 8th St., Milledgeville, died Wednesday, May 1, 1991 at CGH Medial Center in Sterling. He was a retired farmer and a member of Milledgeville Church of the Brethren, Chadwick Masonic Lodge, Freeport Consistory and Carroll County Farm Bureau. Born Sept. 8, 1903 in Chadwick, he was the son of James Riley and Mary (Johnson) Imel. He married Ruth Iler on April 4, 1924 in Freeport. She died June 20, 1977.

Surviving are one niece, Marie Maylor of Milledgeville; five nephews, Don Iler of Milledgeville, who was raised by Mr. Imel, Jim Imel, and Arlyn Bryson, both of Polo, Gary Imel of Chadwick and Lee Bryson of Milledgeville; and special friend, Iona Stengel of Chadwick. Four brothers and two sisters also preceded him in death. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Milledgeville Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Richard Koch officiating. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Allen-Woodin Funeral Home in Milledgeville, where Masonic services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Memorials have been established for the Milledgeville Fire Department and Milledgeville Church of the Brethren.

MARY (JOHNSON) IMEL , passed away suddenly last night at 11 o’clock at her home following a heart attack. Her maiden name was Mary Johnson and she was born August 2, 1857 at Lockhaven , Pennsylvania . She came to Carroll County when a young girl, living in Mt. Carroll, where she was graduated from the high school, later teaching in the rural schools near Mt. Carroll. She was married March 28, 1882 to James Imel, who passed away January 21, 1923. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Oscar Shilling, Freeport , Mrs. Sam Shilling of Milledgeville, and five sons, Roscoe Imel of Morrison, Ward, Everett, Howard, and Edgar Imel of Chadwick. She was a member of the Christian Church of Lanark and the Ramah Chapter of the Eastern Star. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.

MRS. BYRON INMAN - about 29 years, died of pneumonia, at her home in Polo, last Saturday morning. She leaves a husband and a child about fifteen months of age, to mourn her untimely death. The remains were taken to Janesville, Wisconsin, Monday for interment. The deceased was a daughter-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Whitney Inman, of this place.

LEVI INMAN - One of the old residents of the town of Bradford passed away at 10 o'clock Monday night, May 4, in the person of Mr. Levi Inman. A short time ago he suffered from a severe cold but no serious results were looked for until Saturday last when it was evident that he was gradually sinking. Mr. Inman was born in Lucerne Co., Penn., July 12, 1829 and was therefore well on in his seventy-fourth year. On Feb. 3, 1853 he was married to Mary M. Robinson, also of Lucerne Co. During 1859 they came to Wisconsin, settling in the town of Bradford. There were born to Mr. and Mrs. Inman two daughters, Nettie and Lizzie and three sons, Levi F., who died Feb. 12, 1865; Edward, who died Aug. 14, 1897, and Rush. In addition to the widow and children there remains on brother, Whitney, (Wysox, Carroll Co. - 1900 Census) who lives in northern Illinois, and who was present at the funeral. Mr. Inman was highly respected by all who knew him. He was a kind and loving husband and father. He was ever interested in that which made for the welfare of the community and was a steady supporter of the Congregational Church of Emerald Grove. The funeral, conducted by Rev. Wm. Moore, was held at the home in Bradford, Thursday, May 7, and the remains were interred in the Clinton Cemetery. The very large number of friends present, many of whom came from long distances, testified to the esteem in which the deceased was held. The deep sympathy of all is extended to the sorrowing family.

LYDIA E. (BIGBEE) INMAN - On October 23, 1841, Lydia E. Bigbee INMAN was born in the state of Ohio, where the years of her childhood and girlhood were spent. In 1800 she came to Milledgeville, Ill., which proved to be her home during the remaining part of her earthly life. She was united in marriage to Mr. Whitney Inman on October 22, 1862; and to this union five children were born, all of whom survive the parents as follows: Byron, of Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Effie Gault and Mrs. Nelie Robinson, of Milledgeville, Ill., Frank, of Amarillo, Texas, and Mrs. Ruth Durstine, Milledgeville, Ill.

