JANE (FARQUHAR) NIPE
- Christopher Nipe was probably the son of Johannes Christopher Neip and Anna Mary Connors (?). He was born at Schaefferstown, PA Oct. 31, 1783[1]. We believe that Christopher moved first to Hagerstown, MD, then possibly to Frederick Co., MD. His brother, John George Nipe, relocated to Williamsport, MD about the same time. Christopher subsequently moved back to Hagerstown, and later to Boonsboro where he died.
Christopher (or Christian) Nipe married Jane Farquhar, probably the daughter of Robert and Mary McCoy Farquhar, in Hagerstown on March 27, 1826. They had moved to Boonsboro, MD by 1836. Christopher died, probably in Boonsboro, between 1840 and 1846.
Jane moved to Mt. Carroll, Carroll Co., IL in 1846 with her six children. The oldest son, George Washington, was about nineteen years old and probably assumed the duties of head of household. They possibly came with a group from Washington Co., MD. The area had been settled largely by people from Washington Co. about a decade earlier. Jane died August 6, 1869 and was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll, IL.
All evidence indicates that Christopher Nipe was the son of Johannes Christopher Neip and Anna Mary Connors(?) of Schaefferstown, PA[2] . The only conflict was in the difference between his birth date which was given as Oct. 31, 1783 in the church records and his age range given in the census which was about ten years younger.
Christopher was born in Pennsylvania according to the information provided by his daughter Martha M. Nipe Renner in the 1900 census. There was a Christopher Nipe in Hagerstown MD by Oct. 2, 1821, as there were letters in the post office (from George Newkirk and Samuel Newman) for him[3]. He was certainly in Hagerstown by March 27, 1826 as he was married to Jane Farquhar in St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hagerstown[4]. Jane Farquhar Nipe's death certificate listed her maiden name as "Forker" and Mary Jane Nipe Sisler, daughter of Christopher and Jane, gave the names of her father and mother as Christopher and Jane Nipe in the biography of her husband, Daniel Sisler[5].
Christopher and Jane were probably living in or near Hagerstown in Mar. 9, 1827 as the birth of their first child, George Washington, was recorded there[6]. On April 28, 1834, Christopher was in Frederick Co. for he sold household materials to Jacob Poffenberger. They were probably living in Boonsboro, MD as early as 1836[7] (Jane was a member of the Boonsboro
