This is the annual delinquent tax list, printed in the Republican. These are just the folks who didn't pay their taxes on time.... not all the folks who owned land. So if you don't find your folks on here, they either didn't own land in Coles, or more likely, they were good law-abiding citizens who paid the taxman on time! Names are spelled as in the original source, so be aware that there are misspellings.

NOTICE is hereby given, that application will be made to the Circuit Court of Coles County, at the next May term, thereof, for adjustment against the above described Lands and Town Lot for the Taxes remaining due and unpaid for the year 1843, and for an order to sell the said Lands and Town Lot, for the satisfaction of the said Circuit Court, all the Lands and Town Lot against which judgment shall be pronounced, and to the sale of which such order shall be made, will be exposed to public Sale at costs due thereon, for the year aforesaid.