For a number of years Mr. and Mrs. Inman lived on a farm near Milledgeville, but moved to town in 1893. Mr. Inman's death occurred in 1915. Mrs. Inman departed this life May 20, 1917, aged 75 years, 6 months and 28 days. For many years preceding her death she was a faithful member of the Baptist church, and she leaves as a priceless legacy to those who survive her the sacred memories of the virtues and good deeds of a well spent Christian life.

The funeral services were conducted in the home by Rev. Miles J. Snyder, who used as a text for a brief message the word, "I know that Thou wilt bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living." Interment was in Bethel cemetery. Mesdames Maud Schell and Ethel Straka sang appropriate selections, with Mrs. Elizabeth Overholser as piano accompanist. The pallbearers were Messrs. O.M. Meyers, George Olmsted, John Bracken, Frank Snell, D.O. Warehime and W.F. Sunderland.

WHITMAN INMAN - Death has claimed one more of the early settlers of Carroll county. Whitman Inman, youngest son of John and Mary Inman was born near Wilkesbarre [Wilkes-Barre], Pa., March 14, 1838, and died at him home in Milledgeville Saturday morning, June 12, 1915, aged 77 years, 2 months, 28 days. In his boyhood he came to Wysox with his parents. They made the trip from the old home in Pennsylvania to the prairies of Illinois with a team. They arrived here May 10, 1856, and settled on the place now owned by Schell Bros., which John Inman had purchased on a previous visit. He was married to Miss Lydia Bigbee of Knox county, Ohio, Oct. 22, 1862, and she, with two sons and three daughters, remain to mourn his passing; Byron of Chicago, Effie Gault, Nellie Robinson, Ruth Durstine of this place and Frank of Amarillo, Texas. After his marriage be resided upon the farm now occupied by B. F. Puterbaugh, which was a part of the old Inman estate, until he removed to Milledgeville in 1892. he united with the Baptist church many years ago and after that ceased to exist as an organization he attended the Brethren church from which place the funeral services conducted by Rev. Z. T. Livengood were held Tuesday afternoon, and afterwards to the cemetery at South Elkhorn. ( The Sterling Daily Standard, June 17, 1915, page 3, column 6)

Whitney Inman, youngest son of John and Mary Inman, was born at Wilkes Barre, Pa., March 14th, 1838 and died at his home in Milledgeville Saturday morning, June the 12th, 1915 at the age of 77 years, two months and 28 days. He was married to Miss Lydia Bigbee, Oct. 22, 1862. Five children were born to this union, Byron of Chicago, Frank of Amarillo, Texas, Effie Gault, Nellie Robinson and Ruth Durstine of this place. Funeral services were held at the Brethren church Tuesday [06/15/1915] afternoon at 2 o’clock, Rev. Z. T. Livengood officiating. Burial in South Elkhorn cemetery

JAMES H. IRVINE - Funeral services were held this afternoon from the Frank Brothers funeral chapel for Dr. James H. Irvine who died Saturday afternoon in his room in the Hotel Glen View. (Note: this would be April 16, 1938 in Mount Carroll, Illinois.) Burial was made in Oak Hill Cemetery with Masonic rites being conducted. Pall bearers were J. S. Miles, Lewis Browning, George Gibbs, Dr. R. H. Petty, Fred Dana and Fred C. Leigh. Dr. Irvine was born October 18, 1858 in Savanna, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Irvine. When 2 years old he moved here with his parents and resided here until his graduation from dental school, when he went to Omaha, Neb. to practice. Dr. Irvine returned here to live in 1925.

