MARGRETHA (DETRICH) ZIER , nee Detrich, was born in Wertenburg, Germany, January 7, 1837 and departed this life at her home in Cherry Grove Township, Carroll county, Illinois, February 27, 1922, aged 85 years, 1 month and 20 days. She and her brother, Tobias came to America in 1852. On December 2, 1857, she was united in marriage to John Zier. To this union were born three children, Emanuel L., Lenford T. and John G. all residing in Cherry Grove. There are also six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Her husband, a native of Darmstadt, Germany, departed this life on September 23, 1911. Uncle John and Auntie Zier, as they were familiarly known, spent most of their life in Cherry Grove and gathered about them a host of friends. She united with the Church of the Brethren in October, 1875 and lived faithful to her Saviour and the church of her choice until she was called from the church, militant to the church triumphant. She has not enjoyed good health for the last ten years or more and many times expressed her desire to go home and be relieved of her sufferings, but she bore it all patiently until the end came. In the death of Auntie Zier, the children lose a fine type of Christian mother, the church a faithful, loyal member and the community a great friend. Thus ends the earthly life of a good woman. Funeral services were held at the Cherry Grove church on Thursday forenoon, February 2, conducted by Elders I.R. Young and I. E. Weaver and Rev. J. G. Finkbeiner of Shannon. of Shannon. Her body was laid to rest in the cemetery near by.

MARTHA ZOOK , a young lady who had been staying at the Orphan's Home in Fair Haven, died Sunday of diphtheria. Miss Donaldson, who taught the district school near there, and who kindly volunteered to nurse the patients at the Home is very ill with the disease now, and her death may result. Miss Zook was eighteen years of age and was a cousin of the superintendent of the Home. About a week ago Dr. Snow, of Chadwick, drove to the home to see if the patients had recovered so far that the quarantine might be taken off. He found things in a deplorable condition as far as health is concerned, but still he says they had an idea in their heads that they had no use for earthly doctors. He became disgusted with them and left them. This young lady makes the fourth victim for the disease at this home within a month. It is not known the number that are sick yet, but it is supposed to be quite large.

GEORGE ZUGSCHWERDT - The body of the late George Zugschwerdt of Kansas City arrived in Chadwick this morning at 6 o’clock with an escort of brother Knights Templar from the Kansas City lodge, and five brother engineers. The time for the funeral has not yet been set, but it will be held either Saturday [02/01/1913] or Sunday. The facts as to how Mr. Zugschwerdt met his death are as follows: He was the engineer of a trailing engine, and shortly after crossing a high bridge, the fireman noticed that he was missing. He signaled the engine ahead to stop, but could not make it do so, and then pulled the air brake, which stopped the engine. They went back to the bridge and found the body of Zugschwerdt hanging from the trestle work. The supposition is that while crossing the bridge he put his head out of the cab window, and it was caught by the trestle work of the bridge, and his body dragged out of his cab. He was dead when the train crew reached him.
