LUCY A. (BRUBAKER) PAYNE , was born in Berreman Township, Jo Daviess County, Illinois, September 13, 1850 and departed from the scenes of this earthly life at Shannon, Illinois, on Thursday forenoon March 2, 1922, at the age of 71 years, 5 months, and 19 days. Her early life was spent in the parental home at the place of her birth, where she attended the public school and also the Sunday school of the Methodist church at Willow. In 1867, she was united in marriage to David Payne, with whom she shared life's joys and sorrows for fifty-four years. In 1917, they had the rare privilege of celebrating their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Soon after their marriage ,they located in Spring Valley, where they remained until 1896, when they decided to retire from the activities of the farm and spend their declining years in Shannon. Mr Payne died November 29, 1920. Three children were born unto them, all of whom survive. They are James W. Payne, William H. Payne and Ora Belle Payne. There also remain two grandchildren and one great grandchild ,which was born only a few days before the great grandmother passed away. Mrs. Payne also leaves one sister, Mrs. Isabelle Clarke and one brother, Hiram Brubaker, both of Winslow, Illinois. After her marriage, Mrs. Payne attended the Spring Valley Sunday school and church services and when the family located in Shannon , she attended the Bethel Sunday school and was a regular attendant and when her physical condition did not permit her to attend any longer she became a member of the home department of the shool. She was a charter member of the Woman's Relief Corps and remained an active member until the organization disbanded. The departed was a patient suffered for a decade, but soon after her husband's death her ailments became more critical, confining her to her home most of the time. Hardly three weeks ago there was a serious development in her ailment, which caused her to remain in bed. She was willing to live and ready to die. She was a good woman, kind, affectionate, loyal and devoted. The home and the neighborhood will be lonesome without her. She will be missed. Her death makes a vanacy that can never be filled. She is not her, but is risen. "For her the long long night is past, the morning comes at last" The funeral services were held on Sunday aftersoon at Bethel Evangical church and were largely attended. The were conduced by Rev. Henry Baum and Rev. J. G. Finkbeiner.

CONRAD PETERS was called hence from this earth life by the messenger of death Saturday morning May 12th, 1923, at six o’clock, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Lamoreux, where he was making his home at this time. With the rising of the “Queen of the Day”, his life’s sun went down to rise on the other side, there to shine forever. Father Peters was born in Sellenroth, Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, January 21, 1829, where he grew up to manhood. He was united in holy wedlock to Miss Katherine Rister on March first, 1854, who as a faithful companion walked by his side till she was removed by the icy hand of death on the 12th of August, 1899. Son after their marriage, in the same year, they left their native fatherland and together with his mother, brothers and sisters, came to this country and located in this community, where he has since resided, and was the second oldest person in Carroll County when he died. To this happy union ten children were born, of whom eight are living. One son died in infancy, and Conrad in prime of manhood at the age of forty-one years. The children living are George and Henry, of Lanark; John, of this community; Edward, of Waterloo, Iowa; Katherine, Mrs. F. J. Goble, of near Milledgeville; Lizzie, Mrs. W. J. Lamoreux, of this community; Mary, Mrs. John Shildwahter, of Lanark; and Adelaide, Mrs. Henry Scharman, of Shannon. There are also twenty grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild, by whom he will be greatly missed. Mr. Peters was a successful farmer, strictly honest in his dealings with his neighbors, and by earnest toil and economy he became the owner of fine farm property. Since the death of his good wife, he made his home with his children who kindly and tenderly cared for him. He was happy to know that he was always welcome in all of their homes. In his parental home he received a good Christian training and confirmed in the Lutheran church at the age of fourteen years. Since then he has held membership in that and the Evangelical church respectively. In the later years and months of his life he often expressed a desire to go home to God, assuring his loved ones that he was ready to go and be with Jesus his Savior. His end was peace. He reached the age of 94 years, 3 months, and 21 days. The funeral services were held on Tuesday at 1 p.m., from his late home and at 2 o’clock from the Trinity Evangelical church; and his mortal body was laid to rest beside his wife in the cemetery near the church. The following grandsons served as pall bearers: Howard Goble, Harry Shildwahter, Howard Peters, Ralph Lamoreux, Robert Peters, and William Peters. Flower bearers were: Mrs. Lillie Deets, Mrs. Hattie Livengood, Mrs. Maude Cheeseman, Mrs. Carrie Diffenderfer, Mrs. Verna Barnes. The music was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Garman, of Brookville, who sang several beautiful selections, and Mrs. Albert Cashman who presided at the organ. The services were in charge of Rev. J. H. Johnson of Ashton, Ill., a former pastor of Brookville, who spoke from the text, Psalms 91: 16. He was ably assisted by Revs. Z. T. Livengood and N. H. Willison.