ANNIE LAURIE (WILLIAMSON) IRWIN , daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Williamson was born in Derinda township, Jo Daviess county, Illinois, May 29 1885, where she grew to womanhood and was married to Charles Irwin, Feb. 28, 1907. Of this union were born 5 children, one died in infancy. Those remaing are: Lucille, Lawrence, Marjorie, and Lyle. There remain also two brothers and five sisters, James Williamson of Zion, Ren Williamson of Mt. Carroll, Mrs. Winfield Groves of Ft. Morgan Colorado, Mrs. Ben McGrath of Grand Island, Nebraska, Miss Margaret Williamson, of Savanna, Mrs. Mrs. Elmer Frederick, Mt. Carroll, and Mrs. Robert McGrath, Lanark, her eldest brother J.W. Williamson, having passed to the better land very recently. Mrs. Irwin united with the church early in life, becoming a member of the United Presbyterian church at Zion. since becoming a resident of Mt. Carroll she has attended the Methodist church. Mrs. Irwin passed away at her home in Mount Carroll in the evening of Oct. 5, 1922. The funeral services were held at the home at 10:30 o'clock on Sunday morning where a very large number of relatives and friends gathered to pay respect to one greatly beloved. The floral tributes were very profuse and beautiful. The funeral was very efficiently condusted by Undertaker Holman. The sermon was preached by Rev. Ackerman from 2 Cor. 5-1. She was tenderly laid to rest at Rose Hill (Oak Hill) cemetery to await the call of God in the Resurrection morn.

MARGARET M. (LAW) IRWIN , was born in Washington township, Carroll county, January 27, 1854 and passed to the great beyond, Oct. 18, 1927, aged 73 years, 8 months, and 21 days. She grew to womanhood on the farm known as the old Law homestead. Was united in marriage to David Irwin in the year 1881. They purchased a farm near Zion, Woodland township, where they resided until 1907, when they moved to Mt. Carroll, where they would be nearer their sons. Here they resided until the death of her husband thirteen years ago. Mrs. Irwin retained her home but spent the most of her time with her two sons, until five years ago when Charlie's wife was taken. She then filled the mother's place in his home, caring for the four children, who loved and cherished her by whom she will be greatly missed. Thirty years ago she was converted and joined the Evangelical church at Polsgrove. After moving to Mt. Carroll she transferred her membership to the Methodist church where she was a faithful member. Mrs. Irwin was a wonderful woman. Strong in vitality, having helped care for many in sickness and death, always lending a helping hand, forgetting self to make others happy. The greater part of the year she has been afflicted but she bore her afflictions patiently. Was confined to her bed only a week, passing into a deep sleep from which she never awoke until in the arms of Jesus. Mrs. Irwin leaves to mourn her departure two sons, Bert of Freeport, Ill. and Charles of Mt. Carroll; nine grandchildren; five brothers, Mathew Law of Wacker; Charles Law, George Law and Edward Law, of Savanna; John H. Law, of Colby, Wis. and one sister, Mrs. David Gillogly, of Savanna. ROBERT A. IRWIN , 74, of 610 W. LeFevre Rd., Sterling, died Monday morning (1 April 1957 ) in Methodist Hospital, Madison, Wis., following a short illness. He was born July 19, 1882 in Carroll County, the son of David and Margaret Irwin and was district distributor for the Murphy Products Co., Burlington, Wis., for the past 15 years. Irwin was a member of the Methodist Church for many years. He is survived by his wife, Minnie, at home; two sons, William D. Irwin, Freeport; and Robert G. Irwin, Milwaukee; two daughters, Mrs. E. R. (Dorothy) Chitty, Rockford; and Mrs. R. E. (Margaret) Baarnhart, Cincinnati, Ohio; and eight grandchildren. His first wife, Grace E. Sisler, preceded him in death. Friends may call at the Allen Funeral Home after 7 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. Rev. Paul Bloomquist, pastor of the Embuny Methodist Church of Freeport, will officiate and burial will be in Griggville, Cemetery.

ROBERT G. IRWIN , 71, of Shorewood, Wis., formerly of Freeport, died Thursday morning, April 26, 1990 following a brief illness. He was president and founder of Redevelopment Services, Inc., Milwaukee, Wis., and director of N. D. C. S. division of Schindler Marketing Corp., Milwaukee. He had been active in various civic enterprises, following a career in radio sales and management.

A 1936 graduate of Freeport High School, he attended Illinois Wesleyan University, Bloomington, where he was a member of T. K. E. fraternity. He served as a signal corp officer with the Air Force, for four years during WWII. Born on May 12, 1918 in Mount Carroll, he was the son of Robert A. and Grace E. (Sisler) Irwin. On April 24, 1941 he married Florence Staas, of Freeport, in North Platte, Neb. Survivors include his wife, a daughter, Mrs. Gayle McCoy and three grandchildren, all of Shorewood, Wis; two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy (Robert) Pottle of Sarasota, Fla. and Mrs. Margaret (Robert E.) Barnhart of Wyoming, Ohio; brother, William D. of Freeport. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and brother.

