DOROTHY (KLOEPPING) VALKEMA , 95, of Freeport died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, at Parkview Home. Born Sept. 22, 1908, in Lanark, she was the daughter of William and Catherine (Orth) Kloepping. On March 14, 1929, Dorothy married Harold Valkema in Chicago. Mr. Valkema preceded her in death in April 1983. Dorothy was a member of St. John United Church of Christ, the Women's fellowship and EES Circle. She also was a member of Scottish Rite Women's Club. Dorothy enjoyed spending time with her family, playing cards, and she was always known for her wonderful smile. Surviving are two sons, Quentin E. (JoAnne) and Donald F. (Norma) Valkema, both of Freeport; one daughter, Carol (Stanley E.) Smith of Freeport; one brother, Lloyd (Marilynn) Kloepping of Lanark; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Her parents; husband; two brothers; five sisters; one great-grandson; and her daughter in-law, Ann Valkema, preceded her in death. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John United Church of Christ with the Rev. Donnley Dutcher officiating. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. GEORGE VAN BUSKIRK , of Mount Carroll, a retired farmer, died Thursday in Good Samaritan Center here. He was born May 1, 1890 in Carroll County, son of Henry and Josephine Van Buakirk. On August 12, 1912 he married Lula Belle Warfield in Carroll County. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Rolland (Bertha) Bowers of Milledgeville and Mrs. Margaret Rentz of Clinton, Iowa; three sons, Glen of Dixon, Lawrence of Rockford, and Robert of Savanna; 25 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Mrs. Lucy Poffenberger and Mrs. Josephine Coady, both of Mount Carroll, and Mrs. Mary Olson of Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his wife, three sosn, and three brothers. Funeral service will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Frank Funeral Home, Mount Carroll. The Rev. Fred Landolt, pastor of the Church of God here, will officiate. Burial will be in Hickory Grove Cemetery at Wacker. Friends may call after 8 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

VELMA A. (SACK) VAN BURSKIRK , 91, of Lanark, who had been a resident of the Good Samaritan Nursing Center in Mount Carroll for the past several months, died Saturday 8, 2000 at Freeport Memorial Hospital . Born April 18, 1908 in Argo Fay, she was the daughter of Charles and Mary (Bast) Sack. She and Clarence VanBuskirk were married in 1935 in Argo Fay at the home of the bride’s parents. He died in 1958. A graduate of Thomson High School , she attended Western Illinois Teachers College at Macomb . She taught school in rural Carroll County schools and then taught at Mount Carroll , Chadwick, and Lanark grade schools until retiring. She also taught violin, piano, and voice. She was a longtime member of the Lanark United Methodist church and was a past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star. Her memberships included the Retired Teachers Association, Carroll County Republican Women, Lanark United Methodist Women, Carroll County Home Extension Unit, and Carroll County Farm Bureau. She enjoyed music, loved to entertain and play cards. She also loved to travel and spend time with her family and friends. Surviving are one son, Clark E. (Janice) VanBuskirk of Mount Carroll; one daughter, Joan V. Johnson of Golden, Colorado ; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Vivian Behr, and one brother, Van Sack. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, January 14, at the Lanark United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rod Dye officiating. Burial will be in the Lanark Cemetery .

EMMA EATON VANDERHEYDEN , 72, died at 7:20 a.m. Friday in the home of a daughter, Mrs. Charles Merboth, northeast of Mount Carroll. Because of snow-blocked roads it was necessary to bring the body in a bobsled to the Christian funeral home here. Emma Eaton Vanderheyden was born June 7, 1867 in Elmoville, the daughter of Amos and Susan (Bruce) Eaton. She is survived by the daughter, Mrs. Merboth; a son, Frank in Madison, Wis., and two sisters, Mrs. James Blair of Morrison and Mrs. Davis Crouse of Savanna. The funeral probably will be held Sunday afternoon, either from the Christian funeral home or the Methodist church. Interment will be made in the mausoleum at Oak Hill Cemetery.

