ELLEN (MILLER) PAYNTER - At the home of her sister, Mrs. Steffens, a few miles east of Milledgeville, Thursday morning, May 21, 1896, Mrs. Elizabeth Paynter, at the age of 75 years, 3 months and 27 days. HIRAM ALLEN PAYNTER was born in Litchfield County Conn., Feb.6, 1820. Died Ja. 10, 1895 aged 74 years, 17 mos., and 4 days. Mr. Paynter came to Ogle Co., Ill., in 1836 and in 1837 removed to Elkhorn Grove, Carroll Co. On November 3, 1842 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Miller, of Canada. They began housekeeping at his late residence and have always resided here during their 52 years of married life. Mr. Paynter was converted and united with the M.E. Class of this place in 1846. Since that time, he has done his utmost to live a faithful and conscientious christian life and he certainly has succeeded, as can be testified by his large circle of friends. The funeral services were held at the South Elkhorn Church, January 13, at eleven o'clock, Rev. F.l. Baldwin officiating. A large concourse of friends gathered to show their estimation for their old friend and neighbor, who had lived among them so many years, and who had always been a friend to them, in the truest sense of the word. (Burial was at South Elkhorn cemetery).
In Memoriam - The subject of this sketch, Hiram Allen Paynter, was born in Litchfield County, Conn., on the sixth day of February, 1820; and died at his home, near Milledgeville, Ill., January 10, 1895; his age at the time of his death being 74 years, 11 months and 4 days. Having accepted Christ at the age of twenty-five he united with the M. E. Church, and has always remained a firm adherent of the faith. His life was upright and consistent, and through the merits of Christ, he has gained an abundant entrance into the "Haven of Eternal Rest." For some time his health had been failing, but he attended to his usual duties until the last, being faithful in "that which is least." to those who loved him, it is a source of much comfort to know, that the last stage of the journey, though fraught with much pain, was, mercifully, short. After a few hours of intense suffering, he fell into a peaceful sleep, from which he passed over the river, so silently, that those who were watching, hardly knew when the end came. He closed his eyes on earth to open them in heaven. "Like a shock of corn, fully ripe," he has been garnered into the treasure house of God," A home not made with hands, eternal in the heavens." The look of care has faded from the face we loved so well, the toll worn hands are folded, and the weary feet have touched the steps of the Golden Stair, his ear hath caught the strains of heavenly music, and rest cometh soothingly sweet. Coming to this state in an early day, 1836, and living for so many years in one place, he had become almost as much a part of that place as the various features of the landscape, and being a peaceable citizen, a kind and obliging neighbor, his removal cannot fall to make a deep impression on the entire community. On the third of November, 1842, he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Miller, of Canada. There has never been any lack of love, and pleasure in the lives and home of this couple, and many loving hearts, no longer young, still cherish memories of the happy days, spent at Uncle Hiram's, where genial smiles and a warm welcome awaited them. For more than half a century, this couple have been traveling life's journey together. Time has cemented their wedded loves and sympathies, and now at a fork in the road, the faithful wife is left to journey on alone for a little time, knowing that the road leads to where the loved one is safely sheltered, from the storms of this life, in the "Paradise of God." Let the tear fall now for the one who walks in the shadows of bereavement; that pathway is a lonely one, the sunshine of sympathy is very helpful. With becoming reverence we accept our loss, trusting in God for "He doeth all things well." Friend

With exception of time spent in the army during the World War he has resided in York, but his army life was productive of many encounters of which Floyd never spoke, yet gave him one of the best soldier records in Carroll County.
Obituary

Floyd attended the schools of this place, until arriving at man's estate, when he followed the vocation of a farmer, which vocation he followed until the time of his enlistment in the service of his country during the Great World War. On his return he again took up farming, and continued this work until the time he was stricken with what proved to be a fatal illness. He was assigned to Company D 132nd Infantry. 33rd Division. and detailed to Camp Grant for training. In April of the following year he was transferred to Camp Houston for final training. In May he was sent across the ocean for over-seas duty, landing on the Brest of France on Decoration Day. He was in every major offense during the time he was in Europe and saw action in the Amiens sector, at Verdun in the Meuse offensive at Troyon and at St. Mihiel. After the signing of the Armistice he was made a member of the Army of Occupation, and served in that division from Dec 12, 1918 to April 12, 1919, at which time he was ordered home. He was honorably discharged from the service on May 30, 1919, after having served his country in a fashion that brought great honor upon himself and the members of his family. During the time he was action in France, Mr. Potter went over the top four times, was gassed and spent time in the hospital. He never fully recovered from the effects of the gas, and a severe cold, with the lung weakness brought about his death. He was a member of the Van-Bibber-Hanson Post of the American Legion, and his war-time comrades will have charge of the funeral services at which Mr. Potter will be accorded full military honors. The casket, which will be draped with the military flag, that token of Democracy for which he gave so many months of his life in a most cheerful manner, will be escorted by a guard of honor in full uniform from the Savanna Legion Post. Chaplin Earl Engelking will have charge of the military rites at the grave, where the comrades of the man who has departed for that place where peace is everlasting, will pay their last earthly respects to a brave comrade.