The body was cremated and local arrangements are pending. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Freeport.

MARIE (STEIMAN) ISENBERER :Funeral services for Mrs. Robert (Marie) Isenberger of Lanark, who passed away suddenly Friday of an apparent heart attack, were held Monday at 1:30 p.m. In the Frank Funeral Home at Lanark with Rev. Merle Hawbecker officiating. Mrs. Wayne Derrer was organist.

Caring for the floral tributes were Mrs. Henry Wiersema, Mrs. Ronald Hoover, and Mrs. Ervin Elliott. Pallbearers were Tony Knorr, Delmar Knorr, Ronald Hoover, Henry Wiersema, Dr. Clifford Isenberger, and LaVerne Straub. Burial was in Chapel Hill Cemetery in Freeport.

According to Carroll County Coroner L.B. Hussey, Mrs. Isenberger suffered the heart attack while riding in a car driven by her husband, enroute to her home from Freeport. She was brought to the Shannon Fire Department, but efforts to revive her failed. She was pronounced dead by a Shannon physician.

Marie Charmaine Steiman was born July 18, 1913 in Monroe, Wisconsin, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gottlieb Steiman, She was married to Robert L. Isenberger on June 27, 1964. Mrs. Isenberger was employed by Burgess Battery Co. of Freeport for over 16 years. Surviving are her husband; five sons, Eugene Babler of Beaverton, Oregon, Robert Babler of Monroe, Wisconsin, Charles and James Babler both of Evansville, Wisconsin, and Gary Babler of Williams Bay, Wisconsin; two stepsons, Richard Isenberger of Elgin and David Isenberger of Omaha, Nebraska; 19 grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Ella Rod, and a brother, John Steiman, both of Monroe, Wis.

FLORENCE (EDWARDS) ISENHART , age 91, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois, died Wednesday, September 27, 2006 at Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Mt. Carroll, Illinois. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 2, 2006 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. Burial will be in Oakhill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll. Pastor Robert Phelps, will officiate. Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. –2:00 p.m., one hour prior to service at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home. Memorials may be given in Florence's name for the Good Samaritan Nursing Home and the American Heart Association. Florence was born April 15, 1915, the daughter of Floyd and Anna (Douglas) Edwards in Mt. Carroll, Illinois. Florence graduated from Mt. Carroll High School. She married Arthur Isenhart June 2, 1940 in Mt. Carroll. He died August 7, 1984 in Savanna. Florence and her husband owned and operated a family business in Mt. Carroll, the "Sugar Bowl" Isenhart Confectionary, for forty plus years. Florence was a member of Mt. Carroll Community Club. She enjoyed reading and playing bridge. She was also involved with the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of America. Most of all Florence enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Florence is survived by two sons, Nicholas (Bonnie) Isenhart of Lake Carroll, Illinois and Kim (Heidi) Isenhart of Orlando, Florida; a daughter, Sharon Isenhart of Jacksonville, Florida; five grandchildren, Kevin (Christina) Isenhart, Kelly (Natasha) Isenhart, Eric Isenhart, Olivia Isenhart and Luke Isenhart; and four great-grandchildren, Lauren, Tyler, Andrew and Alexis. GEORGE DELBERT ISENHART , age 81, of Savanna, Illinois, died Friday, November 1, 2008, at Big Meadows Nursing Facility, Savanna. Cremation Rites will be accorded. Private family burial will take place in Grand Detour Cemetery, Grand Detour, Illinois at a later date. George was born on August 20, 1927 in Sterling, Illinois, he was one of twenty-two children born to George D. and Mildred (Shook) Isenhart Sr. He was employed at Lawrence Brothers in Sterling, Illinois as a Janitor for forty-three years. George enjoyed sitting outside, playing his harmonica and waiving at cars as they drove by. He also loved taking long walks, fishing, swimming, and watching old westerns. But most of all he cherished spending time with his friends. George will be dearly missed by one sister, Carol (Dave) Hoge of Mount Carroll, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by twenty brothers and sisters.