WILLIAM VAN DeVELDE , age 75, of Chadwick, Illinois, died Tuesday, May 2, 2006 at FHN Freeport Memorial Hospital, Freeport, Illinois. A Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 6, 2006 at SS. John & Catherine Catholic Church, Mt. Carroll, Illinois with Father Moises Apostol as Celebrant. Interment will take place in the Chadwick Cemetery with Full Military Rites, Chadwick, Illinois. A Scripture Wake Service will be held at 4:45 p.m. Friday, May 5, 2006 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll, with a visitation to be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Funeral Home. William was born September 8, 1930, the son of William and Ida (Van Acker) Van De Velde, in Fairfield Township, Illinois. On December 9, 1950, William married Marilyn Hadley in Sheffield, Illinois. In 1954, he entered the United States Air Force serving four years. William worked in the Pentagon in Washington D.C. for four years. Upon returning to the family farm in the Bureau County area, William and his family farmed and worked in Feed and Grain sales. In 1969, William, Marilyn and their family moved to Chadwick. He worked for Standard Oil, then owned and operated Bill’s Oil & Ag Company in Chadwick for twenty-one years. He was a Chadwick Volunteer Fireman for seventeen years. William was a member of SS. John & Catherine Catholic Church, Mt. Carroll, the Knights of Columbus, the Chadwick Lions Club for over thirty-four years, and a past Chadwick School Board President for nine years. William enjoyed working, traveling, going out to eat, but most of all he loved and enjoyed spending time with his family. William will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Marilyn of Chadwick; his daughter, Lisa (Thomas) Grentz of Loves Park, Illinois; a daughter in-law, Jennifer Van De Velde and two grandsons, Justin and Philip, all of Papillion, Nebraska; two sisters, Doretha (“Bus” Glen) Russell of Park Forest, Illinois and Nancy Gentry of Clearwater, Florida; many nieces, nephews and cousins. William is preceded in death by his parents; and one son Vincent H. Van De Velde in 1998.

JENNIE (HUIZENGA) VAN KAMPEN , 75, died Tuesday at the Good Samaritan Nursing home, Mt. Carroll. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 1:30 p.m in the Frank Funeral home. Burial in the Chadwick Cemetery with the Rev. Robert Porterfield, Community Church, Chadwick, officiating. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m on Thursday at the funeral home. Jennie Van Kampen was born in Whiteside County on March 8, 1908, the daughter of John Houzenga and Dora Huizenga. On Nov. 14, 1921 she married John Van Kampen in Fulton. Surviving are two sons, Harold and Robert, both of Chadwick; four daughters, Mrs. Francis (Della Mae) Hussung, Sterling, Mrs. James (Helen) Kall, Minneapolis, Minn., Mrs. Don (Betty) Schroeder, Byron, Mrs. Donald (Darlene) Olson, Lanark; nine grandchildren; two great grandchildren; one brother, David, Houzenga, Fulton; and one sister, Mrs. John (Helen) Mendorph, Fulton. Preceding her in death were her husband, seven brothers, two sisters, and three grandchildren.

JOHN VAN KAMPEN , 80, died Wednesday evening (9 Jun 1982) in the Savanna City Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Frank funeral Home in Chadwick with the Rev. Robert Porterfield of the Chadwick Community Church officiating. Burial will be in the Chadwick Cemetery. Visitation is from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Mr. Van Kampen was born Jan. 5, 1902 in Whiteside County, the son of Henry and Jennie (Kouzenga) Van Kampen. He was united in marriage to Jennie Houzenga on Nov 17, 1925 in Morrison. He was a retired farmer. He is survived by his wife, Jennie; two sons, Harold and Robert, both of Chadwick; four daughters, Mrs. Francis (Della Mae) Hussong, Sterling, Mrs. James (Helen) Kall, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Mrs. Don (Betty) Schroder, Byron and Mrs. Don (Darlene) Olson, Lanark; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. NANCY VAN DUSEN , at Milledgeville, Ill., May 12th, 1891, of erysipelas. The deceased was born in Franklin Co., Ohio, May 9th, 1833, and was married in Jackson County,Iowa, December 15, 1849. There are eight children now living who mourn her loss, besides large numbers of friends.

