Spencer-Benham Family Reunions

1978 Spencer-Benham Reunion
Contributed and transcribed by Judy Witt

On June 11, 1978, the 81st consecutive Spencer-Benham Reunion was attended by 116 family members at Nims Park in Rock Falls, Illinois. A delicious pot luck dinner was enjoyed by all on a warm, but windy, Sunday afternoon. The families traveling farthest to attend the reunion were Mr. and Mrs. Bob McCoy and their daughters’ families—Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Albin and Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Lynn, all of Pleasant Hill, Missouri. Mrs. McCoy is the daughter of Myrtle Spencer of Rock Falls. Each family was presented with a copy of the updated family history. The most cherished (eldest) member present was Alta Druce of Sterling (aged 77 years). Alta presented the traditional souvenir spoon to the youngest member present—Corbie Jean Smith, born March 20, 1978, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rick Smith of Walnut, Illinois, and granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Scykes of Tampico, Illinois.

President Ralph Witt announced that the family history booklet has been updated and contains short biographies of Naaman, Diantha, and each of their children. This is available from Ralph Witt for $2 per copy. Also available is a photocopy of the Old Record Book. The family quilt was displayed. This quilt contains blocks made by each family and the reunion association thanks Mrs. Myrtle Spencer for her beautiful work in putting it together. It was also moved and so voted that a sign saying Spencer-Benham Reunion should be made to be used at each reunion. Anyone interested in obtaining the family history booklet, a copy of the Old Record, or making quilt blocks for their family should contact Ralph Witt or Ronald Spencer.

After the business meeting was adjourned, the traditional softball game was held. There were also games, races, Frisbee throwing, and a scavenger hunt as well as bingo.

The officers for 1979 are: Ralph Witt, President, Ron Spencer, Vice President, Judy Witt, Secretary-Treasurer. The 1979 reunion will be held at Nims Park again.

The afternoon was ended by serving ice cream to all