CONRAD PETERS JR. - On February 3d, 1900 the redeemed spirit of Conrad Peters Jr. took its flight to the eternal abode of God’s children. He was born in Carroll county, Ill., August 11, 1857, his age therefore being 42 years, 5 mo. And 28 days. On March 28, 1882 he was married to Miss Katherine Hanse, his now sorrowing widow; to this union God gave one son who died in infancy. During a special meeting held at Maple Grove school house some three years ago, he with others gave his heart and service for time and ternity to God, and he became a member of the United Evangelical church of which he remained a faithful member until his death. His jovial disposition, his kindly spirit made him a favorite among the young people and won for him a large circle of friends and admirers, and yet amid all this gaiety he never sacrificed his dignity as a Christian. To know him was to love him. As a neighbor he was obliging and self sacrificing. Nothing was too kind for him to do. To alleviate all suffering and sickness, and with utter forgetfullness of self he ministered to comfort of those around him. The service of the Lord was a delight. Nowhere did he feel as much at home as in the sanctuary of the Lord. Worshipful in song, prayer testimony. No trifling things kept him away from prayer or public worship. He was an attentive listener and applied the truth of God’s word to his own heart and life. That which gave peculiar emphasis to his testimony was his conscientiousness and consistent Christian life almost to close of life. In song, he loved to sing those blessed hymns which had cheered his drooping spirit, relieved his soul and had driven away feelings of dispair that would seem to creep over him because of his continued suffering and his confinement to his home. For three long years he has been a sufferer more or less, and yet amid all, he bore up bravely and never murmured or complained. In his death the church and Sunday school have lost a faithful and consistent member, he being treasurer of the Sunday school for nearly four years; the community a faithful citizen, and his wife an affectionate companion. He leaves to mourn his untimely departure a wife, a father, four brothers and four sisters. Funeral services were held in the Maple Grove United Evangelical church, conducted by Pastor H. H. Moser, assisted by Rev. D. Rowland and Rev. J. W. Michael.

For three years he was the treasurer of the Sunday School and was very faithful in attendance. Of late he expressed deep regret that advancing age and infirmities had denied him this privilege. He was active in community affairs, having been an officer of both local telephone and insurance companies. He served as highway commissioner for a number of years. He has the respect of the entire community for his kindness and good will to all. An able man has passed from among us, one of ripe wisdom and full of years. The funeral was held at the First Brethren church, in charge of the pastor, Rev. G. T. Ronk. Six nephews acted as pallbearers -- Howard Goble, Ralph Lamoreux, Robert Peters, Harry Shildwahter, Harrison Barnes, and Ray Deets. MARY (SNOVEL) PETERS , was born at Schuylkill, Penn. February 22, 1840 and died at Lanark December 25, 1906. She was 66 years, 10 months and 3 days old. She came to Carroll County, Illinois with her parents at the age of nine years and lived near Brookville. She was married to John Peters, March 3, 1863, at Mt. Carroll, Illinois. Their early married life was spent in Elkhorn Grove near Freemont. They moved to Freedom Township in 1884 and continued to reside there until one year after the death of the husband when the family moved to Lanark where she resided until the time of her departure. To this union were born seven children, namely: Reuben, Frank, Melinda (Bowman) John, Albert, Laura and Edward. Two daughters from Mr. Peters’ first marriage remain to mourn over the departure of Mrs. Peters, Mrs. Della Shaffer and Kate Kline. The illness of sister Peters dates back near the time of the death of her husband which was a severe stroke upon her physical condition. Judging from her sorrows, the deceased must have lived very happily with her husband as the separation seemed to rob her of much of her former hope and ambition. The sickness was long and severe. Many times did the family think the end had come but good care and able medicinal aid would rally her again and brighten future hope. Sister Peters was strongly attached to her family, and her greatest care was their comfort. She was a member of the Evangelical Church and loved and trusted her Savior to the end. The deceased leaves to mourn over her departure, besides her children, five brothers: John, George, and Columbus Snovel, of Lanark; Nelson of Grundy Center, Iowa; and Marcus of North Dakota; also two sisters, Mrs. Peter Brown of Milledgeville and Mrs. Bowers of Iowa. The funeral was held at the Progressive Church today (Thursday) at 1:30, Rev. Z. T. Livengood officiating. Internment in Lanark Cemetery.
