To The
Spencer-Benham Family Reunions

1977 Spencer-Benham Reunion
Contributed and transcribed by Judy Witt

More than 80 descendants of Naaman and Diantha (Benham) Spencer gathered at Nims Park in Rock Falls on Sunday, June 12, for the 80th consecutive reunion. President Ralph Witt called the gathering to order and led the Pledge to the flag and the traditional singing of God Bless America. After a short prayer, the hungry relatives and friends sat down to a delicious pot luck dinner.

The business meeting was called to order and it was announced that a copy of the old record book was on display at the reunion. This book details much of the family history since 1837 as well as records of each reunion held since 1897.

Mrs. Grace Peterson of Racine, Wisconsin, was awarded a gift as being the family member who traveled the farthest. Mrs. Alta Druce was the eldest member present and she presented the traditional spoon to the youngest member present, Michael Haff. Michael was born on April 7, 1977 and is the son of Michael and Rita aff of Geneseo, grandson of Loris and Robert Whittington of Erie, and great Haff of Geneseo, grandson of Loris and Robert Whittington of Erie, and great grandson of Floyd and Myrtle Spencer of Rock Falls.

It was announced that the family quilt will be made into two quilts due to the great response. The quilt will be displayed in 1978.

The officers elected for 1978 are Ralph Witt, President, Ronald Spencer, Vice President, and Judy Witt, Secretary-Treasurer. The 1978 reunion will be held on June 11th at Nims Park in Rock Falls.

The traditional softball game, as well as Frisbee toss, children’s games, scavenger hunt, and bingo provided enjoyment for all. John Artz provided excellent guitar music as the many friends and relatives visited. The afternoon was concluded with the serving of ice cream.