BRANFORD VAN VLECK , of Eldora, Iowa, died last Wednesday, September 19, 1906. many citizens of this place will remember Mr. Van Vleck as he was a resident of Milledgeville a number of years ago, being a contractor by trade. He built and lived in the house owned by Dr. Robert McPherson. He visited here about a year ago.

THOMAS A. VEITH , age 95, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois, died Saturday, January 10, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Society in Mt. Carroll. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 13, 2009, at the First Baptist Church in Mt. Carroll, with Rev. Bob Ziebarth and Rev. Jim Green officiating. A private family inurnment will take place at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Mt. Carroll. Memorials may be directed to the Good Samaritan Society, Mt. Carroll, or to the First Baptist Church, Mt. Carroll. Tom was born April 27, 1913, in Mt. Sterling, Illinois, the son of William B. and Effie P. (Clark) Veith. He graduated from Mt. Sterling High School in 1931. Tom was married Marjorie A. Tink, who preceded him in death in December of 1963. He later married Mary “Lolly” Wachtel DuBree on August 21, 1965. During the 1930’s, Tom worked at the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Savanna Army Depot, before enlisting in the United States Army at age 29. Tom served his country in Europe under General George S. Patton during World War II. Upon returning home, he resumed work at the Savanna Army Depot, and later purchased the grocery store in Mt. Carroll. In 1959, he opened Veith Memorials in Mt. Carroll, and in 1968 he went to work for the Mt. Carroll Mutual Fire Insurance Company before retiring in 1970. Tom enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, and any sort of outdoor work, especially taking care of his lawn. Tom and Lolly spent their winters in Florida. Tom also liked to go camping in their motor home. Tom is survived by his wife Mary “Lolly” Veith of Mt. Carroll, Illinois; one son, Richard (Nancy) Veith of Mt. Carroll; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth (Clark) Baker of Zion, Illinois; two step – sons, Thomas (Carol) DuBree of Connecticut, and Douglas J. (Cindy) DuBree of Rock Island, Illinois; two step – daughters, Pru Haney of Davenport, Iowa, and Pamela Miller of Mt. Carroll; ten grandchildren, and numerous great – grandchildren. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Marjorie; one sister, Mary Margaret Adams; and one brother, Glen Veith.

JENNIE G. (REED) VESELY , age 97, of Savanna, Illinois, died Saturday, September 16, 2006 at the Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna, Illinois. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 22, 2006 at the Savanna Bible Church, Savanna, Illinois. Burial will be in Savanna Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. prior to the funeral service at the church on Friday, September 22, 2006. She married Raymond Vesely on January 21, 1929 in Winona, Minnesota. Raymond passed away on February 27, 1970. Jennie was a supervisor at the Savanna Garment Company in Savanna, Illinois and was also employed as an assembler at the Eaton Corporation in Hanover, Illinois. She enjoyed sewing, flower gardening and was also an excellent cook. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Jennie is survived by one daughter, Esther Goss of Savanna, Illinois and one daughter in-law Ada Vesely of Savanna, Illinois; she will also be missed my many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Jennie is preceded in death by her husband, Raymond; two sons, Gene and Donald Vesely; one grand daughter Susan Vesely; one great grandson, Samuel Olson; and three sisters, Viola Lechler, Lorraine Demeester and Margaret Reed.

DOUGLAS VESPERMAN - A 13-year-old Savanna boy died Wednesday [4-1-1970] from injuries sustained when the bicycle he was riding was struck by a car north of Savanna. Douglas Vesperman, son Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Vesperman, died in Jane Lamb Hospital, Clinton, Iowa, shortly after 6 p.m. The accident occurred while it was snowing Wednesday. It was reported that the boy's bicycle swerved into the path of a car on Illinois 84 three miles north of Savanna. He was one of three boys riding their bicycles along the highway. The car was driven by Lawrence Noland, 23, of rural Savanna. Douglas, an eighth grader at Lincoln Junior High School, was born June 1, 1956, in Savanna, son of Kenneth and Jeanese (Wallace) Vesperman. Surviving are his parents; seven brothers and sisters; and his grandparents, Mrs. Isabelle Janzen and William Wallace, both of Savanna. He was preceded in death by a sister. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Community United Church of Christ here. Burial will be in Savanna Township Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Law-Jones Funeral Home.

