WALTER MARSH
- Former Freeport Police Chief Walter Marsh died suddenly Monday evening, March 22, 1977, at his home at 968 S. Arcade Avenue. A decorated veteran of World War I, Marsh served 17 years as chief from 1942-1959 and was on the police force for 27 years. On learning this morning of Marsh’s death, a former colleague of Marsh’s, Assistant Police Chief Willard “Curley” Robbins said “He was a policeman’s policeman. I don’t think I ever worked under a man I respected more.” Robbins was a rookie on the force the last six years of Marsh’s regime. “The job was foremost in his (Marsh’s) mind, but at the same time he was behind his men,” Robbins said. “His integrity was unreproachable.” Police Chief Gerald Brookman, who also served under Marsh, said “he was a good officer to work under and a tough officer. He had dedication to the police field.”
The Marsh family ties with city law enforcement were carried on by Marsh’s son, Earl, who was on the police department for 26 years, the last six as chief before retiring in 1972. Walter Marsh’s career as a policeman had a hairy start in 1932 when he was wounded while taking a safe cracker at Union Dairy into custody. Marsh surprised the man in the act of the crime and was starting to escort the man back to the police station when the burglar pulled a hidden gun and fired at Marsh at point blank range. Although taking a blast through the left shoulder, Marsh was able to pursue the fleeing gunman, firing several shots and taking a bullet through the chest in return.
Marsh served many years as an adult probation officer with the Stephenson County Probation Department after retiring as chief. He was a lifetime member of the Policemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association of Illinois. In 1961 he was an unsuccessful candidate for mayor, and he once ran for sheriff.
During World War I service in France, Marsh served with the 362nd Infantry during some of the fiercest fighting in 1918. He was decorated with a Distinguished Service Cross by Gen. John J. Pershing, received two French Croix de Guerre for extraordinary service in action, and the Purple Heart. Very active in veterans organizations he was a member and past commander of the World War I Barracks and a past commander of the Moseley-Loewe VFW post in Freeport. Walter L. Marsh was born August 28, 1895 in Lanark, a son of Frank and Ida (Horner) Marsh. He married Iva Coon on November 10, 1921 in Freeport. Survivors include his widow, of Freeport; four sons, Earl, Vernon, and John, all of Freeport, and Kenneth of Sterling; four daughters, Mrs. Doris Carpenter and Mrs. Betty Hofmaster, both of Freeport, Mrs. Sam (Joan) Busemi of Rockford, and Mrs. Joyce Jegerlehner of Janesville, Wisconsn; 31 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Martha Voss of Freeport. His parents, a sister, two grandchildren, and his step-father preceded him in death.
ANNA MAY MERCHANT
, was born in Hickory Grove, Carroll County, Illinois May 19, 1873 and was transitioned at the same time as her mother, July 4, 1898, aged 25 years, 1 month 15 days. All of her beautiful life was spent in our midst. It is a beautiful tribute to her own character as well as that of her home influence, that in early life she gave her heart to her maker’s, Christ, and has ever since followed in his footsteps. She united with the Methodist Episcopal Church at Hickory Gove, and has been an earnest worker in the Lord’s Kingdom. At the time of her departure, she was secretary of the Sunday School. She was one of the true and tried, and cheerfully responded to every call of duty. She delighted to be an errand bearer for Christ.
She will be greatly missed in the home, in society, in the Sunday school and in the church. She was intending to go to Chicago this fall to study for a trained nurse, but the Savior whom she loved and trusted had employment for her in heaven. A few hours before her transition she sang very earnestly and as it proved, prophetically.
The funeral services of mother and daughter were held at the Hickory Grove M. E. Church July 6, 1898, conducted by the pastor Rev. J. M. Phelps. The church was crowded and scores of people were unable to gain admission. The Fuller quartette of Savanna furnished music. The floral arrangements were beautiful and rich. Six of May’s young lady friends acted as pallbearers. The remains were laid side by side in the Hickory Grove Cemetery.
The bereaved family have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community. May the God of grace minister unto them richly of his love and Grace. May they by faith in Jesus hear their sainted loved ones say in the spirit of the Gospel. We live, O ye that loved us.

HARVEY E. MOLL
son of Mr. and Mrs. David S. Moll was born at Shannon, Illinois, March 12, 1896 and died at the home of his parents Tuesday, November 23, 1915, after a prolonged illness of a complication of diseases, chiefly of the heart, at the premature age of 19 years, 8 month, and 11 days.
Harvey leaves to mourn his untimely death his fond but saddened parents, a twin brother, Charles H., two younger brothers, David Roy and George Ray, besides a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, and grandparents, all of whom reside within the immediate vicinity of Shannon.
The deceased leaves as his most comforting dying testimony the fact that he was thoroughly converted to God on Friday night, January 5, 1911, under the ministry of the Rev. J. F. Van Evera, under whom also he immediately afterward united with Bethel church where he has led a consistent and commendable Christian life. Harvey often expressed the regret during the two months or more of confinement to his home, that he was not able to attend the services of the church and to assist in the work of excavating the new basement. The last service which he attended was the latest communion service in which he participated with much physical difficulty, but with much joy.
He was a patient sufferer, not fearing to die, but having an ardent desire to live and make something of himself in life. But he died with a prayer upon his lips.
The services were held from the home and from Bethel church, Rev. J. F. Van Evera of Highland Park officiating, assisted by the pastor Rev. J. W. Davis, Friday afternoon, November 26, interment being made in the Brethren cemetery in this city.
The pall bearers were members of Harvey's Sunday school class, as follows: Henry, Herman, and William Fuch, Raymond Parker, and Henry Salier.
The singing at the home was rendered by the Fisher sisters, Mesdames Mattes and Adams. At the church the young people's choir sang three beautiful selections.
To the bereaved family we join a multitude of friends in expressing sincerest sympathy in the death of an obedient son and brother.