IRVIN C. ISGRIG , 73, of Savanna, died (2 Aug 1987) Sunday at Big Meadow Retirement Home. The body was creamated and private family memorial services will be at a later date. A memorial has been established to the Big Meadows Retirement Home in Savanna. Mr. Isgrig was born on Dec. 18, 1908 in Jackson, Minn., the son of Charles and Emma Erikson Isgrig. On April 18, 1937 he was united in marriage to Julia J. Altenbern in Savanna and she preceded him in death on July 17, 1967. Mr. Isgrig was a bulk plant operator for Standard Oil Company for 30 years. He was a member of the Rotary International and a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge. Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Isgrig of Buffalo Grove and Mrs. Ronald (Elizabeth) Payne of Kent, Ohio; two grandchildren; one brother, Erik Isgrig of Oregon. He was preceded in death by his wife and one daughter.

EMERSON G. ISKE , 82, of Lanark died Sunday evening, October 26, 1997 at his home after a short illness. Son of William and Cora (Diehl) Iske, he was born January 14, 1915 on the family farm near Brookville. He and Helen Lego were married November 30, 1940 near Lanark. In 1940 he began farming the family farm which he operated until his retirement after 30 years. He then drove school bus nine years for Lanark schools. From that time to December 1996, he was a model worker for Rolling Hills Progress Center . He was a graduate of Lanark High School and attended Carthage College and the University of Illinois . A member of First Brethren Church at Lanark, he served as moderator and deacon for 32 years. He was an active volunteer for the American Heart Association 15 years, a trustee of Lanark Fire Protection District 18 years, and a charter member of Lanark Lions Club. During the many years he was a Carroll County Farm Bureau member, he served as president 7 ½ years, and from 1957 – 1981 he was a GI instructor for young farmers. In 1994 he received the outstanding citizen award at Lanark’s Old Settlers Day celebration. That same year he was recognized as a Lions of Illinois Foundation Fellow. Iske of Lanark; a daughter, Joanne (Lincoln) Arnold of Freeport; five grandchildren, William (Michelle) Iske of New Berlin, Wisconsin, Christian Arnold of Sandy, Oregon, Renea (Brad) Witt of Lanark, Rebecca Iske of Elkhorn, Wisconsin, and Bethany Arnold of Baraboo, Wisconsin; two great-grandchildren, and his sister, Helen Olson of Portage, Michigan. Preceding him in death were one brother, Albert Iske, and his daughter-in-law, Gretchen Kay Iske. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Brethren Church in Lanark with the Revs. Jim Garrett and Robert Schubert officiating. Burial will be in Lanark Cemetery . Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Russell-Frank Funeral Home in Lanark. In lieu of Flowers, a memorial fund has been established for the American Heart Association, Lanark Fire Department, and First Brethren Church .

GRETCHEN (CARBAUGH) ISKE , 51, of Lanark, homemaker, died Monday September 25, 1995 at Freeport Memorial Hospital. During the last three years she worked at Lake Carroll Clubhouse as a waitress. She was a past member of the Lanark School Board; a member of the Consolidation Committee for the Lanark and Shannon Schools, was a past Parent-Teacher Association member; past member of the Band Boosters and was a former Brownie Leader. She attended First Baptist Church of Mount Carroll and later First Brethren Church of Lanark. She enjoyed reading and playing cards.

Daughter of Max and Frances (Poffenberger) Carbaugh, she was born Aug. 5, 1944 in Savanna and graduated from Mount Carroll High School in 1962. She and Ronald Gene Iske were married Nov. 13, 1965 in Mount Carroll.

Surviving family members include her husband; two daughters, Renee (Bradley) Witt and Rebecca Iske, both of Lanark; one son, William (Michelle) Iske of Milwaukee, Wis.; her parents of Freeport, one brother, Gary (Patricia) Carbaugh of Winnebago; three nieces and two nephews. One brother preceded her in death. Funeral service will be 11:30 a.m. Friday at First Brethren Church with the Rev. Jim Garrett officiating. Burial will be in Lanark Cemetery.
