JAMES LAMBERT - Mrs. Ruth E. Lambert received a telegram Friday a. m. (July 15, 1932) informing her of the death of her grandson James Lambert, son of Albert M. Lambert, Harvey, Illinois. (I’m assuming this death occurred July 14, 1932.) James and wife were crossing the tracks at Hammond, Indiana when they were struck by a NY Central passenger train. They were unable to see the approaching train on account of the flood lights in the railroad yards blinding them. James was instantly killed and his wife seriously injured. Mrs. Lambert was rushed to the hospital in Hammond, Indiana and is in a dangerous condition. Elmer Bashaw and his wife attended the funeral held at Harvey Saturday afternoon. James and his parents lived here one winter about 11 years ago.

JOHN LAMBERT - Life's Long Pilgrimage Ended. Died at the Age of 82 - One of Carroll county's oldest residents, both in point of age and length of citizenship has answered the great call. John Lambert died at his home in East Carroll at 11 o'clock on Wednesday night, August 28, 1901. His age was 82 years, 3 months and 3 days. Mr. Lambert's residence in Carroll County dates from 1850. For fifty years he had lived here, coming when the country was sparsely settled, living an active life and by his thrift and influence assisting to make his surroundings what they now are. He was an Englishman by birth, having been born in Yorkshire May 25, 1819. He lived in his native land twenty-three years and came to America in 1842. The first twelve years of life on American soil was spent in Pennsylvania, where he engaged in coal mining. Coming to this county he entered forty acres of land from the government. As an example of the prevailing prices in those days, it is recorded that he sold two-thirds of sixteen acres of corn for $16, and two cows and two fat hogs for $25. This was in the winter of '50. Mr. Lambert was a hard worker, careful in his management, and finally became the owner of a farm of 113 acres, in this township. Retiring seven years ago, he purchased property in East Carroll, in which house he died. (Note: East Carroll was another name for the eastern part of Mount Carroll, Illinois.) The decedent was a man of influence and was always highly regarded. Although not striving for public honors, he served twelve years as school director and for eight years was path master. About a year ago his extreme age began telling on him, and a few weeks ago he was brought down to his bed. From that time until his death the decline was gradual. Life's machinery ceased to operate longer, and quietly the curtain between life and death was drawn. He had gone to join the companion of many years, who but a few weeks ago preceded him to the tomb. Mr. Lambert was married to Mary Watson, from England, November 3, 1842. Their children number eight. Five are living, as follows: Mrs. S. F. Graves, Savanna; Mrs. J. D. Wolfley, Lanark; Mrs. Crouse, Iowa; Miss Nora, of this city; John of Savanna. Mr. Lambert years ago joined the Methodist church. He lived a life of honor and integrity and will be rewarded in the life to come. The funeral will be held at the M. E. church Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock friends to gather at the house at 1:30. Rev. J. M. Phelps will officiate. The remains will be laid beside of the wife whose grave is yet fresh.
::Another clip from that paper - The funeral of John Lambert will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, at the M. E. church, Rev. J. M. Phelps officiating. In the obituary published in yesterday's Mirror our informant was mistaken in giving the list of surviving children. They are: Mrs. Levi Crouse, Perry, Iowa, Mrs. George Fritz, LaPorte City, Iowa, Mrs. J. D. Wolfley, Lanark, Mrs. George F. Bickelhaupt, Mt. Carroll, Mrs. C. D. Wolf, Mt. Carroll, Mrs. Samuel Graves, Savanna, and Nora L. Lambert, Mt. Carroll.
:: Another clip from that paper - FUNERAL OF JOHN LAMBERT - The funeral of John Lambert was held at the M. E. church Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Friends from both the city and country gathered to a large number to attend the sad services over one who had for a great many years been associated with the community's best interests. Rev. J. M. Phelps delivered a good discourse, appropriate to the removal of an esteemed citizen. A picked choir rendered beautiful music. The remains of the aged man were tearfully laid away in Oak Hill Cemetery, to repose beside those of the companion who but a few weeks ago was called to eternal rest.
Another clip - The funeral of the late John Lambert was held from the Methodist church yesterday afternoon and was largely attended. Rev. J. M. Phelps delivered a splendid funeral discourse, one fitting to the character of the deceased. The pall bearers were: Oliver Swartz, Jacob Hartman, Charles Phillips, N. H. Melendy, Charles Welch and Elh. Fisher, all gentlemen who have passed the three score and ten mark in life. There were twenty odd carriages and buggies in the funeral cortege as it passed through our streets.

