Spencer-Benham Family Reunions

1983 Spencer-Benham Reunion
Contributed and transcribed by Judy Witt

On Sunday, June 19, 1983, about 74 family and friends met at Montmorency School for the 86th Spencer-Benham Reunion. Vada Waites, president, called the meeting to order and led the pledge of Allegiance. The singing of God Bless America was followed by a prayer. Vada dressed up for the festive occasion. Then we all enjoyed a pot luck dinner.

At the meeting, Bonnie Ayala, acting Secretary, read the minutes of the last meeting and correspondence letters that were received. Betty Scykes presented a Father’s Day poem, which was read to all.

Myrtle (Spencer) Spencer was the most cherished (oldest) member present. She presented a spoon to the youngest member present Brian Lee Scykes, son of Brian Edward and Cheryl (Michels) Scykes. Brian Lee was born on February 1, 1982. He’s the grandson of Betty (Spencer) and Edward Scykes of Sterling.

Doris and Frank Matuska and family were the ones traveling the farthest from Blacksburg, South Carolina. The most generations present were 4 with Myrtle Spencer, Paul Spencer, Ronald Spencer, and Angela Kaye and Bradley Spencer.

There was no old business. New business concerns were when and where the reunion will be held. The decision was mad for June 10th at the same place. Ronnie Spencer volunteered to check on the price for the school. Election of officers was: Vada Waites President, Betty Scykes Vice President, Bonnie Ayala Secretary-Treasurer. All were approved and seconded. Meeting was closed.

Musical instruments were brought and played by the family and friends and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. A balloon-popping game was brought to help raise money, along with a bean guessing game. There was the traditional baseball game and a badminton game enjoyed by several family members. There was a water balloon toss and relay races for the younger members. Plus the traditional scavenger hunt.

Raffles were taken for a macramé hanger and an afghan, which was donated by Judy and Kim Spencer. $38 was raised from the raffle. Fun and fellowship were enjoyed by all. The afternoon was rounded off with music and ice cream for all to enjoy.

Submitted by Bonnie Ayala Secretary-Treasuer.
