These men were sworn into office by Thomas Pogue, a Beardstown magistrate. On the 14th day of August, 1837, the county commissioners met and organized Cass County. At this first meeting of the board, the new county was divided into six precincts, which were named: Beardstown, Monroe, Virginia, Sugar Grove, Richmond and Bowens.
