WILMER W. McGARTH - A verdict of death caused by a severe head injury, shock and exposure, was returned Saturday afternoon by a coroner’s jury which conducted the investigation of the death of Dr. Wilmer W. McGrath, 67 year old Savanna physician, whose body was found in a roadside ditch that morning near the Mosquito Hill school house about eight miles north of Savanna. (January 8, 1937) Ferdinand Grimm, Savanna rural mail carrier, discovered the body about 9 o’clock Saturday morning and immediately notified Savanna authorities. Grimm and Sylvester Alden, Savanna agent for an oil company, who arrived on the scene a few minutes later, said that McGrath’s car skidded into a ditch alongside the road. He had driven along the ditch for some distance but was unable to get back into the road. Apparently he had then started to walk to a nearby farm house of George Elliot but slipped and fell on the icy road, severely injuring his head. Alden said a trail of blood indicated the doctor then attempted to return to his car but had not reached it. Just what time the accident occurred was not certain but it was reported that the physician left on a professional call at about nine o’clock Friday night, visited the patient and returning to Savanna at the time of the tragedy. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Savanna Methodist Church and burial was made in the Savanna Cemetery . Dr. McGrath was born near Derinda Center and had practiced his profession in Savanna for 40 years. He is survived by his widow, the former Etta La Vergne of Savanna, a son, Dr. Floyd McGrath of Wilmette , a daughter, Mrs. C. B. Summers of Kansas City, and two grandchildren

JOHN MEAKINS , one of Coleta’s oldest citizens died Wednesday [03/13/1901] evening at 7 o’clock, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R. S. Lawrence, in that village. His death was due to old age, he being ninety-one years old, and the remarkable circumstance connected with his death was the suddenness of his breaking down. He was in the habit of sawing wood every day for exercise, and on the day of his death he was able to walk to the table and eat his dinner. The funeral was held from the Liberal [United Brethren] church in Coleta this morning at 11 o’clock, the Rev. J. Groff officiating.\ Rev. Groff was assisted by the other Coleta ministers, Reverends L. E. Denins, E. Y. Pinlmey and L. C. McKim. Interment took place in the Bethel cemetery. Charles Lawrence of Batavia and Nathan Logue of Morrison attended the funeral. John Meakins was born in Haden, England, January 10, 1810, and immigrated to this country In 1831, moving to Ithica [Ithaca], N. Y. He moved to Oswego, N. Y., in 1834 where he was married to Miss Eliza Archer. Three children were born to this union, John T. aged sixty two and Mrs. R. S. Lawrence aged fifty, both residing in Coleta, and George who died at the age of twelve. His wife died in 1874 and was buried at the side of her son in the Bethel cemetery near Milledgeville. The family moved to Carroll county, Illinois, in 1840 and in 1871 moved to Coleta. From 1882 to 1890 Mr. Meakins lived with his daughter in Wessington, South Dakota. He lived a consistent Christian life for sixty-five years, having been baptized in the Oswego river shortly after coming to the United States. Among the useful deeds of his life was the building of the old Hazel Green school, the logs for which he hauled and did more than any other to rear into the building. He was an honest, earnest Christian gentleman, and he leaves behind many who will keep his memory green as long as they respect the sturdy, wholesome attributes that made him what he was. Coleta has still a living example of the hardy, upright character of the best men of the past generation, in Uncle James Winters, who will be ninety-two years of age March 21.
