Whirlwind.—On the 13th, a whirlwind passed over portions of the State of New York, causing much devastation and some loss of life, in the vicinity of Utica and Oswego. On the same day, a tornado swept over portions of Christian county, Illinois, carrying death and destruction in its course. Many buildings were destroyed ; a woman and four children were killed, and several persons seriously injured. [Source: "The Friend", 1857 - submitted by K. Torp]



While climbing over a fence 3 miles east of Pana, Ill, George Gaillard, aged 16, son of George Gaillard, accidentally discharged his shotgun and blew off the right side of his head.-

Pana - Robert McCullough, Jr., aged about 22, member of a well known family of Morrisonville, was found dead and mangled on the tracks of the Wabash railroad two miles south of Farmersville. He is thought to have been struck by a fast passenger. -

Pana - August Ward, 45, of St. Louis, was killed in a fall from the tipple to make repairs. He lost his balance and fell 25 feet. He walked about for a few minutes, then collapsed. He died soon afterwards. The body was shipped to St. Louis.

A Car Turned Over On Route 16 South of This City
Taylorville Folks Meet With Accident Enroute Home
Frank Kosetz aged 18 of Taylorville is in St Francis hospital suffering from a fractured right arm and a badly injured knee the results of an accident on Route 16 south of this city at midnight. Mr Kosetz and his sister Rose, a nurse at St Vincents hospital, Martin Gall and Miss "Tubbie" Karnes all of Taylorville were returning from St Louis where they took another sister of the Kosetzs who is a student in the school in St Louis. Miss Rose was driving a Cadillas car owned by Earl Thompson a garage man of Taylorville. She was driving at a good speed when another car going south blinded her and she ran off the road and the car rolled over and over into a ditch. All of the occupants of the car were thrown out. Frank was the only one injured. Lewis Yeager happened to be passing and brot (as spelled) the injured boy to the hospital. The other three went on to Taylorville. The car was badly damaged. It was pulled to Taylorville by the owner who came for it early this morning.

Twelve Hurt at Carlinville
Representative T. A. Snell of Carlinville was painfully injured Saturday evening when the grandstand at the Macoupin County Fair Grounds fell during a field meet. Al Westermeier was also injured. Twelve were injured but none seriously.
