Carter,  Mumford

Posted July 10, 2005

I am responding for a friend of mine who does not have access to the internet. She descends from Tina Carter daughter of Britton Carter and Elizabeth Mumford who lived Menard County, IL - later moved to Cass County, IL. Together this couple had: Robert, Sarah, Nancy and Tina, who sometimes has been recorded as Teny, or even Jenny - when the "t" is mistaken as a "j".  She has a copy of Britton Carter’s marriage record to Elizabeth Mumford which took place in Menard County, IL.

Tina, as she calls her, was married several times and has been difficult to trace, but she does have copies of her 4 marriages and 2 divorces.  She was married three times in Mason County, IL and once in Menard County, IL.

When Tina was married to John Springer Davidson -- her first of four marriages -- she had 2 children that my friend knows of -- one of which was Emma Davidson was born -- who was my friend's grandmother. There is a large enough age difference between Walter older brother to Emma (although this name is spelled Waiter Davidson - who lived at time of death, "up by Peoria IL"). She states that other children could have been born, died, or given out.

According to St Hospital records, Britton died accidentally at age 42. This is according to records when her last husband, Pink, out Tina in the state hospital. Tina was not there very long and was discharged. Tina died in 1927 in Springfield, IL.

Additionally she states:

Britton was the son of Robert Carter and LeLander (sp?) Davis. She has no information on the Elizabeth Mumford (Britton’s wife) other than her name.

My friend states that there is another Britton Carter buried in Dick’s cemetery in Cass County, IL. However the dates on the stone are too old to be the same Britton that she is looking for.

One of Tina Carter's sister's - Nancy - married a Hines.

Tilden Hines was either Nancy's husband or son. It is thought that the drowned in the Sangamon River in IL. She states that she will have to get out all her paper, but thinks that this was her son.

If you have any information on Britton Carter, Elizabeth Mumford, Robert Carter (Sr. so as not to confuse this Carter with Britton's son named Robert), Lelander Davis, or for that matter any of Britton's children, including Tina

They lived in Cass County in 1880. Mary may have been known as Betty. They had 7 children in 1880--Emma, Harriet or Hattie, Frank, Miles, Virginia, Julia and Anna. I'm pretty sure they had a farm. Any information or a source of information would be appreciated. My name is Frankie-I live in Denver and these were my great great grandparents. My e-mail is fjer22@cs.com

Richard Davis died 27 jan 1892 and is buried in the Walnut Grove Cemetery, Cass Co., IL. Samuel H died 26 Apr 1835 and is buried in the Cauby Cemetery, Cass Co., IL.

Any information on these two couples or their children would be a great help.

Also any information on Barnabas A. Thompson and Samuel Berry Thompson especially. Samuel Berry Thompson was my great-grandfather. Barney , his brother; has remained illusive through all my research. I know he was born in 1844 and still lived with his father Richard Davis Thompson in 1870 (acc. census). However after that I fail to find any trace of him.

Thanks