BLANCHE (SMITH) DOUGLAS VICARS , 97, of Savanna, died Wednesday at Mercy North Hospital, Clinton. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, Savanna. The Rev. Thomas Moe and the Rev. Lisa Mapes the of First United Methodist Church in Savanna will be officiating. Burial will be in the Savanna Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. The Law-Jones Funeral Home, 309 Chicago Ave., is in charge of arrangements. She was born July 11, 1906, in Savanna to Bernie and Neva Force Smith. She married Harold "Ted" Douglas on Dec. 25, 1925. He died in 1961. She then married Max C. Vicars on April 28, 1964. He died in 1970. For many years she worked with Bogues Shoe Store in Savanna. She also worked with Marths Variety and the Ben Franklin Store. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Savanna. Survivors include three daughters, Renee Bogue of Savanna, Mrs. Sally (Richard) Salazar of La Mesa, Calif., and Mrs. Dena (Walt) Miller of Savanna; seven grandchildren; and eight great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, one son, two sisters and one brother. A memorial fund has been established in her name.

DOROTHY VIELE , 91, of Winter Haven, died of respiratory failure on Jan. 15, 2005 in Winter Haven. She was a native of Savanna, Ill., who moved to the area five years ago from Miami Beach. She was a beautician and a member of Grace Lutheran Church. She is survived by her brother, Glen C. Doty of Winter Haven and her sister, Ruby Doden of Morrison, Ill. MARVIN VIETMEYER , 66, of Mount Carroll, formerly of Lanark, died Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, at Good Samaritan Nursing Center. He was born Dec. 20, 1933, in Forreston to Oliver and Eldora (Janssen) Vietmeyer, and graduated from Lanark High School. On Oct. 13, 1989, he and Jackie York were married in Mount Carroll. After his retirement from Micro Switch, he worked for the Mount Carroll School District and was a Pinkerton guard at Metform in Savanna. A veteran, he served during the Korean Conflict. He was a former member of First Brethren Church in Lanark and a lifetime member of Polo Veterans of Foreign Wars. For 20 years he worked with Boy Scout Troop 61 in Lanark. Surviving are his wife; three sons, Craig (Sherrie) Vietmeyer of Mount Carroll and Kevin and Curt Vietmeyer of Lanark; five grandchildren, Chris and Courtney Vietmeyer of Mount Carroll, Scott, Candice and Stephanie Vietmeyer of Lanark; five stepchildren, Debra Pyron of Rockford, James (Roseann) Donegan of Mount Morris, Patrick Donegan of Los Angeles, Micheal (Jodi) York of Lanark and Kendra York of Mount Carroll; four step-grandchildren, Jamie and Jason Donegan of Mount Morris and Justin and Jerrid Pyron of Rockford; and two sisters, Barbara (Ronald) Gerdes of Tucson, Ariz., and Diane (Marvin Sr.) Hans of Freeport. Preceding him in death were his parents, one sister, one grandchild and one nephew. The funeral and burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Chapel Hill Memorial gardens in Freeport with the Rev. RAYMOND L. VOLKERS , 94, of Lanark, a retired farmer, died Wednesday October 14, 1998 at Freeport Memorial Hospital . A son of James and Alma (Christman) Volkers, he was born September 4, 1904 at Pearl City . He was a graduate of Shannon High School . On October 8, 1940, he and Helen Gerdes were married at Milledgeville. She died in 1994. After retiring from farming, he worked for Lanark School District . His memberships included Trinity Lutheran Church in Lanark and Carroll County Farm Bureau. Surviving are one daughter, Marian (Ivan) Haijenga of Forreston; and two grandchildren, Rita Haijenga of Henry and Richard (June) Haijenga of Forreston. Preceding him in death in addition to his wife were his parents; two sisters, Genevieve Gast and Gwendolyn Shafer; and two brothers, Randall and Forrest Volkers. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Russell-Frank Funeral Home in Lanark, and burial will be at Lanark Cemetery . The Rev. Kim Lee-Brown of Trinity Lutheran Church will officiate.

