The 106th annual (79th consecutive) Spencer-Benham Reunion was held Sunday, June 13, at the Riverdale School in Rock Falls, Illinois. Ralph Witt of Elmhurst led the 108 registered people in singing “God Bless America” and the Pledge of Allegiance.” All enjoyed a delicious potluck dinner.
The business meeting was called to order by Ralph Witt. The old record book was on display, which provided interesting reading for many. The officers will make a copy of the old record book and then it was voted to place it in a safety deposit box in order to assure its safety. The most cherished member (eldest) present was Mrs. Alta Druce of Sterling. She presented the reunion spoon to Dami Talene Randecker, daughter of Fred and Sherri Randecker, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold “Teen” Spencer, and great granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Spencer. The Ruby’s of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, were honored as the family traveling the farthest. Mr. Robert Ripley, his sister—Mrs. Anderson, and her husband all of Rockford were in attendance for the first time since the 1930’s. It was decided to hold the 1977 reunion at Riverdale School again.
The reunion association members reelected the same officers for 1977: Ralph Witt, Elmhurst, Ill., President; Judy Witt, Secretary—treasurer; Ron Spencer, Tampico, Vice President.
A bicentennial project was to have each family prepare a family quilt block for a family quilt. It will be displayed at the 1977 reunion.
Games were held for children and adults, including bingo and the annual softball game. The afternoon was ended with ice cream for all.