Mr. and Mrs. John Lambert lived in Pennsylvania the first twelve years of their home in America, he working in the coal mines. They came to Carroll County in 1850, and took up land in Mount Carroll Township where their home has since continued among our oldest and most respected citizen. Since their retirement from the active duties of farm live, they have made their home in this city. For several months the two old people have both been under severe affliction. Carefully and tenderly nursed by their loving daughter Nora, aided as much as possible by the other daughters, who with families of their own, have done all that affection would suggest for their aged parents. The venerable old father is now – while his faithful wife has passed over – just lingering on the banks of the mystic river, the spirit flickering as a light in the socket, liable to go out at any moment, and ere the mortal remains of the wife are laid away in the silent tomb, the spirit of the husband and father may have taken its everlasting departure. The funeral of Mrs. Lambert will be held tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon at 2 o’clock from the M. E. church, Rev. J. M. Phelps will conduct the ceremonies. Burial will be made in Oak Hill Cemetery immediately after the services in the church. Then they came to the west and located in Carroll County near Hickory Grove on the old home, where they lived for about 41 years. About 7 years ago they left the farm and located in Mount Carroll to spend the remaining days of their lives. Mrs. Lambert lived to reach the age of 81 years, 1 month and 21 days. She sat down on the porch a few minutes, and when Mrs. Welty assisted her to her bed, where she remarked that she always wanted to go home from this world suddenly, and thought now her time had come, and immediately died. Drs. Greeley and Shimer were called in, but she had passed away before either arrived. Disease of the heart was the cause of her death. She was born in Wensleydale, England and was about 74 years of age at the time of her death. She leaves to mourn her departure an aged and infirm husband and four children. Mrs. Lambert was a member of the M. E, church, this city, and a very devoted Christian woman, living in the constant expectation of a bright home over on the other shore. Rev. Geo. B. THOMAS LAMBERT - Died, at Thomson, Monday, April 11, 1892, Mr. Thomas Lambert, aged 75 years and 7 months. He was born in Yorkshire, England and came to America in 1840, and located near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, working on a coal mine until 1842, when he came to Carroll County and secured some Government land and became a prosperous farmer. He was married three times, and was the father of eight children, four of whom are still living. His health has been impaired for some time, which coupled with old age, made his death expected. He was a conscientious citizen and a good neighbor. His religious sentiments inclined him toward the M. E. church, but we do not know that he was a member of any church. He was moral in all his habits and honest with his fellow men. His remains were brought to Mount Carroll on Wednesday and appropriate religious services were held in the M. E. church after which he was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery beside his wife, who passed away some time ago. His children have the sympathy of the friends and neighbors. ( Weekly Journal, Savanna, Illinois Thursday, April 21, 1892)

Alice Horner’s notes: This information will correct the discrepancies between the two obituaries. He was born September 11, 1816 in Yorkshire, England, and therefore 75 years old when he died April 11, 1892. He was married three times.
1. Ellen Lodge on December 21, 1837 in Yorkshire, England. She died there in 1838.
2. Rosamond Watson on December 10, 1839 in Yorkshire, England.
3. Mrs. Eliza Dyson in the fall of 1891. I have been unable to find her maiden name, but I did find her name as Eliza Dyson in Thomas Lambert’s probate records in the Carroll County, Illinois courthouse website, which also shows the marriage taking place sometime in December 1891.

Elsie became the bride of Axel Larsen on July 12, 1934, after meeting at a PTA meeting in Brookville, Illinois. Axel and Elsie eventually settled on their farm, south of Savanna on Scenic Bluff Road, to farm and raise their family. Together they had six daughters and one son. Elsie was always the homemaker and enjoyed every minute of doing it, providing for her children, and later on, the grandkids. Cooking and canning were an important part of living and providing for her family throughout the year. Lots of vegetables and fruits lined her shelves, as well as the favorite topping for her pancakes- Jelly. Every child and grandchild will remember all of the breakfast meals that included her thin pancakes that were rolled up and smothered with homemade jelly. Although she was considered the disciplinarian of her family, she didn’t have to tender the responsibility too often. She was a crafts person at letting her kids develop their own sense of worth and where they fit in around the farm and around their daily lives at work and school. Everyone took on their fair share of the responsibilities according to their interests and everything got done. She also loved to attend “Club” meetings once a month. ANNIE (LEE) LENHART - At her home near Shannon Monday April 11, 1898, Mrs. John E. Lenhart at the age of 25 years, 1 month and 20 days. Annie B. Lee was born in Whiteside county, Ill., Feb. 21,1873. She was the daughter of James A. and Amanda A. Lee, being the third child of a family of eight children. On the 7th day of September 1893, she was united in marriage with John E. Lenhart. Three children, two daughters and a son, came to bless their union, all of whom preceded her to the spirit land. During the pastorage of Rev. A. C. Gruber in Milledgeville she accepted Christ as her Savior and united with the Methodist church in this city, and remained a member of that church until her death. The end was very sudden. A short time before she became sick she appeared quite cheerful and happy, but soon was very ill and in a short time was cold in death. There are left behind a loving husband, a mother, two brothers, three sisters and a large circle of friends to mourn her early death. But we that mourn let us be comforted in the fact that, all things that are, are for the best and that thought the affliction is bitter He hath but taken His own. The funeral services were held of Wednesday forenoon in the M. E. church in this city, Rev. Bender, of Coleta, officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the Bethel cemetery.

She was never a very strong child, but she seemed to be as well as usual until Saturday afternoon, August 29, when she was suddenly taken ill and in a few short hours passed away.

DAVID LEONARD - Died in the Cherry Grove, Carroll co., Ills. Feb. 19th, (1864) brother DAVID LEONARD; age 17 years, 4 months and 25 days. His sickness lasted but about twelve days, and his case was a singular one. I was to see him a few days after he was taken sick, and I spoke to him about the goodness of God and the hope of them that trusted in him. He manifested pleasant feeling, and thought if he would die he would go to heaven. He then sent for me again and expressed a warm desire to be baptized. I told him that the brethren sometimes receive persons in the sickness as candidates for baptism upon their promise to be baptized when they get well enough to have it done. But he seemed to be dissatisfied and said with considerable strength of voice, "It reads, He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved." This was enough for me and in a short time preparations were made and he was carried to the water and baptized without any difficulty, whatever, on either his part or mine. I think I never saw a baptism more easily performed. And from that time he seemed to be entirely composed, and the second day after, he reached out the farewell hand in a happy state of mind to all that were present. It was a solemn and tender time, and almost all present promised that they would serve the Lord. All who witnessed the solemn occasion will not soon forget it. Funeral services by the writer and others, from 1 Cor. 15: 22. John Sprogle.
