Spencer-Benham Family Reunions

1974 Spencer-Benham Reunion
Contributed and transcribed by Judy Witt

The 104th annual Spencer-Benham Reunion was held on June 9 at the Riverdale School near Rock Falls. Due to uncertain weather, excessive rain prior to the reunion, and incomplete facilities, the reunion was not held at Nims Park as scheduled. A big round of thanks was given to Paul Spencer & Lowell Spencer for procuring Riverdale School’s gymnasium and facilities for our use. Approximately 100 friends and relatives gathered and enjoyed a delicious potluck dinner.

The business meeting was called to order by President, Ralph Witt, who also led the singing of “God Bless American.” Secretary Judy Witt read the minutes of the 1973 reunion and the treasurer’s report. In the absence of our historian, the secretary also read the lists of births. No deaths were reported.

The seventy-two-year-old tradition of the silver spoon was continued as the oldest member present, Mrs. Alta Druce of Lyndon, Ill., presented the silver spoon to 12-day-old Robert Eugene Morse. Robert is the son of Robert and Denise Morse, grandson of Mr. & Mrs. Bob Whittington, and great-grandson of Mr. & Mrs. Floyd Spencer of Rock Falls. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Ruby had traveled the farthest—coming from Oshkosh, Wisconsin. A family newsletter was discussed and voted on and approved. Members are requested to send information for such a newsletter to the members.

The officers for next year are: President: Ralph Witt; Vice President: Ronald Spencer; Secretary-Treasurer: Judy Witt. The business meeting was then adjourned. The 1975 reunion will be held on June 8 at Riverdale School.

Activities following the meeting included: identifying “old” reunion pictures and collecting items to be added to the scrapbook. Games, contests, and music provided by family members rounded out an enjoyable afternoon.
