LUCIUS S. THORPE , one of the old residents of Carroll county, died at his home in Elkhorn Grove Monday morning [4-24-1905]. Mr. Thorp fell down a stairway some time ago and has been ailing more or less ever since. He came to this county in an early day and was one of the first settlers. Mr. Thorp is probably as well known as any of the old settlers ever were. He was elected county surveyor many years ago and has filled the position the greater part of his life as will be shown by his extensive work on the plat book and in the different records of Carroll county. Mr. Thorp took great pride in the work and was never satisfied unless everything was done properly and in accordance with his views. He spent much time and labor in getting up and working on a surveyor's plat book of Carroll county and he leaves as a living monument his labors as surveyor of Carroll county which are recorded in the Carroll county records. He took great pleasure and delight in the work and was re-elected to the office many times which he accepted not because it paid financially but because he liked the work and to busy himself in connection therewith. He was a man of good character and habits and his convictions of right and wrong were of the most rigid nature and he was just as free to speak in the defense of them. The funeral services will be held at the home tomorrow (Thursday) at two o'clock p.m. after which the remains will be buried at the Union church cemetery.

PHOEBE A. (BILES) THORPE , daughter of John and Sarah Biles, was born in Wyalusing township, Bradford county, Pa., Oct. 28, 1832, where she lived with her parents until June 18, 1854, when she was united in marriage to the late Lucius S. Thorpe. Since her marriage she had resided at the old homestead in Elkhorn Grove township, Carroll county, Illinois. April 24, 1905, Mr. Thorpe passed away. Since that time Mrs. Thorpe had remained at the home place and there she passed away Oct. 28, 1905, the anniversary of her 73rd birthday. About 8 years ago she contracted bronchial difficulties that gradually terminated in lung affection. This she patiently endured. The end came quietly and peacefully. She leaves three children, Mrs. Eva T. Rogers of Mt. Carroll, Ill., Charles Spurgeon Thorpe and Mrs. D. Edgar Hall, both of Hitt, Ill., all of whom were with her at her demise. She also leaves one sister, Mrs. C.H. Keeler of Dixon, Ill., and three brothers, William, John and Chas. Biles of Towanda, Pa. The funeral was held at her late residence in Hitt, her former pastor, Rev. E. W. Annable, of Mendota, Ill., conducting the services. She was laid to rest by the side of her husband in Union cemetery.

Sarah Francis Carrico was born in Farguar County, Virginia, in 1839. Her parents were John and Nancy Carrico, she being one of eleven children, all of whom have passed away. She was the last to answer the call of the Master to come home. When she was twelve years old she moved with her parents to Licking County, Ohio, where in 1866 she was married to George W. Tilton, who preceded her in death June 13, 1927. To this union was born one daughter, Mrs. May Hause, who is left to mourn the passing of a faithful, loving Christian mother. She is also mourned by relatives, neighbors and friends, by whom she will be greatly missed. None knew her but to love her. All will miss her wise counsel, glad handclasp, and winning smile. She was an earnest Christian and a patient sufferer for over 16 years and was never heard to complain. Saying, only a few days before she passed to her reward, "I am ready. I am not afraid." "Blessed are they that die in the Lord, for they rest from their labors, and their works do follow them." Mother was 90 years, 10 months, and one day old when she died. And some day I want to meet her in Heaven.—Her daughter May.