MRS. W.J. VOLLMER , a former resident of Milledgeville passed away at her home in Chicago Friday afternoon, July 16. While Mrs. Vollmer had not been in the best of health for a number of years her condition did not become critical until the Sunday previous to her death. At this time her son Walter and his wife of this place were summoned in her bedside and remained until the end came. The deceased until the end came. The deceased was 47 years of age and leaves to mourn besides her husband one son, Walter Vollmer of Milledgeville and one daughter, Florence, who resides in the home; two brothers and two sisters and one granddaughter, little Hazel Vollmer. Mrs. Vollmer was a woman of a kind and sociable disposition and made many friends. In the home she was a faithful wife and loving mother. On leaving Milledgeville Mr. and Mrs. Vollmer went to Stillman Valley where they resided until within the past year they again moved to Chicago which had been their home previous to coming here about nine years ago. The last sad rites were conducted from her late home on Sunday afternoon. Rev. C. A. Gage a former pastor of the MIlledgeville M. E. church, but now of Chicago officiated. The burial was made in Graceland cemetery. Mrs. O. A. Manning, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Vollmer and daughter Hazel returned from Chicago Sunday evening where they had been called on account of the sickness and death of Mrs. Vollmer. Mr. Vollmer and daughter Florence accompanied them to Milledgeville where they will remain until the first of August.

HERMAN VOLZ , Relatives in Chadwick received the news that Herman Volz, Sr. 68, of Aurora, Mo., passed away Saturday afternoon, March 4, of a heart ailment. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in the Presbyterian Church in Aurora, Mo., with the Rev. Milton Kline officiating. Burial will be in Edmond, Okla. Herman Volz, Sr., son of Mr. and Mrs. John Volz, was born Sept. 23, 1884 in Fairhaven Township. On Dec. 16, 1913, he was married to Margaret Caymer at Edmond, Okla. Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Gwendolyn Johnson of Mariah, Kan.; one son, Herman, Jr., of Oakland, Calif.; four sisters, Mrs. John Atkins of Savanna, Mrs. Mary Friederich, Mrs. William Eickert and Miss Johanna Volz, all of Chadwick; four brothers, Fred Volz, of Lanark; John of Blue Earth, Minn.; Lewis and Henry of Polo, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

GLADYS (BROWN) VOSS , age 96, of Savanna, Illinois, died Thursday, September 7, 2006 at the Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna, Illinois. A Funeral will be held 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 12, 2006, at the Community United Church of Christ, Savanna with Reverend Robert Hamilton officiating. Burial will take place in Savanna Township Cemetery, Savanna. Friends may call from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 12, 2006 at the Community United Church of Christ, one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to the Community United Church of Christ Organ Fund. Gladys was born October 18, 1909, Savanna Township, the daughter of Frank E. and Lydia Mae (Leavens) Brown. She attended the Timbuktu Country School and graduated from Savanna High School. Gladys married Herbert Almquist in 1927, Herbert passed away in 1950. Gladys married Earl Voss in 1954, Earl passed away in 1991. Gladys worked as a Bookkeeper for Savanna Hospital, Carroll County Courthouse and Eaton Corporation. Gladys loved spending time with her family. She was a member of the Community United Church of Christ, the Lend a Hand Unit at the Community United Church of Christ, Eastern Star, Watanye Club, and Women of the Moose. Gladys also enjoyed playing bridge with many groups. Gladys will be deeply missed by her daughter, Lydia (Tom) Root of Savanna; eight grandchildren; Joel, Jim, John and Jeff Root, Larry Almquist, Linda Edwards, Lori Miller and Scott Almquist; three step grandchildren, Richard, Scott and Jody Eads; one brother Kyle (Ruth) Brown of Savanna. Gladys was preceded in death by two husbands; one son Lawrence Allan Almqusit, three brothers, a sister and a stepdaughter.
